Gideon was still trying to get rid of the glitter from the birthday cards his nephews had made Lily, Molly had sent a dozen gifts and insisted she got a detailed account of the festivities. As soon as Marlene had said the word party, Gideon was already offering help, so far everything had been running smoothly. There was however a small part of Gideon who worried about the amount of people currently in the Gryffindor common room, as someone who had costed the red and gold house a good amount of points, he could not believe he was getting concerned, what had become of him? Before he could spiral any further a sight interrupted his thoughts. He kissed Marlene and hastily made his way towards his best friend. ❝Hey mate❞ Gideon said taking a good look at what Edgar was carrying, ❝whatcha got there?❞
where: lily evans’ birthday bash when: january 1978 who: edgar bones & open
Edgar had arrived slightly late to the party, a little caught up in how he should transport Lily’s gift over to the event. Since it was made of real marble it was pretty happy, but its stature made it slightly easier to carry considering it was only about tall enough to fit on a bedside table. He’d been planning her gift for a while, knowing it was something that she’d probably hate but hopefully found as amusing as he did. A small marble statue, nestled in his arm and rested against his body to help distribute the weight along with a large bouquet of roses, not lilies. He was quite proud of himself for thinking of such an ingenious gift and as he entered the party he stopped by the nearest wixen. “Hey, have you seen Lily?”

in a kinder universe, he would have walked away from the war. i cannot imagine who he would have become, but I think he would have been extraordinary
gideon married marlene mckinnon.
he got offers to play for the falmouth falcons, the montrose magpies, and puddlemere united, ultimately joining the montrose magpies.
with his athletic abilities and charming personality he would’ve become a quidditch darling. a lucrative contract and multiple sponsorships, gideon would’ve told marlene that they could have as many kids as she wanted.
his words would’ve come back to haunt him when they found they were having twins.
their children would’ve been sorted into gryffindor.
during the second war gideon wouldn’t have actively be a member of the order, as his very public persona would’ve made it impossible to keep the anonymity the order needed at the time.
gideon would’ve joined the fighters at the battle of hogwarts with his nephew charlie. fighting side-by-side his wife marlene once again.
gideon would’ve kept playing quidditch until it was time for him to retire gracefully, still at the top, and with his fans clamoring he still had plenty of years left in him.
gideon would’ve become a stay-at-home dad while marlene continued to work at the DMLE

When his roommates didn’t arrive to school Gideon could not stop himself from thinking the worst, that somehow the boys he had grew up with had ended up on the other side of a killing curse, was it because of their involvement with The Order? Thank Merlin for Fabian and Ed and Marlene, who stopped Gideon from spiraling any further, if something as horrible as that had happened they would’ve already told them. But it still wasn’t enough to keep Gideon from worrying, from coming up with a million ideas as to what had happened. He was sure he couldn’t get through another night of being alone with four empty beds around him, maybe he would just sleep next to the fireplace, so when he walked into their dorm he almost bursted out crying.
❝Lupin!❞ Gideon said with relief, he crossed the room in a few strides and gave Remus a hug ❝bloody hell, I was so worried about you guys, is everyone back?❞ he asked finally letting go, ❝sorry❞ Gideon apologized, growing up with Fabian, Gideon learned that some people don’t particularly like physical contact, and while he considered all four of his roommates close friends, and would trust them with his life, something told him Remus didn’t like much being hugged. ❝What the hell happened to you guys? Is it... war related?❞
Where: Gryffindor 7th year boys’ dormitory When: 10th January 1978, afternoon Who: Remus && @prewettxgideon
They never made it to lessons that day, as they got back from the Ministry too late, but there were certain people Remus wanted to speak to before the Hogwarts rumour mill caught on that they had returned. When he put his bag down in the dormitory he found himself looking at the one bed that had been occupied the past few days. What had Gideon thought about finding himself alone in the dorm? And given how many secrets the Marauders kept from him, was there a chance he was finally becoming suspicious of what exactly they got up to the nights they weren’t there. Remus sat at the end of his bed and waited.
When Gideon came in, Remus was reading up on Patronuses. He looked up from the book and cast it to the side. “Hello. I’m sorry to say you don’t have the dorm to yourself any more.” He tried for a smile, to joke about the situation, but it fell a little flat with his resentment over all that had happened still too strong.

( Marlene ):
If she didn’t have the dangerous habit of hiding bits of herself from the people she wanted most in her life, Marlene might’ve cried in front of him. That was the first thought that rang to mind. Yeah well go… you are an expert at it –leaving. She stopped to the words, back to him for a moment. She could’ve kept walking, students stuffed into the small area from all those who had been at Hogwarts and set out. She could’ve held her head high. “Really, Prewett?” She nearly hissed his name through gritted teeth, turning slowly. The book stand near her, she was almost tempted to lobby one of them at his head. “You’re going to moan on about how I left when it was you flirting with Alice for the whole bloody school to see! I’m so sorry I didn’t sit there and fruitfully be embarrassed by the fact that the bloke I wanted to go with was hitting on his ex-girlfriend the second he got a chance to be alone with her because her date was being verbally beaten down by her father!” It was explosive, her voice rising with every word. She was angry, resentful. Hurt. Broken hearted in a sense, but Marlene couldn’t come to admit it.
You wanted to piss him off by going with out with a good for nothing like me… well it worked, he was angry. She took a step back, like she’d been hit. Like that gut punch was the final straw. She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn’t do it, looking up to the wooden beams holding the ceiling up instead of him, trying to breathe. “That—“ She could feel the lump rising in her throat, hands on her hips, shaking her head. “That is not true.” She shook her head. “That’s not true—that’s NOT true!” Talking about things were exhausting, and Marlene had never been one eloquent enough to voice her thoughts. She remained on two extremes—too upset, so drained she might’ve cried. Or she might’ve punched something. All those supressed feelings reigned deep within the witch. That he didn’t need some hot-headed bird. He didn’t need her, shouldn’t have ever wanted her. Alice just makes more and more sense. Marlene thought bitterly. But she wanted to cry, break down as she had with the girls. Wish it hadn’t been said. Wish she had hidden, kept hiding instead of facing him.
You didn’t have to pretend that you were actually interested in going to the ball with me… Marlene finally snapped. That space that reigned in front of them, as she shoved him lightly. “You prick, Gideon! I never would’ve done that to you! Why don’t you sit back and realize you didn’t have to pretend that you were interested in me because you wanted to take Alice! That’s why you run to her, you’re always around her when I’m looking for you! I wanted to leave that night with you, I was looking for you! My dad said—terrible—“ She took a step back, hands up in defeat, one raised to hastily wipe the stray tear as it fell. “No—no, this isn’t my fault, you ran off, you ran to her. You took me to a ball, you played me like some pawn just to get Alice’s attention, and everyone saw it, Gideon!” She shook her head. “And yeah—I thought we were friends.” Not that Marlene wanted to be just friends. “You have no idea—how I felt—s-seeing the pair of you look so bloody cozy, I wasn’t interested in being your pawn to get her back, if that was your game.” She released a sigh, like it was stuck within her chest. “And since you clearly don’t want to be friends with me, no sense in tellin’ you now.”
❝Please just❞ he said in a soft voice, he knew the best thing he could do was let Marlene scream at him, let her anger out, it was dawning on him that it had all been a misunderstanding, and even if Marlene wanted nothing to do with him he still wanted to make things right. ❝I-❞ where was he even going to start, Marlene had every right to be mad, but he had to at least explain, ❝did your father get mad at you because of me?❞ he asked looking at the ground, ❝’i won’t have my only daughter dating a screw up’❞ Gideon said recalling the way Alastor McKinnon had looked at him, ❝he knew about my failed application to the hit wizard program... I’m sorry Marlene I never wanted to get you in trouble... I just-❞ he shook his head, ❝I’m sorry I wanted more than what we had, I know you said-❞ Gideon closed his eyes briefly Marlene was so angry she would probably never talk to him again, he might as well just come clean, he opened his eyes but he couldn’t look at her, ❝but I couldn’t just keep being friends, I- ever since they announced that stupid dance I couldn’t stop thinking about us going together... Alice never even crossed my mind until I talked to Frank, do you know what I said to him? ‘Why would I got with Alice?’ because you were the only one I thought about since the start...❞
Gideon took a few tentative steps towards Marlene, ❝Alice is one of my best friends, that’s the reason we ended things, ‘cause we were better off as friends... that night at the dance we were talking about you, she told me to stop being an idiot and to tell you how I really felt...❞ Gideon admitted with a sad smile, the courage he had mustered that night to finally tell Marlene he wanted to be more than just friends who slept with each other had left him as they were ushered out of the Great Hall at the end of the dance, but he would never forgive himself if he wasn’t honest with Marlene, ❝I’m sorry I didn’t honor our agreement, I’m sorry I wanted more than what you made clear this was going to be❞ he motioned between the two the them, ❝...I’ll understand if you don’t want to talk to me anymore, I promise to stay away from you if that’s what you want, I know I said I wanted to be more than friends, but I’ll really love to have my friend back...❞
#//listen making this shorter was a challenge™#and it kinda doesn't make sense and is all over the place but pls take it#//dat gif tho. amazing#marlene mckinnon#int; marlene

Gideon Prewett’s Zodiac Sign Born on May 27, 1957 - 2:36 PM
Gemini Sun Taurus Moon people will always have a stable emotionality and direction in life. Their Gemini side may often get them into trouble, but the Taurus one will help them solve any issue. Not to mention how fast they will bounce back from trouble when their Moon will influence them. The Moon in Taurus can help the Sun Gemini be less flighty. But they will always have problems learning from past mistakes. Because both their signs are spring ones, it can become more difficult for these people to forget about their childhood behavior. It’s possible they will always remain youthful in both looks and ways.
The character of a person with the Sun in Gemini and the Ascendant in Libra connects feeling and spirituality. Everything is connected by words. They are skilled, adapt well, and have a special charm. They are always on the road; From them good traveling salesmen can turn out. They open doors that are closed to others, their charm and humor are pleasant even if something is done at the expense of others. The organization on a large scale succeeds them to a lesser extent, they rather deliver information. They do not know how to be permanent, but their impermanence itself turns out to be worthy. The people around love and pamper them more than others, and eventually they learn to use it. They know how to justify themselves; The right to be late they include in the contract, relying on the fact that those around them are generous.

The news that the school would be closed until further notice did nothing to help with Gideon’s mood, he still took the Knight Bus to Hogsmeade as soon as the Doctor Who Christmas special was over, his mother already had taken the traditional Christmas picture -in the sweaters Molly had knitted for all of them, with their initials on the front- that will sit atop the fireplace until the next year, so Gideon packed his things and said goodbye. He hoped he had not ruined Christmas for the family, he was usually the life of the party, but as much as he had promised himself that he was not going to let his feelings consume him, he had failed. It was his fault really, a stupid idea, to think that Marlene would want anything else than the physical relationship they had.
Amongst the things Gideon packed were the presents from his friends, he loved his friends, and as he wore a sweater Frank had given him, and wrapped himself in the blanket Ed made for him, Gideon realized that things will eventually get better, as long as he had his friends by his side. As Gideon followed advice on how naps made everything better and was getting comfortable on the couch in front of the fireplace, he felt something. What followed was the one thing he could’ve never anticipated, facing Marlene.
Gideon knew the best thing to do would be to wrap himself in his blanket, turn around and let Marlene stare at Edgar’s face, but he found himself unable to stop ❝Yeah well go... you are an expert at it -leaving❞ he shrugged, he shouldn’t be angry, but he could not stop being mad at himself, for being so stupid, the words just kept spilling, ❝you could’ve just told me you didn’t want to go to the Ball...❞ that you didn’t want to go with me, ❝it was a stupid idea, I know that, it’s just ... I thought- ❞ Gideon shook his head. ❝You know while I waited for you to come back, while I looked around for you, I wondered ‘why did she agree to go with me?’ and then I talked to your father and it all made sense❞ he scoffed, ❝you wanted to piss him off by going with out with a good for nothing like me... well it worked, he was angry❞ Gideon said remembering the conversation he had with Alastor McKinnon, ❝but the thing is, I would’ve helped you, if you had just told me about it... you didn’t have to lie to me, you didn’t have to pretend that you were actually interested in going to the ball with me... I thought we were friends.❞
Where: Gryffindor Common Room, December 25th, 7:08 pm. With: Marlene McKinnon & Gideon Prewett
Marlene was tired. Tired and sober. That kind of headache that somehow still resounded in her mind, as she stared up at the ceiling of her four-poster bed. As soon as she had done all that she needed, she ran. Came back to the school. Like trying to escape a shadow that lingered no matter what she did. She couldn’t get the image out of her mind. The way he leaned down, the smile—the same kind she was sure he had reserved for her. How stupid she had been. How silly she had been to cling to that idea. Laying in her bed since arriving after lunch, she’d tried sleeping it off, but it didn’t work. Legs tossed over the side of her bed, tugging at the ends of her shorts, as she moved to her trunk. Kicking it open, she grabbed the blanket within, wrapping it around her body. Wand in hand, she descended the steps. The thick fleece was a welcomed cape, keeping her warm. That she didn’t think, didn’t goad on her thoughts. The yawn that erupted from her lips had her closing her eyes, and as she moved to almost sit down, nearly sat on someone. Tumbling down, a mess of blanket and limbs, as she flipped the blanket over her head, the mass amount of curls blinding her for a moment, as she felt fury pass through her. “Who the fuck sits there in sil—“ But her voice fell flat immediately, like she couldn’t breathe. “Gid.” It was like she was breathing, and somehow forgetting to do so all in the same. Widened stare, as she sat before him, as her breath hitched. “I have to go—I have to go.” She whispered, repeating herself as she fumbled before she stood, rising to her feet to move back up the stairs before he caught her. Before he made her come to terms with all the worst things she’d been thinking since the Ball.

you are not head or tails; you are the coin || gideon & alecto
(( @cruelecto ))
December 23rd, 1977 Diagon Alley, London
Maybe coming home for the holidays had been a bad idea, Gideon was definitely not feeling himself, a fact that everyone in his family had mentioned several times -even the kids had noticed, Bill was old enough not to believe Molly when she said Gideon had caught a cold, but Charlie had insisted that Gideon had ginger tea because that’s what mummy always gives me uncle Gid, with honey and lemon, and then proceeded to find the comfiest blanket in the house. And that’s why Gideon was currently doing some last minute shopping with a sticky little hand holding onto his, to show Charlie that his attention and care had worked, and Gideon was feeling much better.
Molly had suggested taking a pram but Charlie had argued that he wasn’t a baby anymore and he wasn’t going to get tired like Molly had warned Gideon, so far the five year old was being true to his word. ‘... the vipertoo is from Peru and is the most ven- venosum-’ Charlie said struggling to pronounce the word right, ❝poisonous?❞ Gideon offered, ‘no uncle Gideon! poisonous is when you eat something, when they bite you they are venomosus!’ Charlie shook his head as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, ❝venomous❞ ‘yes that! but -but the most dangerous dragon is the horntail and they are from Hungary’ Charlie said with the conviction only a five year old could possess, right before yelling Quidditch!, letting go of Gideon’s hand, and running after a golden snitch, ❝Charlie! Charlie slow down!❞ Gideon yelled after his nephew and began chasing after him. Whether someone had lost the snitch, or it was a publicity stunt from one of the shops, it didn’t matter, because somehow Charlie had managed to see the tiny golden ball where Gideon had not.
❝Charlie!❞ Gideon had started to sound desperate as he lost Charlie to the crowd of last minute shoppers, ❝Molly is going to kill me...❞ Gideon was seconds away from pushing people around or straight up casting a spell when he caught sight of the familiar bright yellow sweater Molly had dressed Charlie in grabbing onto someone’s leg, ❝Charlie what did I say about letting go of my hand!❞ Gideon had tried to sound stern but he was sure he just sounded relieved, ❝I apologize, he -❞ Gideon began to say to the stranger, who turned out to be a face he was familiar with, ❝-got away from me❞ although he doubt she cared.

event; yule ball
While Gideon had never been one to worry or even care for fancy balls, this one is different. Since the announcement there was only thing in his mind. Not one to know much about fashion, Gideon asked for all the help he could get, and with magic everything was possible.
Gideon will be attending the ball with Marlene McKinnon.

If anyone would have been paying attention they would have noticed something was off with Gideon. Not in the way he acted, no, after years of sneaking around with Fabian and Edgar to perform illegal (Fabian originals) spells, Gideon had perfected the always cool, calm, and collected facade. But he was currently on his way to the library of all places, while it was true he had panicked at the beginning of the year and promised himself he would become a better student, this little adventure had nothing to do with it. He had been tasked (he volunteered) with retrieving information from a specific book, in a very restricted section, to ask for a note from a teacher to be able to get into the section would mean raising suspicion about what they were doing with the information. Gideon volunteered by claiming he had better abilities for sneaking around, but he did it because Fabian and Edgar had actual futures ahead of them, if Gideon were to be caught and expelled it wouldn’t really change much.
The task had been going great, Gideon had made it to the right shelf, and had successfully found the book, all that was left was take the necessary notes and he would be done. But as he walked to a table Gideon noticed a person already there, he unsuccessfully tried to walk back the way he came, as the person called out to him. ❝Hey there❞ Gideon said with his most charming smile, ❝I do hope you know that me hiding had nothing to do with uh- trying to scared you... I just didn’t want to bother you...❞ he braced himself for what was bound to happen next, if he was lucky it would only be having points taken.
Where: Restricted Section of the Library With: Andromeda Black & anyone
In the grand scheme of things, Andromeda understood the level of prejudice that reigned free within Hogwarts to those who bore green and silver robes. While most considered Slytherin a production of heinous persons–that which a prime example being that You-Know-Who himself once called himself a member–Andromeda liked being a Slytherin. Not in the ways that Bellatrix prided herself on it’s pureblooded based selections, that there was an amassed wealth reigning in one area, maybe something Narcissa appreciated. The ideals of Slytherin set the precedence, not in so many extremes as some took it, was something she enjoyed. Being a Leader, having an opinion some might not agree with–it all reigned free within them. It was one of her many thoughts as she leafed through the book, seated within the Restricted Section of the Library. Certainly she could’ve been working on school work, for a future where she’d be a wife and mother, raise pureblood babies–according to Druella Black–that was what her calling was in life, apparently. Hearing a stirring from the shadows, she didn’t look up, as she flipped the page. “No sense in lingering in the shadows,” She called out to whoever was there. “Anything in these books is vastly more terrifying than you would be.”

( Lily ):
( Fabian ):
Fabian frowned as he listened to his brother. He understood him. Really he did. “Believe me, I know. I’m bloody terrified too.” And guilty and useless and angry. The Ravenclaw feels responsible for what happened multiple times over. Not only was he the Ravenclaw prefect and a member of the Order, he also specifically attended the party to make sure nothing bad happened. What a bloody failure that turned out to be.
“I..” I don’t know what to do, the older twin almost said. Truly, he didn’t. But he didn’t want to admit that to Gideon. His brother has always been his protector in many ways. However, when it comes to sticky situations like this, Gideon would always look to Fabian. More often than not, he would have something to say to help get them out of the mess. This time, he was coming up empty.
He sighed in frustration. “Maybe we should meet with the others. Maybe… we need more people to - “ Fabian was interrupted by the door swinging open. He immediately shifted into a dueling stance just like Emme taught him. His wand was still emitting light, illuminating the intruder’s face.
A wave of relief washed over him when he recognized who it was that barged on them. “Lily!” He didn’t know that Lily was up and roaming the halls like he was. He guessed that she probably couldn’t sleep that night as well. He watched as her cat enter the room and approach Gideon. “Yeah and I was em - “ He remembered where they were. “I was just looking for a first year’s wand. She told me she lost hers so…” He gestured towards the piles of wands around them. “So yeah… Gideon, go to bed.” He knows it’s a useless attempt. Lily wasn’t an idiot. But years of getting caught in the middle of hijinks with Gideon has conditioned him to spew the first excuse that comes to mind.
@bloomingevans
Lily squinted as she tried to backtrack to what had happened when she’d opened the door with the only focus being defending herself at the time. But the need hadn’t rose for that and instead she’d caught two of her oldest friends talking about something. He’d said: ‘— people to-’ Some involving people. Others that they might be associating with. From the look in their eyes by the light of Fabian’s wand and prior to the confusion and shock on their faces upon seeing her, it’d been something serious.
They were like little brothers, in a sense. Lily had met Molly who visiting her twin brothers once on a Hogsmeade weekend years ago and adored the fellow red-head ever since. If the big sister couldn’t look after her meddling little brothers at school, Lily had always assured her that she would. So the moment they started speaking to her she could tell they were both hiding something. She was 11 years old when she was astonished at the schemes they could concoct and the lies they could devise at a moment’s notice. But Lily was 19 now and the behaviorisms were all too familiar to her.
“Rubbish,” she interjected, putting a hand out to stop Fabian from going anywhere. “No one is going anywhere. Something’s wrong, I can tell. No one’s wand is lost and no one hides inside a dark empty wand room at midnight for nothing.” Lily sounded worried now, but anyone knew her that the warmth and concern did nothing to diminish her intent and stubbornness. She wasn’t going to coddle them right now. “What people were you both talking about? You’re worried about something, I can tell. And I’m not just asking you because I’m your Head Girl, but because I’m your friend. If there’s something going on, I want to be there with you both through it.”
> @prewettxgideon
When you have a sibling you realize that everything people said about how they are the ones who truly know you is true. But when you have a twin the connection goes further than that. As children Gideon believed they had a telepathic link, even as they grew older -and apart, the way they could communicate with each other with one look never went away. And now as words were not necessary for Gideon to tell Fabian how scared and worried he was, he remained convinced there was no one in this world who knew him better than Fabian. And as he was being caught in the middle of a lie Gideon wondered if perhaps Lily was coming pretty close.
❝Uh--❞ Gideon searched for the right words to say, the right thing to do would be keep up the lie, sure he was risking a few points being taken from his House, but the Order would remain a secret, and most importantly Lily’s involvement in the Order would be delayed -Gideon knew that eventually Lily would join, she was skilled and smart, the kind of person they needed, kind and always willing to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves, but she was also like a sister to them, and the longer it took for her to find out about the organization the safer she would be. But after Lovegood’s death was anyone really safe? And hadn’t all of this started because Gideon believed more people should join the fight? Was this the universe sending a sign?
There was of course the small matter of not being able to openly talk about a secret organization. Not that Gideon believed that Lily would run around and tell people about it, but what if she didn’t think it was a good idea, a good chunk of the members were not even out of school yet, and if Gideon at times doubted that what they were doing was the best course of action, what would Lily think? Gideon looked at Fabian, there was no way Lily would believe anything other than the truth. ❝Lily what if... what if I there was a way that uh- that we could do something about- well about what’s going on out there?❞

( Marlene ):
It wasn’t some edge of disappointed, that tactless speech one’s parents would bestow on a child to make them feel small. It was a twinge of annoyance that it didn’t come from him. A flicker of guilt—as though he might’ve not trusted her with the information. And that struck Marlene, as it laid heavily on her mind. She tried running through the reasons. Maybe he didn’t think she was good enough. Hell, maybe she wasn’t. Marlene doubting herself wasn’t new—it wasn’t vocal, either, but it wasn’t new.
There was an inkling of narrowed hues that fell to the student trying to hook up with Gideon—wasn’t it clear she snatched him, quite literally—as she turned. His comments only turned the corners of her lips. “You answer wrong and you might just found out what other charms I’m really good at, love.” She retorted back, a cocked brow matching a sweet smile, peeled back, bright expression.
Brows raised, a split moment of being annoyed enough to cross her arms once the lasso was re-attached. “Watch what you say about her, Gideon, I’ve no issue giving you a leg-locking curse and watching you try to use that scarf to balance yourself.” She flicked the fabric with an extended finger, before moving back to cross her arms against her chest. That night, not nearly as drunk as the others. Sober to know no one could overhear, tipsy enough to feel the heat rise to her cheeks as she looked up at him.
“Gideon, I know you’re trying to be funny, but I’m not laughing.” She spoke, tone unnerved, as she clenched her jaw. Even if she tugged him to a safer spot, secluded enough to talk but not as openly as she wanted. His long and lanky form towered over her own, as teeth sunk down into her bottom lip for a moment. Arms crossed, gaze dropped, slowly to move around the space, making sure no one was eavesdropping, before settling back, locking with his.
“Why didn’t you, don’t you think I’m good enough? What is it, am I not a good enough witch to you to qualify?” The words spilled out before she could stop them, a penchant act of her intoxication, as she squeezed her eyes shut. Turning her head away for a moment, looking back again. Surely, it looked like something. Searching for something, she expelled a sharp breath. “Don’t answer that.” For someone already in, already doing something, it would’ve been more damaging to think she might’ve not been even worthy of the chance.
“If we’re mates, I don’t want to find out things from Lily.” She paused. “At some point you have to be able to trust that you and I share similar views on things like this.” Licking her lips slowly, shaking out the amassed curls to go with her costume. Her stance closed off—a blame of alcohol, eyes narrowed for a moment, a huff fell from her lips. “You stand any closer, Prewett, and Skeeter will have something to talk about in that bloody paper she hands out to everyone.” She whispered, a lop-sided grin slowly edging forward. “You wouldn’t want that, would you?”
Gideon raised his arms up in surrender and took a few steps back, he knew better than to piss off Marlene, further than she already was. He had let her talk without any interruptions, a life growing up next to Molly taught him that women do not like it when they are interrupted, and he valued his life -realistically it would be his face what suffered- more than anything, so for a while all he did was give Marlene a chance to let it all out, he took a hint and stepped away from her, giving her as much space as she needed.
It was clear that she was not in mood for his antics, whether it was his jokes or flirty advances, and while it took Gideon a bit to understand why it was such a big deal for Marlene that he had not told her about The Order, when it finally dawned on him it was looking in a mirror. He more than anyone understood what it meant to feel like not being enough, and could not honestly believe that Marlene would think he was in any position to judge anyone’s abilities, but he didn’t mention that right away, instead he just looked at her and tried to find the right words. There was so much he wanted to say, and yet worried that he might not know how and end up making things worse.
❝You I really meant what I said about Lily❞ Gideon decided to start by what was easier to address, ❝I love her as if she was my sister, and I’ll die before I let anything happen to her... if you can’t believe anything else I said or am about to say... please at least believe that...❞ he said with smile looking at the ground. And that had been the easiest part? He took a deep breath before venturing into the next thing.
❝I was going to tell you❞ Gideon said one more time, ❝I really was, you have to believe me, I-❞ he shook his head, ❝I do trust you Marlene, and I was going to tell you before I even considered telling Lily❞ he didn’t know why but it was true, what did that say about him? That he cared more about Lily’s safety than Marlene’s? If it was up to him he wouldn’t want to have Lily involved, no matter how bright and skilled she was, if there was someone with future it was Lily. Not that Marlene didn’t have a future, but he could see it in her eyes, the same longing in his, the need of having something bigger than themselves to be a part of, a chance to prove everyone around them wrong.
❝That night when we were in the kitchens I-❞ he had been determined to tell her about it, but in the end he had been a coward, ❝but, and I know it might be hard to believe, I sometimes do listen to my brother... my annoying wiser older brother...❞ Gideon shook his head, ❝he has always said that whoever we bring in... that what happens to them... well it’s gonna be on us❞ he bit the inside of his cheek, ❝and I guess in that moment it was real you know, I- I knew you would say yes, and even if it was your choice to fight... I-❞ he shrugged, this was war and it had already came for them, who was he to deny anyone the right to fight, ❝I’m sorry... and if it’s any consolation we only told Lily ‘cause she walked in on us arguing about, well this exactly, bringing more people in, being more active... trust me I would’ve told you in a couple of days if I had gotten the chance...❞ Gideon took a tentative step towards Marlene, ❝Mars I am glad she told you, because well it’s clear that whatever is happening out there has finally reached us here... and I’ll be honored to fight by your side... we good?❞
