Saw this cute fungus on a walk to the nearby woods this morning. I didn’t see many birds but the bird app said there was a winter wren and a brown creeper along with the regulars. And above me in the highest branches I could see tiny birds moving around. The app said they were gold crowned kinglets. There was a truck beeping somewhere and someone was mowing the park on a riding mower but the woods seemed to muffle everything else and for a little while it was just me and those kinglets flitting among the changing leaves in the sun way far above me. For a few moments everything almost seemed okay.

Leptogium azureum
Blue jellyskin lichen
I love when lichens get names like L. azureum and blue jellyskin lichen and then you look at them and are like . . . yeah maybe I would say its blue I guess? Like clearly whoever name L. azureum had been looking at a lot of dull-colored lichens before this one to come up with that name. This gelatinous, foliose lichen has broad, irregular lobes growing in large patches up to 9 cm in diameter. The upper surface is bluish-gray when dry, and darker blue-green when moist. The lower surface is paler gray and wrinkled with white hairs. It produces red-brown apothecia which grow on very short stalks and have a thalline margin around the disk. It has a cyanobacterial photobiont. L. azureum grows on acrid rock and bark in tropical and subtropical regions around the globe.

#2247 - Porella sp. - Scalewort
The diversity of the epiphytes where-ever conditions were damp enough was amazing - I mean, there's at LEAST three other species in this photo alone. And I didn't get any usable photos of the others. *sigh*
Porella is a widespread genus of leafy liverwort, with between 84 to 150 species depending who you listen to. The genus are common epiphytes in temperate areas, and have lobed leaves with a large upper lobe and small lower lobe. Apparently it's important to check the underside of liverwort fronds for supplementary leaves.

Nephroma helveticum
Fringed kidney lichen
*realizing I don't know what "helvetica" means, quickly googles* huh. Alright. It means Swiss. I guess maybe this lichen was discovered in Switzerland? Or is widely distributed there? No? Ok, I got nothing. Carry on.

@sparkyopteryx and I went to another park on another day, where I noticed these fantastic lichen and moss formations. I had to stop and take pictures. A heart shaped moss? Super cute!
