Today is the anniversary of the first appearance - and thus, birthday - of a very obscure yet somewhat lovable Disney character: Billy Spook (aka Billy the Ghost), from the Nintendo GameCube game Disney's Party! Unfortunately, he's seldom been seen since, but maybe that could change one day. You never know. Anyways, Happy Birthday, Billy! Hopefully this Birthday won't be so lonely...

Also, a huge shout-out to Rick McKee, who was arranger/programmer for these songs (at least, the 2011 ones). Without these fantastic tunes, Cool the Heat simply wouldn’t be the same, so thanks a million, man!

From 2006 to 2011, Tokyo Disneyland held a special short live show that would cool guests off during the Tokyo summer heat. The show featured catchy songs, energetic dances, and plenty of H2O gushing from Cinderella Castle onto the audience. Its name was Cool the Heat (クール・ザ・ヒート). There were many different versions of Cool the Heat, each depending on what year it took place on and which character was being given the spotlight. As such, there are three yearly for the show - the original, which ran from 2006 to 2009; the second, which ran in 2010; and the final one, which ran in 2011 - as well as four categories for which character would appear - Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and one or two “other” characters, who differed depending on each year’s version.

Finale - “Let’s Get Wet!”
After the starring character’s individual song, every show ends with this song that unites the audience and gets them ready for a huge, show-stopping ending. Halfway through, Goofy comes back onto the scene (if he wasn’t present for the previous song), and all the characters and dancers put their all into one last splash! And let me just say, it’s extremely satisfying to hear everyone in the audience clap to the beat!
All in all, Cool the Heat was a fantastic series of shows, and I really wish they’d bring it back someday. The cast members really seemed to be having a blast performing, especially when they decided to go off-script and get a bit chaotic. (Goofy x Minnie, anyone?)

Goofy & Max 2011 “Pirates Splash”
After all this time of being seen only in the intro and ending, everybody’s favorite Goof finally gets a shot at the spotlight - and he’s brought his son Max along for the ride. In fact, this is the only show other than Mr. Incredible’s to feature two main characters. The song is reminiscent of A Goofy Movie’s “I2I”, and is generally my favorite “guest” song in Cool the Heat (mainly ‘cause the others aren’t that great, but hey).

Donald 2011 “Make a Splash”
My absolute number one favorite song in Cool the Heat is here! The fast-paced tempo! The energetic band! The “Splash!” all the characters say! And even Donald’s little salute at one point! It’s all enough to make me repeat the whole thing on loop and never stop! I watched this one with some friends, and they said Donald’s voice was “grating,” but I couldn’t agree less! Fun fact: many years later, this song’s instrumental would be reused for the stage show, “Jamboree Mickey: Let’s Dance!”, and I’d say that’s for good reason! There’s no stopping Captain Donald!

Minnie 2011 “Pirates of Love”
Get ready to set sail! The only treasure Captain Minnie’s got her eye on is romance! Not too much to say about this one. It’s just another catchy song starring Minnie. I think I like her 2010 one more, though.

Mickey 2011 “Aye Aye, Captain Mickey”
The 2011 versions of Cool the Heat are all pirate-themed, as part of “Pirates Summer” at Tokyo Disneyland! Instead of their plumber gear, the backup dancers are clad in rugged pirate clothes. Mickey gets an energetic, hopeful song about seeking treasure. Has a sort of disco-type sound to it. I like it.

Stitch 2008 - 2010 “Hawaiian Medley(?)”
Skipping over Donald’s, which we already went over, the lovable blue alien gets his turn to cause a water-based ruckus. Like Donald, Stitch is also voiced by Koichi Yamadera. Unfortunately, though, this song is my least favorite by a wide margin. The whole stop-and-go nature doesn’t really help it stick in my head. There is a unique ending - a calming rendition of  “Aloha 'Oe” - after the ending song, so that’s nice.

Minnie 2010 “Summer Idol(?)”
Better watch out! She’s comin’ your way, boys! Washed up in a tidal wave! Minnie glamorously steps out in a sparkly blue dress, accompanied by a techno pop number. It’s my favorite Minnie song by far - the water-themed lyrics and pop dance moves really fit Minnie’s whole “diva” aesthetic throughout CtH. Makes me think Minnie is secretly a mermaid, though…

Mickey 2010 “Make it Rain”
After running for four years, Cool the Heat was revamped in 2010. All of the main characters’ outfits share a theme (as far as I can tell) of  “blue”, the color of water. Otherwise, though, they’re still different genres. Mickey dons a cowboy getup and dances to an upbeat western song - even the backup dances are wearing ten-gallon hats instead of their usual caps! This is my favorite of Mickey’s songs in CtH - the high-energy beat keeps me jumping every time, especially when the act reaches its climax! Make it rain, Mickey! Also, the song would reappear at TDL’s New Years Countdown Party 2010 - 2011.
