Sometimes you need to read something twice to get it. You might need to watch a movie three times to understand it. You might have to have that album on repeat for a week until the lyrics make any sense. You're allowed to engage with it and can keep engaging with it until it means something to you. People will see a painting at a museum and laugh about not getting what the big deal is but like you can come back, you can see it at another time, and maybe that next time it'll be different for you. I'm of the belief the "media literacy crisis" would solve itself if more people just sat down and did it again. Watched, read, played, listened, etc like I don't think people are getting more ignorant necessarily I just think we're not glorifying personally replaying things nearly as much as we should be.

So I wanted to respond to this one, not to evaluate my features as “passing/not passing” but to talk a bit on racialization and transness as a larger Black trans woman. I am going to be speaking on the experience of cis women in addition to trans women.

Yes, I’m 6’2” and 260lbs. There are plenty of cis women my height/weight or larger/taller! It is not inherently a trait of solely trans women to be large. But this also means that I don’t always pass, because a lot of cis women who look like me don’t pass all the time either no matter what they do.

In this outfit running errands, I got hit on a bunch, gendered appropriately a bunch, and honestly felt the most femme I have in a while. Meanwhile, I still had a man start screaming at me on a metro train because he could see up my dress while I was sitting and “I DONT WANT TO SEE THIS MAN’S UNDERWEAR!”

Often, assumption of masculinity for largeness, for height, is something that gets inflicted on tall cis women as well, moreso if they’re an athlete or otherwise buff or “unfeminine”. Many end up with a complex about it that affects their comfort presenting anything less than high femme even as cis women by adulthood, because it’s implied they have to “make up” for their height/frame by being more feminine.

So despite this not being something limited solely to trans women, it does get significantly amplified on trans women when we have other features or traits that may affect it, such as voice, visible stubble, etc.

On top of that, Black women are often racialized as “more masculine” bc of systemic societal antiblackness. While it can happen to anyone that visibly reads as a Black woman, it gets notably worse the darker your skin is and the larger you are. I’m very lightskinned, so while I still experience it, it’s also not nearly as bad as it would be for someone much darker than me with my build.

So for larger Black trans women, we get a double whammy of “passing” tribulations, as we get the misogynistic assumption of “the larger you are, the more masculine you are” and the misogynoiric assumption that as a Black woman, we are inherently more masculine.

Both of these factors are completely out of our control as larger Black trans women. They aren’t something that can be changed by anything we do to try and “pass” because they are baseline societal bigotries currently - fuck, Megan Thee Stallion is quite literally one of the most beautiful cis women on earth while also being larger and she’s still CONSTANTLY accused of being a man/masculine online even in some of her most “feminine” presentations.

So when I say that I “often don’t pass” I’m not commenting on my features, what I think “outs me as AMAB”, etc. im commenting on the baseline societal transmisogynoir that states that someone who looks like me, transfemme or not, often does not pass.

Many people will still gender me appropriately from the jump, hit on me, catcall me, otherwise treat me like a woman - but just as often I will be categorically excluded from even possibly passing for people who have engraved these social bigotries to heart, and recognizing that doesn’t affect whether I’m “valid”, whether I’m attractive (bc I’m a fucking Goddess and stunning), etc. but affects my SAFETY and the likely of experiencing transmisogynistic or transmisogynoiristic harm or violence.

Passing is not about whether you are attractive or not, it’s about safety.

I..I can't fuck with NeroKyri. I'm sorry. Even if I completely ignore the adopted sibling incest, the writers just don't do anything for Kyrie to really give anything to work with or endear me to her? And this is after experiencing DMC4, reading it's novelization, and reading Before The Nightmare DMC5 prequel.

I really wish they'd gone with their original concept ideas of making her a knight of the order. Hell, even making her more nun-like where she works in The Order buildings doing random tasks but remains a non-combatant would've been better. That way they could've had Nero running into her while he progresses through the story, and there could've been cute little chats and conversations between them. Bonus if the conversations healed like 10% of Nero's HP to show the player how important she is to him and make said player seek her out to save on healing items.

She's shown as being extremely devout to her religion via the opening cut scene, shares that same level of devotion to Nero (when she tries to get the necklace after Dante's entrance, though it's called into severe question when she's shown Nero standing over Credo), and then has her motherly instincts tendency to nurture by throwing herself in front of a kid. After that? She's a prop. A lamp. I don't know anything about this girl. I don't know if there are any negative traits about her character other than "self-sacrificial". I don't know how Nero makes her laugh. I don't even know if her and Nero have any shared interests!

The Before The Nightmare novel pushes her innocence even further in a way that renders her actions more like a child but thinking they're framing her as angelic. What little devil hunting jobs Nero gets, she denies any money payment in exchange for food. A great idea right? Well, if she was only feeding the orphans and the children of families that couldn't feed themselves, sure. Not so much when she's raising several kids who have other needs such as clothes, shoes, toys, and a myriad of other things involved with childcare since one of them is an infant (not hers). Her devotion to Nero and fearlessness throwing herself in front of a kid in DMC4? Poof. Gone. She stands there shocked as Nero is bleeding out in the garage and it's Nico that has to yell at her to do something.

Nero literally plans to leave with Nico without telling Kyrie because he wants to bring back money this time in order to properly sustain themselves. He wants to buy her some clothes because she's only been wearing the one dress for A While Now. Like? He doesn't trust her enough to just tell her they need to accept cash on some assignments? But I'm supposed to believe they always understand each other and what the other needs to hear based on that phone call near the end of DMC5? And it's not her fault! It's not Kyrie's fault the writers don't know how to treat women! Especially not ones that aren't supposed to be snarky, sexy, or both! I just cannot hop on this ship.

the problem of fandom reducing characters who are women and/or people of colour to sexist/racist stereotypes is definitely aggravated by the fact that a lot of fans simply do not pay very much attention to these characters in the first place then subconsciously paper over the gaps in their perception with things they’ve been culturally conditioned to believe are true about people in the same category as said character
