Okay, but I actually adore the romantic arc in KPop Demon Hunters. There's so little time to tell this story and to focus on all its nuances, but the way the movie gets us there is absolutely amazing and doesn't feel cheap at all. And I think part of the reason why is the fact that Rumi and Jinu never really develop past what technically counts as just a crush.
It doesn't try to convince us that what they shared was something unbeliavably deep or like some kind of soulmate bond. It doesn't act like they were perfect for each other and how their love could make it through everything. It works precisely because it shows the tragedy of how little time they had together and how they never got to explore that on their own terms.
And we can all relate to that feeling of loss of something that could have been more. All of the elements of a great romance are technically there but all these other outside elements are working against them and all we get to see at the end of the day is the unexplored potential.
Rumi and Jinu connected on a very human level, that's true, but the tragedy of their relationship is that it couldn't really become more and what we end up mourning is the potential they had, the fact that they could have been so much more if given a chance.
So often stories try to convince us of these stronger-than-anything romantic arcs, but since a lot of the time romance is the B-plot at best and there's no time to develop it properly, we end up with the characters basically skipping all the stages from attraction and straight to pure and unadulterated love.
KPop Demon Hunters doesn't do that.
Instead, it focuses on the connection that was broken too fast and that's precisely why it resonates with us. It doesn't try to pretend that their romance is something that it isn't and that fact, more than anything else, makes it feel authentic.
I feel like a different ending would have cheapened the story somehow. We got a happy ending, yes, but it doesn't make it all good. It doesn't erase all the pain that we had to go through to get there.
And at the end of the day, it's not some grand love story.
No.
Instead, it's two broken people who connect, who feel attraction and who never get to explore what it means. The romance itself isn't some kind of be-all and end-all kind of thing.
It still matters, though.
Why? Well... because they still got to meet each other. They still got to heal, in their own ways. And that matters, too. Even if it wasn't meant to be the way we wish it was. Sometimes, that's just how it is.

I think there's actually a lot going on with Murderbot's fairly vicious 'killing Leebeebee felt good', including it not wanting to admit that it was hoping for some positive feedback, but I think the majority of it is just the very simple explanation that this is its first clear-cut, simple, clean (from its POV) win since this mess started.
From the get-go, though it tries to insist it totally doesn't care, Murderbot blames itself for Arada and Bharadwaj being attacked because it was distracted watching its shows, nevermind that it was on-site and shooting before the thing surfaced. (I think it's also telling that, despite all its 'humans are dumb and never listen' it doesn't say anything about how Arada and Bharadwaj brushed it off and didn't listen when it first told them to run, but that's another post.) It saves them, but Bharadwaj is injured and Murderbot does not kill the sandworm, or at least it doesn't die where it can verify that the threat is truly neutralized.
Then its humans sneak off without it and nearly die and it not only couldn't do anything about it, it couldn't even gather intel because it wasn't there.
Then it takes out one SecUnit at Deltfall, but fails to take out the other, gets hacked, and has to be rescued by its own clients (the opposite of how this is supposed to work!!!).
And then it keeps Mensah from getting exploded by the emergency beacon, but it doesn't keep the hopper from being damaged, and it gets injured, and it deleted the repair manual for the hopper so it is totally and completely to blame for them being stuck and not being able to protect its stupid clients who it doesn't even care about.
But all it has to do with Leebeebee is blow her head off! And it does! She is dead and the threat is gone! Hooray! It even saved that jerk Mensah was worried it wouldn't bother defending! It is literally such a good SecUnit!
Like, Murderbot doesn't have an issue with killing in general so long as it's in control of its own actions to do so, but yeah, after the shitty, stressful couple of days it's had? I bet killing Leebeebee felt damn good.

I just listened to the best scene in fugitive telemetry again and god it's still so fucked. Murderbot is SO happy and proud of itself. It's talking SO much about its feelings like that it's happy a thing worked or scared something is going to break but it's. Talking. Fast. And a lot. And it gets SO happy when it talks about this being a SecUnit plan. Kevin r free delivers it as a revelation, a tentative pride. It gets into the cargo hold and it talks the humans down and gets the six youngest into the bag and safely on the way to the station, it manages to do some INSANELY risky shit to keep the thing from killing them all- at one point one of the humans is so convinced that it's over that they say "thanks for trying, station security." It's not wearing a suit or anything! It will die with them but it came anyway and they KNOW this! They know that it was willing to die to keep them from being fucking jettisoned into space! Their captors TRIED to jettison them. They hit the button. The only reason they didn't die right then is that mb stopped them. It then jammed open the hatch and when a guy in armour so fancy the humans mistook it for a SecUnit comes down with a big gun MB drags them in and physically disables them. Then it climbs into the hatch and physically jams it open, it holds a gun out and stops all the hostiles and it has now. Saved everyone. Every single human survived, INCLUDING the hostiles. It's crazy, dangerous, difficult plan worked completely and for once, it doesn't have a single thing to say about how shitty it's plan was or how much it failed or how much better it could have done. It tells the humans to stay here while it makes sure it's safe to leave and--
And then it just feels something hit it in the back, and identifies specifically that it was to a location that would be fatal to a human. It turns around and sees the leader of the humans, the one it has been primarily speaking to all this time. She's picked up the gun the guy that had fallen in had been holding, and not only did she shoot it in the back, she shot to kill. Murderbot doesnt say a word. It just grabs the gun and then climbs up the hatch and leaves. The narration stops being the minute to minute descriptions- "I opened the hatch, I jumped in, I saw the humans" and turns to just. "And then I left." And that's it. It just leaves and has nothing more to say about it. Not even when Indah says she doesn't really know why they shot it. It just moves on and returns to complaining how shit it is at its job as it goes to confront ballin.
She shoots it, in the back, to kill, the SECOND it's done saving them. Murderbot just looks at her. It has nothing to say. It takes the gun. And it leaves. I am FUCKING insane about this oh my god

I have no particular stance on whether estrogen would have saved Shinji, but I'm looking at it from the family dynamic angle, and... well, Jesus Christ. On a good day, Shinji already looks like a teenage soft butch version of Yui Ikari – can you imagine how Gendo would react to his "son" slowly morphing into his dead wife?
