And since I’m on it, genuinely what the fuck is up with how people write Sylus I have NEVER seen a character so misunderstood in my LIFE bro. Everyone makes him out to be this crazy hard dom daddy who’s emotionally unavailable and lowkey a lil abusive and it’s just like… did we play the same game.

Like Sylus is definitely intimidating and he’s strong and powerful and he puts up this scary front… but he’s so fucking soft and sweet. I could see those earlier behaviors in young Sylus MAYBE, but current Sylus? That man is asking you how highly when you tell him to jump. Not only the MC though, he is so caring and sweet to the twins and to mephisto and EVERY FUCKING CAT HE SEES.

He’s stupidly goofy and makes dumb jokes and makes an ass out of himself sometimes and he’s able to laugh about it. He loves Karaoke so much he has a whole like area dedicated to it like… he’s a dumbass how are we not seeing how goofy he is. He’s got a tough exterior that breaks so fast for the people he cares for.

I don’t even LIKE Sylus that much but like do we all have pussy juice in our eyes blinding up from reading the story?

He is gentle and soft and sure maybe a little obsessive, but he listens to boundaries and understands reason. I feel like fandom Sylus and Cannon Sylus are so separate from each other that fandom Sylus can hardly be recognized as Cannon Sylus.

there's something noticed by laumy on tiktok - very interesting detail in tbhx between Nice and Lin Ling fighting styles. 

Nice used mostly his fists, he was very concrete in his fighting style. It wasn't really dynamic - he was just flying and throwing punches.

Lin Ling, on the other hand, uses mostly his legs. He's very dynamic in his fighting style, almost as if he was dancing.

We know that og Nice used to dance. From his character pv we also know that he did ballet, which was something that Lin Ling also had to train because of that. And yet, it's not og Nice who used fluid and almost dancing moves in his fighting style - it's Lin Ling. 

When Wreck says it's not Nice's punch he not only means it metaphorically - because he loves Nice - he means it also literally. Because their punches ARE different. Even though Lin Ling and Nice are supposed to be the same, they fight differently.

This was supposed to be a yaoi ship post, but then I noticed Xia Qing’s lukewarm reaction and my thoughts diverged...

Is Xia Qing not happy for Yang Cheng? Or does she think that Yang Cheng shouldn’t be using E-Soul’s title?

She did say this later:

It seems Xia Qing and Shang Chao have different ideas on what kind of hero Yang Cheng should be. Perhaps Xia Qing is worried about Yang Cheng losing himself to the E-Soul name, but Shang Chao thinks differently.

To Shang Chao, there is no difference between Yang Cheng and “E-Soul.”

Yang Cheng is E-Soul, and E-Soul is Yang Cheng.

With or without a mask, Yang Cheng is still the same person. It’s like how one person has different aspects to himself. You just get to see their different sides at different times.

But Xia Qing thinks differently:

To Xia Qing, Yang Cheng can only be one or the other. He cannot be both Yang Cheng and E-Soul.

Xia Qing’s and Shang Chao’s contrasting beliefs are really interesting. I wonder which kind of belief will be portrayed as the “right” one? Should heroes be separate from their civilian self? Or should a hero also be a human first?

Previously, I talked about Shang Chao’s and Xia Qing’s contrasting ideologies on what kind of hero Yang Cheng should be. Gist of that post is that to Xia Qing, Yang Cheng and E-Soul are different people. But to Shang Chao, there is no difference between them; Yang Cheng is E-Soul and vice versa.

So isn’t it just interesting that on the night Yang Cheng became a hero, Xia Qing—despite actually already knowing that it was Yang Cheng under the mask, as revealed in Episode 6—she called out the name E-Soul instead. Meanwhile, Shang Chao, who has only just learned the truth, called Yang Cheng by his real name with no hesitation.

It’s small moments like these that really convince me that Shang Chao is the right person for Yang Cheng. He’s just so naturally in sync with what Yang Cheng needs, and at that moment, Yang Cheng needed acknowledgement of himself as a person. Sure, he just did some superhero stuff, but the name Xiao Youzi called out back then was still E-Soul. That Trust point may have given him the boost to defeat his enemies, but it didn’t really do much to raise his self-esteem.

It’s just like that time he got asked out by Xia Qing while in his E-Soul costume. He also didn’t feel good about that:

So Shang Chao’s presence at the end of Episode 6 was very timely.

On the night Yang Cheng became a hero, the first person to call him by his real name and acknowledge that it was him, Yang Cheng the person, who did all those stuff, was Shang Chao.

Not the kid he saved. Not the girl he’s always had a crush on. But Shang Chao.

And what’s more affirming than being personally acknowledged by someone whom you think is superior than you in every way?

Xia Qing is nice, but she pays too much attention to Yang Cheng’s weaknesses instead of his strengths, and that doesn’t really help our Yang Cheng, who already has low self-esteem. Pity is the last thing he wants from her.

Shang Chao is different. At this point, he doesn’t know much about Yang Cheng. He only sees the diamond in the rough, while the people closer to Yang Cheng are being too careful with the dirt around it. But Yang Cheng doesn’t need to be reminded of the dirt; he knows that himself all too well. What he needs is to be made aware of the diamond within him. Shang Chao’s verbal encouragement and proactive support help with that.

This becomes clearer as Yang Cheng starts cooperating with Shang Chao:

Xia Qing is a realist who will point out the cons, while Shang Chao charges ahead optimistically in spite of the difficulties. His wealth and privilege allows him to do so, and by extension, it also gives Yang Cheng the resources he needs to give things a try. But more importantly, it also gives him the courage to dream:

Before he started working with Shang Chao, Yang Cheng didn’t even have any plans for the future:

But Shang Chao took him by the hand and opened his eyes to what he is capable of:

He gives him concrete steps on how he can act like a hero.

And also outlines a clear future for Yang Cheng.

At surface level, it may seem like Shang Chao is just imposing what he wants on Yang Cheng, but I don’t think that’s the case.

Yang Cheng had zero trust points his whole life. Nobody really expected anything from him. So Shang Chao clearly stating what he wants from him and fully believing that he can do it, although new and confusing, should be not unpleasant.

Because at last there’s someone who believes in him. Someone who isn’t just a random number on his wrist. Someone who actually sees him and supports him every step of the way with concrete actions.

Shang Chao is exactly the person Yang Cheng needs.

The Straight-Gay Misdirections in TBHX Episode 6

I finally watched ep6, and I was so right about Shang Chao. He really is just gay for Yang Cheng. Yang Cheng may have had a little crush on Xia Qing, but it was Shang Chao, who has been enthusiastically supporting him, whom he actually fell for...

But since this is a Chinese show, they can’t outright say he’s in love with a man. They can only subtly hint at it.

At this moment, I thought we were gonna have a straight date scene between Yang Cheng and Xia Qing, but then the show cut that off and instead showed us something more intimate between Shang Chao and Yang Cheng:

This scene looks like the boss is trying to match Yang Chao and Shang Cheng together, so his interruption in the earlier “date” with Xia Qing now seems deliberate.

Yang Cheng here looks like a guy feeling nervous on his first date 😂

The scene being set at night and with only the two of them around also makes it more romantic compared to the morning “date” that was interrupted by so many kids flocking the store

Another misdirection was this scene:

Oh no, the “love rival” has a surprise for the “love interest”! What will our Yang Cheng do?

Oops, false alarm! The surprise is actually for Yang Cheng.

All this time, it was always just Yang Cheng for Shang Chao.

And now this is what Shang Chao looks like in Yang Cheng’s eyes:

He looks so warm and bright and loved.

Yang Cheng’s earlier discomfort when Xia Qing mentioned that “Shang Chao asked her out” can now be interpreted as Yang Cheng actually being jealous of Xia Qing. He was uncomfortable because the man he loved had asked a girl out, but then felt relieved when it turned out to be just a misunderstanding.

More proof that Yang Cheng has fallen in love with Shang Chao...

When he saw only Xia Qing in the room, his reaction was just of normal surprise

He then asked where Shang Chao is… which is still normal. After all, they’re friends now.

But then Shang Chao finally arrived...

and Yang Cheng looks so so happy.

With Xia Qing, he was only surprised. But with Shang Chao, he was elated.

But the most convincing evidence of all was Yang Cheng and Xia Qing’s conversation at the end:

Things have been going well between the two of them, so why so serious?

Because Xia Qing has caught on to Yang Cheng’s feelings for Shang Chao. She sees him slowly falling in love with Shang Chao, while Yang Cheng still doesn’t know how to face it.

It’s true that Yang Cheng had feelings for Xia Qing before, and it’s also true that he still cares for her now. He can also see how much Xia Qing cares for him.

But these just make it all the more difficult for Yang Cheng to face his true feelings.

He feels guilty for Xia Qing

yet at the same, he can’t take his eyes off Shang Chao

And that’s why Shang Chao had to die. Because every hero love interest in this show has be to killed off by the narrative—gunshots

The Romance Spot

And yet, it was Xia Qing who was shown inviting Yang Cheng over to that spot:

What’s also interesting is that right before this scene we have this:

Yan Shu (Rock) no longer looks as enthusiastic/supportive of this date, even though he was the one who suggested it to Yang Cheng. And since when was “love level” code for sugar level? And answering “half” (or 50%) for “love level” in a scene that’s supposed to be the first date? That doesn’t sound right.

Yang Cheng also didn’t end up confessing to Xia Qing despite being in the perfect spot for it. Instead, he was busy looking at his phone:

The typical straight scene of a guy ignoring his lover during their date. If Yang Cheng really loves Xia Qing, shouldn’t he be paying attention to her? They’re in the romance spot!

The only actual “confession” we got is this:

But I believe this is just a lie made by Xia Qing in order to spur Yang Cheng into making a move on her, because right afterward she says this:

She clearly wants to hear Yang Cheng confess to her, but Yang Cheng...

...says he has nothing to say 🤨

In contrast to the “date” with Xia Qing, we have these:

Yan Shu is “matchmaking” Yang Cheng with Shang Chao, looking more enthusiastic than he was during the Xia Qing date.

Yang Cheng is also reacting like how a normal person with a crush on someone would react on a first date. He looks shy and lowkey complaining to Yan Shu for “teasing” him 🤭

And why is he looking so shy with his “bro”? Yang Cheng, I know what you are...

His attention is now fully on Shang Chao. He even asks him what he wants to drink instead of just deciding it by himself, as he did with the Xia Qing date.

But alas, we never got to see Shang Chao sit in the romance spot. We can infer that he did sit there off-screen, but it could be that they chose not to show it to send out the message that Yang Cheng’s love for him is unrequited. Or, it could just be foreshadowing for the doomed yaoi 😔

Anyways, in conclusion, Xia Qing loves Yang Cheng (she enthusiastically invites him to the romance spot), Yang Cheng thinks he loves Xia Qing (he sits at the romance spot yet doesn’t pay attention to her), Yang Cheng actually loves Shang Chao (all eyes on him while he sits in the romance spot), while Shang Chao is just here for a good time (he is never shown sitting there).
