It’s forever so funny to me that in a show called Arrested Development where the whole thing is that the characters never change, they never get better, not only does a main character get better, but it’s Gob, of all people. Not Michael, Gob. And it’s because he falls in love with Tony Wonder. That just delights me.
“Gob has gone over to the light side, I guess you could say, by finally being happy and in love.”- Mitch Hurwitz
#that’s the power of love#idk if gob is Mitch Hurwitz’s favorite character but it feels like he is sometimes#gob bluth#tony wonder#blunder#arrested development

My biggest pet peeve is when people think that the Scarecrow, the Tin Man or the Lion actually are stupid, heartless and nerve-less. Like, no, the whole point is that they DO have these things. That was the whole thing.
#state farm commercials setting me off#also when someone said gob bluth would be the scarecrow#because he’s stupid#AAAAA wrong!#he’s the tin man#and if there was an argument for him being the tin man it wouldn’t be ‘they’re both stupid”’#wizard of oz

Spoilers for season four and five(I saw you said you haven’t seen them yet in the tags, it’s nothing major but yah)
The fact that it’s never Michael bringing her up either. In the first four seasons, it’s pretty much always someone else bringing her up. And it feels significant that the first time that Michael actually opens up about it is post-Search. At Search, he wasn’t forced to hide his trauma, pretend that the bad stuff he went through didn’t shape who he is. While people are a little put off at first, he’s quickly accepted for who he is and even gets to contribute in ways that are relevant to him; teaching self defense from the family. This is something he’s never experienced. People have often scoffed or gawked at Michael and his siblings for “not caring about family” to the point that Michael felt the need to hide the fact that his family existed from Rita because he felt it was easier not to explain. And he never, NEVER talked about Tracy and how her death made him feel.
But here he is in season five, returning to a place he’d asked the family to sell because it was so haunted by the death of his wife. Just last season(and this one? Honestly I can’t recall), he’d tried to sorta replace his dead wife with red hair with an alive girlfriend who has red hair, start his life over like none of this had ever happened. And yet, here he is, and I do like to think this could be somewhat credited to the warm acceptance of him, all of him, by the other employees at Search. He doesn’t have to hide anymore…
…And then of course, the person just walks away mid conversation, weirded out by Michael’s sharing and telling her son not to listen to the man 😭
I like to think that Tracy grounded Michael, and through that improved some of the family relations as well as helped Michael be more independent from his parents. She was someone who could keep him in check when they started to manipulate him, and after she was gone…he lost that voice. I also like the idea(that I’ve adopted from other people) that Lucille liked her because she batted back and Lucille is much more willing to tolerate people who don’t just shrivel in her shadow, it’s more entertaining to throw shade back and forth. And George hates people who do that to him so that’s probably why he doesn’t like her.
very interested in what the dynamic of the bluth family was before michael’s wife died. like yes we know the family wasn’t as close but the way she’s mentioned throughout the series is fascinating to me. we know lucille liked her and george sr did not, which already kinda tells me so much about tracy. it’s implied her and michael knew each other as kids (“and then Tracy won’t marry me”) and that they got married young because of her pregnancy. idk it’s kinda interesting to me how much and how subtly she’s mentioned. the writing feels very realistic to me and I like she’s truly never forgotten
#sorry this was long#Tracy my beloved#Tracy? Tracey?#they can somehow write the most intricate stories with tons of hints and great wordplay#yet they can’t keep track of how Michael’s wife’s name is spelled#anyway she is one of my many arrested development Roman empires#arrested development

“The big question of the whole series for me was, 'Beyond all the plot, the narrative and everything else, was how do these three people work together? How do these three people fit together?' These three people learn to love each other and those elevators end up, in some way, saving each other.” — John Hoffman @pscentral event 36: trios

So, I just noticed that hanging right next to that (cheesily awful) poster of Tony at the Gothic Castle, there’s a poster showcasing Gob (in a mask, no less!) in the Sword of Destiny illusion. Considering Gob only did said illusion once and got half his fingers chopped off halfway through it, who knows why on earth he gets a fancy painted poster except aww representations of Gob and Tony right next to each other. And a nice, subtle continuity nod to boot.

Arrested Development season 5 episode 7 montage of Gob Bluth and the Laguna Closet Conversion team desperately putting together a closet conversion act for himself and Tony Wonder set to "Don't Rain on my Parade" by Barbara Streissand has done more for the LGBTQIA+ community than whatever the hell that trainwreck of a musical was. Save me Gob Bluth.
