Learning Goal, Day #3
12/14/17
Alright, crushed coding practice! I didn’t get the array exercise right on the first try, but my version was pretty close and only need a few tweaks to run correctly. I definitely had the idea right, I still just need a little help on constructing “while” loops. Feeling pretty good!

So it’s not a huge change, and it’s probably just part of normal fluctuations, but it’s less than yesterday. I did make an effort to eat better yesterday, although it was far from perfect.
Ate a nice breakfast with protein and veggies today, and I am feeling good. Definitely less bloated and gross than the last few days.

Learning Goal Day #2
12/13/17
I did not do my coding practice today, which I feel bad about. I made a to-do list and suddenly found myself with a lot of work, both for work-work and for stuff at home and around the house.
I think it’s going to have to be like saving money—pay yourself first. Practice coding first thing, so it doesn’t get pushed to the side.
I did do a lot of audio editing today and made all of my folders through the Terminal, which was good review.

Goal #1, Day #2 12/13/17 I really didn’t think I was going to do it today, but a kitchen dance party and a TON of walking in place around the house adds up apparently.

220.2 lbs
12/13/17 weight
To be honest, this really bums me out. Mid-October, my partner and I finished a Whole30, which went really well. I lost about 20 lbs, going from 234 to 214. That was really exciting! I don’t think o realized quite how heavy I was, and it was awesome to find neglected clothes in my closet and to feel more comfortable overall.
I maintained some of the W30 habits for a three or 4 weeks after the end, but have slid back into pretty bad habits, including candy, cookies, dairy, etc. Shockingly, I don’t feel as good! My skin is breaking out and I am gaining weight.
Today I am going to really focus on what I am eating and limit those nutrient-empty snacks and treats. And I was sure I would be immune to holiday food...!

Learning Goal Day #1 12/12/17
Just finished two Pomodoros of working through Chris Pine’s book “Learn to Program.” I am currently on the exercises from chapter 7 and finding them really challenging. I can write pseudocode for the general idea, but I am having a hard time producing a program that works.
When I run through the solutions at the back of the book, I totally understand them. I’ve been typing the code up myself and writing line by line commentary, which has really helped me through understanding “while” loops. I think this method is helping a lot, but I can’t help worrying that I’m not doing a good job if I can’t generate the code myself. Maybe I will have to go back through all the exercises when I finish the book and write the code over again.
I am going to focus on the fact that I am doing the working and striving to increase my understanding. Must give up on the myth of “born genius.” Learning a skill takes small, consistent steps.

A reminder for the girls with big plans
To all the girls with big dreams, who have been told that they are ‘too preoccupied with success’, or that they are ‘too selfish’ or ‘too ambitious’ - do not listen to the people who speak those words. If you love something that much, and will pursue it to the ends of the earth, do not give it up for anyone. Hold it close to your heart and understand that you are not obligated to dim your sparkle for anybody. In your life, there will always be people who tell you that you are too much or too little. They will say a woman is too assertive, or too reserved. They will say she feels too little or too much, that ambition is selfish. They may even be hurt or offended that you do not think the same. Yet at the end of the day, know in your heart that you are the only one who will ever know whether you are truly enough and that is what’s important. Go out there and smash the glass ceiling to pieces.

The Method
Every ten days, I will add a new goal or method to both of the areas (coding and weight loss). These might include tangible skills, habits, productivity techniques, and others that seem relevant and applicable to my situation.
I will post at least one update in both areas each day. These posts will serve as a clear way for me to track my progress.

The Goal
The goal of this blog is simple -- track my progress in two areas of my life for one year or 365 days. I will begin with a small goal every ten days for both areas. The goals will build in each other for additive progress, ultimately attaining the following two benchmarks:
1. At the end of the year, I will weigh what I remember weighing in high school--177 pounds--for total weight loss of 41 pounds from my present weight of 218 pounds.
2. At the end of the year, I will have made significant progress in the Launch School program. This includes proficiency in Ruby and command line, among other skills.
