Aragon’s ‘Nuestra Senora del Pilar’ – 12th October

On 12th October every year, Zaragoza celebrates ‘Our Lady of the Pillar’, or Nuestra Senora del Pilar. This festival celebrates when the Virgin Mary supernaturally appeared to St James the Greater as he was preaching in what is now Spain, while she was in Jerusalem. The event is commemorated in a wooden image, which is enshrined in the Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar.
