Valentine’s Day Delivery

The distance usually posed logistical challenges for the couple, but when it came to the Day of Love ™️, Juniper knew better than to let it slip without acknowledgement. After all, Augustine was a romantic to his very core, and there was no doubt he would do something, distance be damned.

Weeks of thought and preparation went into her gift, as she carefully arranged and made each component of its creation. Once complete, she nodded to herself, smiling contentedly as she sealed it with a ribbon and a card.

“Astral, deliver this to Augustine for me, please. You know where to leave it, right?” The alien Pokémon nodded, taking the bod in his hands and teleporting to complete the task.

“Yem behee hey”. The alien nodded as he inspected the location, leaving the box carefully on the professor’s desk before leaving.

Upon opening the box, there would be a parchment paper covering the treat. Underneath is a series of airtight containers, each with the picture of a region on it. Once all were removed, a map could be seen, drawn into the bottom of the box. It can be removed, and opened up. In the center piece is an envelope with a heart seal. The map, fully open, is of the world. There are small heart pins in each country that matches each of the marked containers.

The note reads:

“Dearest Augustine,

Enclosed within each container is a single serving of a dish from the region featured on its lid. Some are meals, others are treats. Each region is marked on the map to show where it came from, and this is for a reason. When we started dating, you told me of your travels, your love of food, and we shared endless stories and dreams of where we both would love to see. Consider this the start of that dream!

I have hand made each of these treats, all from places we both have said we traveled to already. Let’s see how long it takes before we can place those heart pins in all of the countries?

I love you, Augustine, and I look forward to all of the memories and experiences we will share together from here on forward.

Though love may have been in the air, today was still just a Wednesday in the Sycamore Lab. 

There were two birthing appointments, a fang extraction, and a strange case of a scentless Spritzee. The day carried on, keeping both humans and Pokemon residents on their toes (or claws or paws), and it soon was well past lunch. Keeping an eye on things as usual, Rubis nudged Augustine away from a microscope, pushing his rolling chair away from the table. All he could do is laugh as his assistants watched him roll by. 

“I suppose Rubis and I are off to lunch!” he called over his shoulder. “Hold all of my calls!”  The little trip ended at the foot of the stairs, and Augustine rose from his chair to head towards his office. Once inside, Sycamore dropped the needle on his record player. He collapsed in his chair, and threw his feet on his desk. Once the first notes of Morning Mood began to play, he toed off his shoes, yawned, and considered taking a nap. 

Miles away, he had arranged for a package to be delivered to his...well.. To Professor Juniper.  Before he drifted off, he wondered if it got to her safely. She was not the sort to pay attention to things once she was busy with her work, and may have not even noticed it had gotten there.  Oh well. He heaved a big sigh, and settled deeper into his chair to drift off.  

A sudden disciplinary grunt from his dragon made him wince, and he grinned sheepishly.  “Ah, I know I must eat, Rubis, but I am exhausted. If the entire lab caught fire, I would sleep through it until the firefighters saved me!”  Before Rubis could utter another sound, he trudged to the small kitchen in his office to search for something. In the brief moment that he was away, there was a sudden shift in the air, then a flash of a strange Pokemon in the room. 

It happened far too fast for even the Mach dragon to react, and she stood, blinking at the spot where it vanished.  Her attention then went to the box, and she gave it a critical side-eye. It had a familiar scent mixed in with the various aromas of spices, sauces, and a few herbs. 

Like a beacon, the sudden scent of food lured Sycamore back to his office. It was far too strong to ignore, even with the large windows open. He sat at his desk, pulled the chair close, and curiously inspected the box.  A red ribbon, a card....all the markers of love! He looked up at the blue dragon and beamed happily.  “Rubis! How did---did you do this? This smells delicious!!” 

The Garchomp stared hard at him for a moment before urging him to open the box.  “Ah, yes! Right!”  He plucked the card off the box, and read the note. Inside his chest, his heart fluttered, and he felt his face grow warm. It was Aurea!!  And she made food!! At that, he pulled the ribbon off the box, and began unwrapping the many layers inside.  There was ramen, of course, and a bit of Jägerschnitzel....and was that half a Gyro? He excitedly piled containers of food onto his desk until he reached the bottom of the box. The map was set on an empty area of his desk, and he spent a moment to look over each marked area. Kalos and Unova held the most points, naturally, but Hoenn, Alola, and Tohjo had a few marks as well.  Between the two of them, they covered tons of ground. Together, they could cover lots more.  He leapt out of his chair to throw his arms around the dragon’s thick neck. Gently, she wrapped her wings around him, and purred quietly. 

“Rubis!! Can you believe that she sent me something? And made it all by HAND?! Oh, this makes me so happy!! I really know she loves me!”  He wiped a few tears that began to fill his eyes, and laughed bashfully. 

“Right...we can’t let lunch get cold..! Well, except the red cabbage, of course!”

It was a rather casual dinner in the beginning; excellent food, superb wine choices, and great live music. After they placed their orders, Augustine plucked a roll from the basket in the center of the table. For a while, Norman sat in his usual quiet way, but there seemed to be something stirring in his head. Augustine considered asking, but, why rush it? They had the entire evening to chat, and well, the bread was too tasty to stop eating! 

Norman finally spoke, and Augustine inhaled instead of swallowed. His eyes watered, and his face grew rather hot. Did Norman open want to dance with him? He must not have heard right over the music. 

“Did you say that you wanted to dance?” he finally replied, wiping his eyes with a napkin. “Or did you ask for anchovies? You know that I am terrible with accents!”

“Hey… are you okay?”

“’Am I okay’?? Am I OKAY??” 

Augustine hastily tucked his shirt into his pants, picked up his backpack, and swung it onto his shoulder. 

“N-NO, I am NOT ‘okay’!From the moment I get here, I get poked and prodded by security, they-they-they...detain my Garchomp, and they VIOLATE me before kicking me off the ship!” His hat and left flip-flop, which were in his hand, waved wildly in the air as he ranted on. “Oh, what a pleasant trip to Unova! The melting pot of the Regions! I don’t remember the brochure saying I would get fondled and belittled on my trip!” The professor bitterly threw his shoe down, and slid his foot into it. After his outburst was finished, he sighed. “I just......I am sorry for what I just said, Miss. None of that was your fault. That was quite unfair of me, and completely...ugly, if I may say.”

It was an odd pose, but she was attempting to hold up an oddly colored axew towards the Live Caster for him to see. The pokemon looked at the device, curious as to what it was and attempted to reach out to grab it. The professor grinned, all smiles, as she continued to speak.

“As you can see, there’s a high rise in ‘Shiny’ Pokemon residing, here, in the Nature Preserve.”

At first, the stubby claws of the Axew came into a blurred view, then the picture straightened out, focusing on the Pokemon’s pale color. Augustine quickly pulled up another screen, typed in the search bar, and Axew’s data filled the window. The Pokemon’s original listing showed its usual olive color. 

“What an amazing coloration!” he cried, eyes shining at the little dragon. “Oh! If you want to see a nice Shiny-type, have a look at this one!”

For a moment, he ducked out of sight of the screen, and a series of scuffling could be heard. When he returned, he held up a little blue Pokemon. The frog did not look impressed or interested in the screen, and gave a little grumbling croak of annoyance.

“Ah! Here we are! Meet Froakie! Isn’t she wonderful??”
