This is my favorite photo that I have ever taken to date. I went to Yellowstone with an idea in mind and I was able to capture that idea. But when I took this photograph I knew it was going to be monumentally better than the other one I took of bison. I liked this one so much I debated on if I should even put in on IG, I didn’t want to take the value from it in anyway I guess. I’m not trying to boast or be vain about this one, I just really am proud of this photo, and as my own worst critic that is a lot for me to say. Prints are available on my website, link in my bio. The Yellowstone Experience This shot played out on the third and final day of my trip to Yellowstone. This massive bull bison lumbered through the snow and lifted his head up just as he passed in front of the mountain range. It was like he was striking a pose for the cover of NatGeo. I went to Yellowstone specifically for this shot. The first couple of days went by and I got some amazing photos and had even better experiences, but I still didn’t get what I wanted. Finally on the 3rd and final day of the trip, a big herd of bison crossed in front of us while we were driving. The were on all sides of the guides vehicle and moving fast. I had only a moment to change from my telephoto lens to my prime lens. I stuck my hand out of the window and fired off a quick burst of my shutter. I ended up with this. Looking right into the eyes of a giant bison, seeing the calmness in its large demeanor and knowing that it didn’t have a care in the world for the vehicle we were in. As great as it is to experience something like this, it is still important to say that you shouldn’t approach wildlife, not even in a park. This leads to them getting used to humans and can end with individuals getting hurt. This is wolf 1234, he was recently kicked out of his pack and has started his search for another. When we came across him I had the fortunate experience of talking to a member of the Wolf Project who was able to give me that info. He spent a good hour circling a heard of bison and howling some companionship. He only gave me a few moments to get his picture when he stopped to look right at me. Not a lot of people get to see wolves on their trip to Yellowstone or get to spend time with one of the scientists of the Wolf Project. I took a trip to Yellowstone recently, it was hands down the best wildlife photography experience I’ve ever had. On the last day we had perfect conditions and set off to find the animals. We spotted a herd of bison and pulled over at the nearest pull out. After a few minutes the lead bison brought her herd up over a hill and right into view. Stopping only for a moment to look right down my lens as I was laying on the ground, assessing how much of a threat I was for sure. It was truly a surreal experience.
