Podcast Recommendations

If I’m going to make a blog dedicated to podcasts, I might start by recommending a few of my favorites. I hope you enjoy!

Welcome to Night Vale

A friendly desert community, where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead while we all pretend to sleep. WTNV is the podcast that got me obsessed with podcasts, and by far my favorite. It's a bi-monthly show about the community radio station of the small town of Night Vale. It's a comedy/horror podcast, like a slice of life from a Lovecraftian Hellscape, featuring a diverse cast of characters and it’s own unique philosophies.

Lore

A bi-weekly look at the 'true' horror stories all around us. It's a well researched show, talking about real life murders, ghost stories, supernatural encounters, and folklore. Aaron Mahnke's soothing voice, and the unsettling music set a haunting scene that had me constantly checking to see if I was truly alone in my empty house, It’s both informative, and spooky, and I burned through the entire collection in about 5 days.

99% Invisible

99PI is a weekly podcast about architecture and design. Roman mars covers a variety of interesting topics, from the design elements behind currency and white bread, the construction of the Sears Tower, the history behind a city built by a cult, this show has a little bit of everything, focusing specifically on how and why it was built. Everything around you has a rich story about its design, so why don’t you start listening to a few.

 Average Episode Length: 20 minutes (5 minutes at the very beginning)

Hello, From the Magic Tavern

 A weekly (completely true) podcast from the magical land of Foon! HFTMT is an improv podcast about how Arnie Niecamp fell into and continues to live in the fantasy world, Foon. It’s a heavy satire of the fantasy genre, making fun of all the tropes you know and love. Red Potion addiction, wizards compelling the common folk to fight the dark lord, and of course, a shapeshifting badger.

Sawbones

Justin McElroy and his wife Doctor Sydnee McElroy tell you the horrifying past of medicine every friday, giving you a glimpse into what the opperating room was like before we actually learned what the hell we were doing. Blood letting, Mercury, Trepanation, Grave robbing, eating egyptian mummies, and strapping a live chicken to your body. This podcast has it all, and more! Also, they try to keep the language clean so you can listen to it around children, if that's your cup of tea.

What Should We Draw?

This one has an unusual premise for an audio only medium, this podcasr is about using the art of conversation to make art about the conversation. Basically, Nathan Yaffe and Caldwell Tanner from Dorkly.com and the Drawfee show on YouTube invite some friends over, hold a conversation about pop-culture, or whatever is on their mind, and then draw a picture. That's it. It's fantastic.

The Adventure Zone

 A fantastic DnD podcast featuring some of my favorite online personalities, The McElroy brothers! It's plot, while somewhat generic is quite gripping, the characters are all lovable, the soundtrack is gorgeous, and best of all, nobody takes themselves too seriously. It's a hilarious experience, with plenty of episodes for you to listen to.

My Brother My Brother and Me

Ok, I could make a separate post dedicated only to Mcelroy podcasts (and I probably will) but I’ve been binge listening to MBMBaM for the past month straight, and I can’t make this list without mentioning it. It’s three brothers trying very hard to give good advice, but they mostly just talk about horses and lose faith in humanity.
