Teenage Dreams and Other Illogical Things by @hopenight

Nedzu tasks Aizawa Shouta to investigate some oddities amongst the staff at Aldera Middle School. However, due to said oddities amongst the staff, it's unwise to slip Shouta in as a transfer teacher. Thanks to a temporary physical age regression quirk, Shouta is primed to go undercover as a student at Aldera with two objects in mind: figure out the discrepancies in the staff and keep the only Quirkless student at Aldera, Midoriya Izuku, safe. Deeply unimpressed at having to be fourteen again, even physically, Shouta finds an unexpected kinship with the kid. While he tries to keep Midoriya safe and solve the cast, Shouta ends up rediscovering some things along the way as well. Whether it's setting a bully on the path of redemption or reigniting his love of heroics, Midoriya Izuku and Aizawa Shouta are about to change each other's lives for the better.

A very fun read! Sometimes you just want to read a good fic with a strong platonic relationship and an interesting plot.

A lot of fun interactions happen at the Midoriya apartments so for the full title page spread I took a pic of them from the wiki and quickly converted it to vector before editing the colors.

For me, the sort of unofficial color scheme of Aizawa and Midoriya is yellow, green, grey, and red. I don't have any red papers in my stash that I felt matched the vibe and almost everytime I try to make a red paper it looks more suitable for a horror themed work 😅

So, I did some marbling and made this cute paper I covered the book cover with and made the color scheme yellow, green, grey, and pink.

The edges are painted with yellow watercolor and sealed with beeswax, and the endbands were my first foray into using silk thread. Grey, of course, to go with my choosen color scheme. I understand the silk thread hype now.

I already know I cased it in a lil uneven, but I'm very please with the cover design so I'm happy with it and very excited to get it put of the press in the morning.

But!!!

I'm pretty sure I've messed up the sequence of events or am missing something because I (think) I have all four offerings and still have like a week left, but when I foolishly checked out the tag I was greeted by so many characters I haven't encountered yet! And they look like ones most people have encountered if we're taking the amount of fanart into account.

Should I just keep exploring more before putting up my offerings so I can find them, or is it more of a random chance thing and I should finish this run before going to the next?

Because I am a basic person at heart, for the full title page I used an edited pic of the Orion Nebula from NASA.

You know.

Because this fic is all about Orion.

There is some really nice star imagery in this fic with Orion's symbol featuring a starburst and how he talks about the stars so I went with that for the title page and the book cover.

The bookcloth was an experiment on making shimmery, metallic bookcloth and what ended up working was using gold polysatin cloth and basically making paste-filled bookcloth but with gold acrylic paint instead of plain acrylic medium or starch paste.

For the endbands, I used embroidery cotton and metallic thread and finally understand why people curse said metallic thread in crafting so much lol.

I kept the actual typeset for the book pretty simple though I suppose in hindsight I probably could have asked for permission and added yayadrawsthingz pic of Orion's pleasurebot days design 🤔

Finished another book recently. Can't show the title as I maaaaay have created a copy of a book that while no longer being printed or even sold as an ebook, is still under copyright lol.

Used lokta paper for endpapers for the first time and really like how they look. Definitely a stronger paper than it seems at first glance. The fibers can shed a little though if you're doing edge decoration though.

Shockwave and Soundwave were abandoned Sparklings. No one came when they were crying out, bots too busy to care or too out of it on drugs to realize there were sparklings near by.

Just realized I didn't post the final pics! I was waiting for the recipient to get the book first and she did!

This is the only hardback giveaway I've ever done and it was hard! Took me ages and ages so I thank Liz for her patience.

It all turned out great except for the ribbon, which was my own fault.

I'm a particular fan of the metallic vinyl on the cover, even though it gave me so much trouble.

Also every single one of the 500 pages stuck together because I tried to use a watered down glue to "set" some sparkly Micah powder. I had to separate them one by one.

Other than those hiccups though it's so pretty! Have a video to see the shimmer

First pamphlet bind in... like, forever! Done because I really enjoy yaya's valveplug blog and thought it'd be fun to bind one of her fics! I'm pretty sure this was actually one of, if not the, first Transformers One fics I read. Beware if you visit her blog though! It's incredibly active and there's like 8 million posts made a day to get lost in!

A person in the bookbinding discord made these really cute pamphlet binds so I wanted to hop in on the bandwagon too! I made the cover by editing this vector image from freepik and then put some clear holographic sticker paper on top to add some durability and shimmer. Not sure how well it shows, but I did a chain link stitch for the sewing.

I kept the typesetting pretty simple because I already knew I was gonna spend an embarrassingly long amount of time trying to draw the title page. Body and chapter title text is in Merriweather while the chapter number is in Nosifer. The cover uses Nosifer and Harvest.

And now the cover image with Safe For Work Orion Pax pulling his weight. (it's more highly suggestive than anything, but the full cover page will be one my bluesky if you actually want to see it.)

The title page was printed on presentation matte paper and then joined onto the rest of the text block so the colors would show true, unlike how it would if I printed it on the cream colored paper I did the rest of the booklet in.

Truly the struggle of typesetting is real. I wanted to like this font so much. I typeset and did the little fixes to make the text flow as best as I can through the pages. Did another test print. Came across how the italics look in a sentence. Sucks so bad. Back to my beloved Merriweather.

Gonna take a break from typesetting that pdf it's transformers exodus I fully admit that I'm typesetting that thing because I refuse to pay 60+ for a used mass market PAPERBACK and do a cute little bind of something much less painful. Gonna limit myself to doing 1-2 chapters a day at most once I get back to it because I could literally feel burnout setting in.

I'm gonna need to do a pamphlet bind or something soon. Currently typesetting a book from a pdf and losing the will to live with each chapter I'm going through.

One of my goals for this year is to do bookbindings in different styles other than my usual sewn-board or casebinding so when I run a fanbinding panel next year I can say from personal experience the pros and cons of different bindings and have examples of different techniques. But it's hard to do other bindings. Not because they're technically difficult (usually) but because casebindings and sewn-board bindings feel more thematically neutral to me. I know its not the case, but when I think about doing a coptic binding or a stab binding there's this voice in the back of my mind going "hm, but does the exposed spine and visible stitching contribute to the theme of the book?"

Something to work on I suppose.
