season one

first episode, adorable twilestia nuzzle scene!

celestia messing with the mane 6 and especially twilight. hilarious. twilight implying celestia would go easy on her.

brief, but twilight's whole cutiemark story.

season two

- lesson zero

celestia messing with twilight part two, and twilight being a wreck. ohh it's great.

- a canterlot wedding

if you like angst this has a brief moment just for that!

season three

- the crystal empire

twilight's biggest fear being disappointing celestia..

if i remember correctly (this info is all on no recent rewatch of mlp), there is some twilestia here.

same as above. also you should watch it just because twilight is awesome.

the entire ending scene alone is worth watching for. celestia dragging twilight to the dance floor;

season six I can't think of any moments for! :( luckily, following seasons more than make up for it, in my opinion.

hey hey! in my bio i wrote profile theme is bi lesbian twilight. (mainly because I just think the color scheme is so her. i don't have concrete headcanons for her.)

Mentor, Mother, Lover

the pupil's graduation doesn't rid the years of schooling. It's complex because it can't not be.

celestia is one of the only ponies around twilight during her formative years that isn't her immediate family. she's her personal mentor and it's safe to assume she's being entrusted with the care of a filly during that. I don't think their relationship and its many stages and dynamics through the years fade into nothingness.

regardless of how it's done & acknowledged in the art / fic (i.e. is the romance fresh? is it something long seated? is it something undefinable, just for twilight and celestia?), I'm just glad to see it played with. anything that depicts complex dynamics and ships that tie in multiple types of relationships has my heart.

Above Romance, There is Twilight and Celestia

needless to say, twilight and celestia are not a traditional couple. mentioned previously, this just means that instead of trying to fit that mould, i love to see twilestia exploring what their relationship means for them and not for anyone else.

romantic love is the undercurrent, always there and undeniably one of the things tying them together... but there's so much more. I think it all blends together and often can't really be defined by a generic label.

I think twilight loves in a much more mortal way, and celestia loves in a much more unconditional, no matter what it's going to be labeled way. even so, celestia is pulled into being more mortal via twilight's love for her, and twilight is pulled into being an alicorn because of celestia's.

(a separate thing this makes me think is that I can't assign queer labels to celestia. not in a "she's above them" way, but in a way that i just can't picture her being anything for anyone but twilight.)

Slow and Steady Wins The Race (Intimacy)

they take things slow, mainly because would it not be overwhelming to twilight to be with celestia at first? would it not make sense for celestia to be patient — she has all the time in the world, after all, and eventually, twilight does too.

and would it not be weird?

I deeply enjoy celestia not having lovers, not in a long time (or even never, really), and twilight, who's only ever really had eyes for her mentor. twilight's still unlearning her need to please celestia, and celestia's still learning she doesn't have to be alone — and that she isn't.

they're both unprepared, but they learn from each other in many ways.

it's so incredibly telling that the whole song is about these ponies' dreams, their aspirations, things that maybe aren't exactly likely but damnit, the gala is spectacular, and miracles happen at miraculous places..

..and twilight sparkle, protege of the sun, who's frankly spent the season making friendships and forging (what will prove to be) lifelong bonds with people as well as being said protege practically her entire life, has her own little verse where she sings about having celestia's attention the whole night.

at the gala, with the princess, is where I'm going to be

we will talk all about magic and what I've learned and seen

it is going to be so special, as she takes time just for me!

every twilight and celestia interaction in this episode is so baiting the shippers. celestia you can't be saying this stuff.

they're the only two that don't go insane in this episode and it's so fucking cute. celestia has fun, and twilight still gets to spend some time with her. every gala episode is twilestia.

twilight and celestia have long dropped calling each other by their titles. twilight freely calls her celestia, and celestia is overjoyed about it.

but in her royal chambers, from under the sun goddess, twilight can't help but call for help from the Princess, calling her nothing but princess celestia. celestia recognizes this state, and only soothes her in it, preening her wings a bit and making calming motions with her magic on her lover's coat as her hooves are quite occupied at the moment. twilight might be a full grown mare, but her Faithful Student needs her just as much as before.

thinking about how twilestia fanfic writers will often employ the "we've grown out of the student and mentor dynamic so now its morally fine" angle and I do respect and enjoy that approach, but I think there's something so special about the idea that maybe we never fully grow out of that dynamic, maybe twilight just doesn't forget how celestia practically raised her, but they just look at that and go "well, we can make something new. we don't have to forget the past to make room for the future." and it's different because it can't not be. twilight is still comforted by celestia's motherly aura and celestia still enjoys caring for one of her little ponies, it's just something else now too.
