Money, and why the government is your best friend.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-11/treasurer-josh-frydenberg-defends-the-federal-budget-on-insiders/12752102
Recently, the federal government released their annual budget – sounds SUPER interesting, right? It’s certainly something I have never really taken any notice of. Why would I? I don’t own a business, I don’t claim any benefits, and honestly, I have better things to do. I’m sure I’m not the only young person who has felt this way – it’s not something high on your list of priorities whilst studying and trying to scratch a living.
Now that I’m a father, though, it’s a bit more important. Simply put, babies cost a lot of money, and if you would benefit from more coming in, keeping an eye on where and what the government is funding can prove helpful.
This year especially, government support has been the saving grace for a lot of young people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic, so to hear that it will continue into 2021 is a relief for anyone, but especially for families who have a tight budget at the moment. The best piece of advice I was given, prior to becoming a father, was “claim, claim, and claim some more” – if you are eligible, but haven’t claimed yet, then now is the time! There’s no shame in getting government assistance – be it youth allowance, maternity and paternity leave, or jobkeeper, it all helps.
Obviously though, unless you genuinely can’t, working is the best way to support your family. Keeping up with where extra funding is going can be beneficial for anyone searching for a job, so the news that there is now incentive for businesses to hire people aged between 16 and 29, means that the door is open for more work, and there are plenty of industries still crying out for workers - even through the pandemic! For me, I picked up a job as a disability support worker – not something I ever planned to do before, but it’s a stable industry, with flexible hours, and the potential for career advancement to take place quickly. Even if it’s only temporary, taking any opportunities that come your way, and making the decision to improve your financial position before the baby arrives is a decision you will never regret, and the feeling of security makes it all worthwhile.
