Ok the thing about this quote is that it perfectly sums up my view of English classes. During college, on of my professors would constantly drone on and on about how it was their job (and now ours, as students of his) to dive so far deep into literature and find even the smallest bit of symbolism. We read around ten books in the first semester and one of them was lord of the flies. We spent two weeks on the first chapter trying to get all we could out of the conch and what it might or might not mean. William Golding was a teacher in England who HATED children, and in specifics, boys around the age of 12. He legitimately wrote LoTF because he hated kids. There was NO underlying messages in that book. None of the whole “Jack represents nazi Germany” bullshit I had to shit through. Because sometimes, it really is that simple. Just like dying from old age. Simple.
