Vibrant ‪#‎Pakistani‬ wedding in an ‪#‎American‬ setting! Syed Baber Ali, a well-known Pakistani businessman and former Finance Minister of Pakistan, held his wedding ceremony at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington DC in 1954. Did you know that U.S. President Richard Nixon and his wife attended the wedding? Wonderful!

Definitely something taken out of a Hollywood movie? Not to be. These are the Rakaposhi-Haramosh Mountains, Karakoram range, Pakistan. Amongst the largest in the world, these mountains are a trekker’s fantasy.

The magical waters from the Chronicles of Narnia?
Can’t be. This is the exotic Ghizer River in Gilgit-Baltistan. Wrapped around lush, green and pleasant landscapes, Ghizer is a diamond in the dirt.

Not at all! This is Kalam Valley, Swat. A tourist hot-spot, labeled as ‘mini-Europe’ by many.

Bani Abidi
Karachi series
2009
A sideways glance at a growing manifestation of ethnic, religious and cultural homogeneity in an erstwhile cosmopolitan space. The photographs in ‘Karachi - Series 1’ hypothesize a silent moment when the original denizens of the city step out of their homes to lay claim to a space that is also theirs. Shot at dusk during the month of Ramadan, when most Muslims of the city are breaking their fasts with their evening meal, the artist contemplates the vast emptiness of the city streets and imagines them to be inhabited differently.

#NOT A BUG SPLAT
The first ever Cannes Lions Award for a Pakistani agency. Congratulations!
Since 2004, drone strikes in Pakistan have killed an estimated 3500+ people, a disturbing percentage of which have been innocent civilians. Including more than 200 children. The Foundation for Fundamental Rights has been working to raise awareness of this crisis. Drone operators routinely describe their casualties as “Bug Splats” since viewing humans from far above gives the sense of an insect being crushed. Our strategy was to not only address pilots directly and create dialogue, but to also raise awareness globally of this otherwise ignored human-rights issue. http://winners.canneslions.com/2014/direct/entry.cfm?entryid=32488&award=99&order=0&direction=1
