Even Kubo himself said that Rukia is Ichigo’s “ray of light.”

It was Rukia who did these things in the 2 short months she was with Ichigo.

It wasn’t Tatsuki, who Ichigo knew since they were 4 yrs. old.

It wasn’t Orihime, who had been obssessing over Ichigo since Sora died.

It wasn’t Chad, who Ichigo made a promise with to always have each other’s back.

It wasn’t Keigo or Mizuiro, who became close friends with Ichigo since their first year of high school.

It wasn’t Isshin, Yuzu, or Karin, who were all dealing with the loss of Masaki in their own way.

It was Rukia.

It was Rukia.

It was Rukia.

From the very beginning it was always Rukia. And only Rukia.

There’s a fic on fanfiction(.)net that I’ve kept tabs on for years to see if it’s been updated or not. While I’m no longer even in the fandom it’s written for, it just has one of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read. Last time it was updated was 2011.

The other day, I decided to reread the entire thing and leave a very in-depth review of what I thought of each chapter. I also mentioned how I started reading it when I was 13 and am now 21, but always came back to see if it was ever finished because I loved it so dearly.

Today, said author sent me a private message saying that her analytics showed that the story was still getting views even after all these years, but no one ever bothered to leave reviews other than “update soon!!!”, so she never felt motivated enough to finish it. She said that me reviewing every single chapter with lengthy paragraphs made her cry and meant the world to her. She also mentioned that she felt encouraged to write the two remaining chapters needed to complete the story and that she would send me a message the night before she updates the fic.

I’m literally sobbing. I’m so excited :’)

The rain soaks through her bones by the time she gets to Ichigo’s window. She wills her wet shoes to grip the brick. Plummeting to her death two stories below would not be a glamorous way to destroy Urahara’s gigai.

Rukia pries open the window, still slightly ajar from the day before, and throws herself onto his bed.

She heaves a sigh, mentally apologizing to him for drenching his bedsheets with rainwater. She yanks the window closed before more rain could spill in from the outdoors. The rain thunders on, relentlessly.

After he’d peeled himself off the blood-splattered ground, still clearly bothered by the Grand Fisher’s narrow escape, Ichigo had expressed that the best way to get everyone back to the clinic in one piece was to go their separate ways. Rukia would take Kon and scale up the side of the clinic to Ichigo’s room and let herself in, while he rejoined the rest of his family and got his sisters back to their beds, safe and sound. Rukia agreed with him, quickly. After all, she is still not sure if he’s forgiven her yet for showing up at his mother’s grave—in front of his entire family.

She can hear them now, opening the front door, footsteps echoing up the rafters as the Kurosakis take off their shoes and wet rain jackets. There was not much conversation—not after everything that’d happened today.

As Rukia pulls herself up from Ichigo’s bed and uses his bedside towel to ring out her wet hair, she imagines how worn out everyone must be. Footsteps travel up the stairs, slowly. She pictures in her mind’s eye: Ichigo, carrying not one, but both his sisters on his back. He sets them down gently in their respective beds, takes off their wet socks, and pulls their blankets up to their chins.

She smiles at the thought. It’s becoming apparent now. The more she’s gotten to know the strange, orange-haired kid, the more she’s underestimated him. Ichigo is not only much stronger than she’d initially anticipated, but much kinder, too.
