when talk about disability & immigration, specifically “disabled people harder/not allow/cannot immigrate”, can we also like. be specific about. some group disabled people more affected n targeted than others? like disabled people who
with transmissible diseases & illnesses
HIV/AIDS
physical n mental disorders n disability that “may endanger public”
need (or assumed to need), or “depend on,” or “be burden on,” governmental support n benefits—like financial assistance, long term nursing home, group home, etc institutionalization
^ or likely become that in future
this incomplete list, n each government have different standard for each—like some countries ban you if you one of those, even if have own resources (like family) to support you.
n also want explicitly point out how vague some these are. how some these, is assume. is about future, you maybe in future need these so we deny now.
especially with right wing & facism rise in world. these disabled people often one of most vulnerable group people in own country. n they also group people most explicitly banned from escape to other countries. can we talk abt that too when we talk about blanket disability & immigration

Here is what being nonverbal and able to speak could look like:
• randomly their mouth saying single words or a few every so often, but never able to say words by choice
•Rarley being able to say one or a few words by choice but almost always not
•only speaking in echolalia
•speech sounding like baby babble / just randomly talking and others are not able to understand what they are saying
•being able to speak but not being able to speak at all to communicate (sometimes called "non conversational" or "non commutative" depending on other factors)
•being able to say a few words, for example name and address, or "help!" For emergency situations or "no" and "yes",
something that can be worked on with a speech and language therapist often
when it's clear they probably won't ever be able to speak many words
so decide to put a lot of effort into practicing words for emergency situations, and other situations to
•and more!
Also, this post is not about, "you could be nonverbal and just not know it!" NO,
if you are nonverbal you know you are nonverbal (unless very specific situations, like for example having a severe ID and having very little if any self awareness)
and the people around you know you are nonverbal.
This is about making people aware some nonverbal people can talk a little and about why,
NOT for self discovery, so don't use a random tumblr post to diagnose a very huge thing.

You've gotta love Jews more than you hate Nazis.
You've gotta love trans folks more than you hate TERFs.
You've gotta love your unhoused neighbors more than you hate the billionaires.
You've gotta love immigrants more than you hate ICE.
You've gotta love queer kids more than you hate christian fundamentalists.
You've gotta love fat people more than you hate the diet industry.
You've gotta love disabled people more than you hate the insurance companies.
You've gotta love your fellow humans more than you hate the worst that humanity has to offer. You don't have to like every person you're fighting for, and you sure as hell don't have to give up your righteous anger, but hate is ultimately corrosive.
You've gotta love.

Transcript: "I have just been reading papers about how AAC is a second language, because of how it is learned, and because it has its own grammar and structure, also because it is part of a unique culture just like ASL is its own language with its own culture.
So congratulations to all my fellow second language learners. You are awesome!"

My thoughts
You can be smart and be high support needs.
You can be smart and struggle with basic care tasks.
You can be smart and be diagnosed with an intellectual disability, even if you struggle with reading writing and math.
You can be smart and sleep in an enclosed special needs bed for your safety.
You can be smart and need constant supervision.
You can be smart and need your toileting handled by someone else.
You can be smart and still have violent meltdowns.
You can be smart and still need government assistance.
You can be smart even if you were in sped your whole life.
You can be smart and still need a guardianship and/or Conservatorship.
You can be smart and nonverbal, even if you struggle with AAC.
You can be smart even if they told you your IQ is low, IQ is notoriously shit at measuring intelligence and why they use it in diagnostics is beyond me.
You can be smart and all these things and more.
You can be smart even if everyone else in the room will always think that you’re not cause of your disability.
These are all things I have seen or apply to me. Being emotionally smart is also a thing too. When I would have violent meltdowns in sped and would be yelled at or met with traumatic situations due to the teachers not knowing what to do, it was often my intellectually disabled classmates who knew how to talk me and caress me out of it and they were a hell of a lot smarter then the teachers in those moments. Don’t let people think you’re not smart for any reason and if you don’t believe you are take a good look at your strengths and come back.

sometimes when i try to describe my relationships with being visibly autistic, i think "visibly developmentally disabled" explains it better. where i live, autism awareness is really low, so people who see me don't think about me in correct medical words and diagnoses, etc. they probably don't know what autism is, how it presents, maybe don't even know the word autism. but they do know clearly that something is wrong with me. that something is wrong with my mind (sorry for the wording. they put it like that and i don't know how to express the specifics of this treatment better).
some people seem to think that visible autism means "everyone know your exact diagnosis and understand what it means and think about you in proper medical terms," something like this. i think this idea leads people to say things like "autism is invisible disability" (presuming always and for everyone) or "well everyone's autism is visible if you know where to look."
visible disability is not about everyone knowing the specific diagnosis by look. visible disability is about people knowing that you are disabled by look.
another example: i'm a mobility aid user (cane/crutches/wheelchair depend on situation), and i'm visibly physically disabled because of it. people don't know my exact diagnosis by look, but they know i'm disabled in a physical way.
similar for visible autism: people may not know exact name of condition, but they know that i'm disabled in a developmental way. and act accordingly.

If you ever think history impressive or grand, here’s a story for you:
Right after ww2, Jews were freed, but basically had no citizenship to speak of, and the allied forces weren’t that!helpful. So a group called the TTG was formed to help emigrate (read: smuggle) Jews from Central Europe, to Mediterranean ports, where they would take boats to Israel.
The TTG did this by piling the Jewish refugees into trucks bearing British insignia, their operatives dressing up as British soldiers, and just openly driving to port cities.
If they were ever stopped by actual military forces, they would say they were a part of a covert supply missing, under special orders from Major Tuches. They would stress that the contents of the trucks was super secret and to not be disturbed under any circumstances. They saved over 300,000 Jews like this.
If that sounds reasonable to you, here’s the thing: TTG stands for Tilhas Teezee Gesheften, and the operatives named one Major Tuches as their commanding officer whenever they needed to.
Or, to translate that into English, the event that saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees was called Operation Kiss My Ass led by Major Asshole.

Sure, you know how to self-flagellate, but do you know how to apologize? Saying "I'm a stupid idiot" is not the same thing as saying "I did something wrong."

this is your random reminder to CHECK IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING FUN
are you enjoying scrolling tumblr? watching youtube? reading that book? playing that game? drawing that art? doing that activity? if not,
YOU CAN STOP AND DO SOMETHING ELSE
you don't have to stick to something that you are doing for fun if it isn't fun for you anymore. You can come back! If you've loved it before you are likely to love it again! but you can stop!
Don't get stuck in a loop of doing something that you think should be fun when it isn't! You can put it down for a bit! Maybe that's the very thing that will make it fun again later!
