My Big Sore Sweet Tooth

I sit by the window in late winter. I haven’t slept yet. The sun is rising over the buildings and reflecting off the windows of the cityscape, turning each room back into reflection, and cutting my view into another tiny sliver of someone else’s existence.

I am in the most densely packed area of my city, and I have never felt more alone in my life.

A week before I’d gotten a haircut. cut an inch and a half off, put in a fringe. Something superficial to try and remind myself that I was human.

as I walked out of the salon, new wind on the back of my neck. It was the lightest i'd felt in the weeks since I moved. Looking at myself in shop windows – reveling in my own vanity, I had the sudden realisation that nobody but me would know. There was nobody in my life close enough to me to notice.

I cried on the tram ride home

I think people feel loneliness a bit like a habit. It creeps up on you, no matter where you are. It’s a comfort, an indulgence sometimes. The familiar weight of oneself falling through open air.

But like all habits humored too frequently, it walks the line of addiction. I remember so clearly, looking at the sunrise over the skyscrapers and realising I’d forgotten the sound of my own voice.

I wanted to scream then, shout and cry and remind the world that I existed, that I was alive and here and I did not want to be consigned to oblivion.

I croaked a noise out in a voice I didn’t recognise, and tried to get some rest.
