The “Eternal Light” lamp is one of a total of three sacred objects, made by using precious possessions that belonged to Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and the Rhine (1895-1903).
After the sudden death of his only daughter, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig expressed the wish of not letting anyone use little Elisabeth’s jewellery, but instead using her jewels for a more important purpose: in addition to a magnificent golden cover for a Bible, he also designed the hanging lamp shown here, decorated with filigree work.
The Grand Duke’s sketches were handed in 1899 to the Hessian court jeweler Robert Koch, who completed this extraordinary and personal commission for Easter, 1904. In addition to a variety of jewels and carved stones mounted on the lamp’s body and the long chains, there are thirty-two FabergĂ© Easter eggs given to Princess Elisabeth by her maternal aunts, Tsarina Alexandra and Grand Duchess Elizaveta of Russia.

The Imperial Family in the Livadia Palace by Daria Buravtseva
"In my work ... I set the task of showing a long-gone era, and people whose fate personifies the tragedy of the Russian Empire. One day I was traveling the Crimea and visiting palaces, wandering through museum halls filled with Crimean air and scorching sun. At that moment, a long-gone era appeared before me as if it were yesterday.
I wanted to show the Romanovs not as the royal seven, but as living happy people. I had a desire to show that history is multifaceted and consists not only of tragic moments but is also full of happy moments in the lives of historical figures."

Hina-matsuri (雛焭り) // Peach Festival — Girls’ Day in Japan. Celebrated each year on 3 March, it is most known for displaying platforms with a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyƍ) representing the royal court of the Heian period. The predecessors of hina-ningyƍ could be Nagashi-bina (lit. “doll floating”) ceremonies, which were held around the country, where participants make dolls out of paper or straw and send them on a boat down a river, carrying one’s impurities and sin with them. The evolution from paper dolls to the wooden/ceramic ones, from throwing the dolls away to keeping them as a traditional decor has gradually led it to the intricate designs of modern hina-ningyƍ. One of the most famous parts of Hinamatsuri is the special display of seated male and female dolls, which represent a Heian period wedding, but usually described as the Emperor and Empress of Japan. These may be as simple as pictures or origami, or intricately carved and dressed dolls. More elaborate displays will include a multi-tiered doll stand representing ladies of the court, musicians, and other attendants, with all sorts of accoutrements.  The celebrations on the Girls’ Day are dedicated to wish girls health, joy and happiness.
