Apparently today was PTSD Awareness Day, so a little late I’m gonna pitch in: PTSD is not just triggers. PTSD is hypervigilance, PTSD is insomnia, PTSD is hallucinations and nightmares, PTSD is paranoia and constant, low-level fear. PTSD is distrust of everybody you meet. PTSD is a million different things.

Triggers can be anything, and it’s important to know that, but it’s important to understand that triggers are not the be-all and end-all of the illness either, and that many triggers are not the kind of thing that can be adequately warned for or described in neat lists. There is a very specific definition of trigger that many people on this website have started using, and it’s not an inclusive or a useful one.

Support your friends with PTSD when they respond to triggers in ways that you don’t expect, or don’t know how to ask you to tag a trigger because they don’t know what it is. Support your friends with PTSD who don’t have normal triggers, because they still have PTSD. Support your friends with PTSD who have symptoms that you’re not as familiar with.

That’s a favo+rite o+f mine. It’s a crying shame that vio+lence seems to+ be the mo+st effective means o+f educating peo+ple abo+ut go+o+d manners. The regulars kno+w the rules, thankfully, and were kind eno+ugh to+ help me fix the ceiling.

How very kind and generous of him to leave a sum of money for your troubles. It is most unfortunate that people refuse to show just the slightest bit of decency in a place of business.

Hm. I don’t know if it counts as a story, but there was a time that one of my patient’s boyfriend at the time came in saying that I was unqualified to help her due to my sexual preferences. Fast forward a few weeks and he was in jail with two black eyes on accounts of abuse, and my patient asked me out for a coffee date which I had to respectfully decline.

There’s also the people that have volunteered for experiments only to spend the entire time speaking about how psychology was a “made up science.” Ugh always an annoyance to listen to.

Hmm… O+f co+urse the o+nly o+nes I can remember are bar fights I’ve had to+ settle.

Ho+w’s this fo+r a tale: a drunk o+ut-o+f- to+wner was giving o+ne o+f my emplo+yees a hard time and asking fo+r services they were unwilling to+ pro+vide. He started to+ get his tro+users in a twist and was refusing to+ take no+ fo+r an answer. A few o+f my regulars tried to+ get him to+ calm do+wn and get him o+ut o+f there, but fists started flying and it go+t messy fast. I’m behind the bar and a bo+ttle almo+st hit me in the face.

I put a bullet in the ceiling and everything fro+ze. All I had to+ do+ was po+int a pisto+l at him. The out-o+f- to+wner paid his tab and left in a hurry.

I have to admit that one made me laugh a fair bit. It seems he was quick to understand the message you were trying to get across to him once he had a bit of encouragement.
