Thought you all should know that this piece is a sort of reflection of how William sees himself for the most part of Prime Defenders season 2, but specifically episodes 33 and 34.

This'll be some kind of character analysis rant! Most of this is stuff I picked up myself from rewatching s2 a billion times, and some other bits are things Charlie's said in rolleds.

I hope I get his character right in this explanation of the drawing, LMAO.

So let's start with the wisps.

The blue fire wrapping around him, through his ribs and out of his mouth (which is not visible for a reason, that being to show his tendency to isolate himself and put a mental divide between him an his friends; he perceives them, and especially Dakota, as real heroes, which is something he thinks he'll never be), is supposed to illustrate how he associates the wisp powers with being dead, and symbolise how he thinks that his powers will pose a threat to himself and others.

The fire wrapping around his ribs and exiting his mouth specifically represents his mindset of being too far gone (to him, the death and decay already made its way to the core of his body, his soul), and shows his feelings of his words only causing harm to those around him.

The gore and such is pretty straightforward; he sees himself as a walking corpse. Again, something too far gone to save.

The maggots, however, also symbolise something; his mental health problems.

He is, in the most simple way I can put it, depressed. He also suffers from a lot of anxiety, that being one of the causes of his tendency to choose "flight" over "fight" in 9/10 situations. This is something you can't just get rid of, or ignore. Mental issues like these will always be there, lingering and festering. So that's why I thought that maggots would be perfect to represent his exact situation with; the connection between maggots and rotting or decaying bodies, and the symbolism of mental illnesses always being there with someone, and never leaving entirely.

This, of course, is natural and human. You can't switch your brain from suffering from depression to completely fine, but you can deal with it, and learn how to heal and deal with it in a way that'll make you happier! Some days'll be better than others.

This, however, is not how William thinks (at least, not in the specific arc I've tried to represent). He sees his mental illnesses as signs that he's too far gone to save and a terrible person. Which is why I chose to give this depiction of how he sees himself on the inside an intimidating expression (almost all of his face, once again obscured), to signal "stay away, I'm dangerous." He self-sabotages and tries to isolate himself in order to keep others and himself safe, but he doesn't realise that this is the thing that hurts his friends the most.

NOW FINALLY!!! I'll give some credit to @angelstones and their beautiful writing for inspiring the maggot symbolism for William's mental issues and baggage!!! Love you spider thank youuu teehee

This is the most symbolism-heavy piece I've ever done, and I'm so glad I managed to make it into what it is :) thank you to everyone on the support on it so far and thank you to Charlie Slimecicle for writing a character that I'm this obsessed over LOL...

Hope I got at least some of this character analysis right, and did William justice in both this analysis and the piece :D
