IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH
Tumblr media
WARNINGS: absolutely none. Just some pure, sweet content.
PAIRING(S): Nico Hischier x Fem!Reader
SUMMARY: in which Nico Hischier finds a sick Fem!Reader downstairs on the couch in the middle of the night.
Nico woke up in the middle of the night and reached his arm out to find Y/N, feeling the warm and slightly damp sheet instead of her skin. He lifted his head up from the pillow, his eyes attempting to adjust to the darkness as a crease formed between his brows. The right side of the bed where she would usually lay was empty.
Sitting up and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, Nico noticed that the blanket was pushed back and her pillow was gone. The nightstand was covered in used tissues, but the box he had brought her hours prior wasn’t sitting on the edge of the table. He kicked back the covers, legs swinging over the edge of the bed and feet finding the floor.
His feet padded across the floor, quickly glancing at the bathroom to notice the dark room before opening the door to the hallway. Nico made his way downstairs, taking a peek into the kitchen, but ultimately finding her on the couch in the living room. Her figure was slightly illuminated by the glow of the TV, screen paused and Netflix questioning whether or not she was still watching.
Y/N was wrapped in the blanket they kept in a basket next to the couch, head resting on the pillow she’d stolen from their bed. Her lips were parted and Nico could hear her jagged breathing. She’d woken up earlier that week with a sore throat and had shrugged it off, thinking the cold weather was to blame. The day after that, she was reduced to breathing exclusively from her mouth, nose so stuffy that countless blows into tissues made absolutely no difference.
Nico moved to crouch in front of her sleeping body, her face peeking out of her blanket cocoon. Stray hairs were stuck to her sticky forehead and his fingers brushed the strands back, feeling the burn of her forehead as he did so. A frown washed over his face, his heart aching for her. If there was one thing he hated more than being sick himself it was seeing her in such a weak state. She shifted and cracked open one of her eyes to be met with Nico’s worried gaze.
“What’re you doing down here, süsse?” Nico questioned, words almost a whisper and hand resting on her cheek.
“Didn’t wanna get you sick.” Y/N’s voice was hoarse and she found herself trying to clear her throat, only to erupt in a fit of coughs. Nico helped her sit up and reached for the glass of water on the coffee table that she had most likely poured herself before falling asleep. He handed her the glass once her coughs had settled enough for her to get a good breath in and sat on his knees in front of her as she drank.
"No, no, no.” He cooed, kneeling over in front of her. "No, c'mere." She melted into his embrace, nosing against the side of his neck. A few small, pathetic sounds escaped her lips, surprising both her and Nico.
“I'm sorry for being being so dramatic." Y/N whimpered. “I just feel so shitty.” Her hands clenched, fisting the soft material of his t-shirt.
“That’s not you being dramatic, that’s you having a normal reaction to not feeling well.” He soothed, his hand moving up and down her back. “You need to be in bed, love.” Nico reminded her, his other hand resting on her covered thighs, thumbs rubbing gentle circles.
Y/N shook her head as she closed her eyes, leaning against the back of the couch. He wondered how much sleep she had actually gotten since moving down to the living room.
“I can sleep on the couch if you’re worried about me.” Nico offered even if the only thing he wanted to do was hold her as close as he possibly could.
“No.” Y/N croaked out and he noticed yet another tear leak from her closed eyelids.
“Oh, süsse.” Nico shifted off of his knees and onto the couch next to her, pulling her into his side. His chin rested on top of the blanket on her head as her legs draped over his lap. She let herself relax into him, having no strength to fight him. His bare skin felt cooling against her cheek and she tightened the grip she held on the edges of the blanket engulfing her body. “Do you wanna come back up with me?”
“It’s too hot up there.” She explained and Nico immediately became aware of her trembling against him.
“But you’re shivering, Y/N.” Nico attempted to reason with her, not understanding her choice.
Y/N merely shook her head, telling him she wanted to stay put. She began coughing again and her right arm moved up to her mouth as she attempted to keep her coughs in her elbow. The movement of her arm caused the blanket to fall off of her shoulder, exposing the sweat soaked back of her shirt to him.
“Do you want me to go get you a new shirt? I can give you one of mine.” Nico offered, hand coming up under her top to rub the sticky skin of her back.
“Wanna take it off.” Y/N mumbled as she tried to free her arm from the confines of the t-shirt. Nico gestured for her to hold her arms up, grabbing the hem of her shirt and pulling it up over her head. He decided he would try to make her as comfortable as he could instead of fighting her, no matter how incoherent some of her requests may be.
“Better?” Nico asked. She nodded lazily, reaching for the blanket once more. He kept rubbing her back, whispering how she was okay, and everything was okay.
“No, it’s not.” Y/N croaked. Her throat burned, and her stomach was churning. “I’m gonna die. I’m dying.”
“You’re not dying.” Nico informed her with a soft laugh. “You’re fine, süsse. You’ll feel better in a little bit.”
“Well, living shouldn’t feel as shitty as this.” Y/N grumbled, not appreciating his lack of understanding.
“You’re alright, love.” Nico slinked his arms tight around her waist as he nuzzled his head into the crook of her neck and planted an abundance of kisses there, her skin burning just to the touch.
Nico helped wrap her naked torso and lie her back down on the couch, positioning himself in front of her to keep her from falling off the cushions. Y/N suddenly seemed so small to him as he snaked his arms around her, bringing her closer. He could feel her breath against his neck and pressed his lips to her forehead.
“I don’t want you to get sick.” Y/N repeated her thought from earlier, entangling her feet with his. He couldn’t help but chuckle because even at her weakest, she could only think of his health and wellness.
“Just let me take care of you, please.” Nico begged, reaching to grab another tissue and helping her wipe her runny nose.
“Fine.” Y/N huffed, closing her eyes once more and nuzzling against Nico’s skin. “Can’t blame me if you do get sick, though.”
“Never.” Nico smirked, discarding the used tissue, and watching her breathing even out as she started to doze off once more.
“Hey, Nico?” She sleepily whispered, turning her head to the side.
“Yes, süsse?” His deep voice rumbled through her body and the sound alone had her feeling more at ease.
“Can I see your hand?” Her boyfriend’s expression turned to one of confusion, but he didn’t question it as he held out one of his hands. She grabbed on to it, lead it under the blanket, and placed it gently over the area of her cold, sticky stomach. Looking back over at him she asked sheepishly, “Human heating pad?”
Nico threw his head back and she smiled as she watched his adam’s apple bob up and down as he let out that honey coated laugh she loved so much. “For you? Anytime.”
The two of them got situated for good this time and as Nico laid his head down on the pillow, he was careful to not jostle his one hand around too much, wanting her to be as comfortable as possible. As they settled in and continued to steadily breathe in and out, Y/N reached down and lightly held onto Nico’s hand, wanting to still be touching a part of him as she tried to stabilize her breathing.
Y/N’s eyelids began to feel heavy as her breathing slowly started to become slightly more manageable due to the soothing feeling of Nico’s warm hand. Just as she started to drift off, she heard her boyfriend utter one final term of endearment. “Sleep well, love.”

i don't know who needs to hear this, but guilt, self-hatred and shame are not sustainable sources of growth and healing. you can't hate yourself into feeling better, or being better. you can't repeatedly punish yourself for your flawed humanity and expect wholesome results.

Just so you all realize and see it in action:
This fic was finished in 2015 and the author hadn't had a comment since 2016. They appreciated the comment even though it was just emoji hearts, they were happy and surprised to receive love on their older fic.
Don't stop commenting just because it's an old piece or because you think you can't come up with something smart, witty or thoughtful to say.
Just say anything. Just put an emoji. Just let them know you appreciate their work.

For those who don't know, Rafah Crossing is closed. Meaning Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are technically not allowed to go into Egypt through Rafah Crossing (with exceptions, like holding a foreign passport) so in order to evacuate, Palestinians need to bribe Egyptian border security officials. The standard price used to be about $5000 - 7000 per person but some Palestinians have been told to pay $10,000 per person just to cross the border, forget other expenses like food and boarding.
For a group of people who are enduring genocide and the complete destruction of their homes that money is impossible to raise without the help of fundraising. That and the collapse of the UNRWA is the reason you're seeing so many Gofundmes nowadays. The entire aid system is gone with the exception of local aid organisations that have limited reach.
So if you see a credible fundraiser, please at the very least share it so it can reach more people. This list by @el-shab-hussein is a good place to start.

Yay, unsolicited advice time! Or, not really advice, more like miscellaneous tips and tricks, because if there's one thing eight years of martial arts has equipped me to write, it's fight scenes.
.
Fun things to add to a fight scene (hand to hand edition)
It's not uncommon for two people to kick at the same time and smack their shins together, or for one person to block a kick with their shin. This is called a shin lock and it HURTS like a BITCH. You can be limping for the rest of the fight if you do it hard enough.
If your character is mean and short, they can block kicks with the tip of their elbow, which hurts the other guy a lot more and them a lot less
Headbutts are a quick way to give yourself a concussion
If a character has had many concussions, they will be easier to knock out. This is called glass jaw.
Bad places to get hit that aren't the groin: solar plexus, liver, back of the head, side of the thigh (a lot of leg kicks aim for this because if it connects, your opponent will be limping)
Give your character a fighting style. It helps establish their personality and physicality. Are they a grappler? Do they prefer kicks or fighting up close? How well trained are they?
Your scalp bleeds a lot and this can get in your eyes, blinding you
If you get hit in the nose, your eyes water
Adrenaline's a hell of a drug. Most of the time, you're not going to know how badly you've been hurt until after the fact
Even with good technique, it's really easy to break toes and fingers
Blocking hurts, dodging doesn't
.
Just thought these might be useful! If you want a more comprehensive guide or a weapons edition, feel free to ask. If you want, write how your characters fight in the comments!
Have a bitchin day <3
