Rio. My Sri Lanka rescue dog. Also known as plant killer.
I'd been considering adopting another dog when I saw a photo of a tiny little puppy who had just been abandoned in a temple in Sri Lanka. I messaged the company and asked if it was possible to adopt her. She reminded me so much of my childhood dog with her spotted little legs. They said yes!! So we began the veryyyy long process. They covered all vet costs including spay and helped me raise money for her flight which ended up being around 2k.
She came home in November 2020. She's the sweetest out of all my dogs. She actually likes to cuddle and give me kisses while I have to hold the others hostage when I want cuddles.
She loves water and thankfully we have a large backyard because she loves running around like a maniac. And likes to destroy plants🙄😑

I started brushing Harlow’s teeth very early on. As a puppy, she would wiggle away from me and refuse her teeth being brushed. Back then, I had purchased a dog specific toothpaste that was beef flavored which they do to entice the dogs. She wouldn’t even give in to that. One day as I was looking something up online I came across an article that stated the different meanings of color strips on your toothpaste bottle. Blue indicates that it’s natural with medicine. Green indicates that it’s all natural. Red is natural plus some chemicals. Black..which was the color of Harlow’s...indicates that it’s all chemicals. Black = All chemical!
I quickly threw that out and started my research. I found some articles and people claiming to use Coconut Oil as a toothpaste and also, coconut oil has so many beneficial properties for everything. Odds are if you have a problem, coconut oil is the solution. Which was convenient for me because Harlow already had coconut oil at hand. If not, Trader Joe’s sells it for like $4.99!
So what I did is, I put some coconut oil in a different container and added a few drops of Spearmint essential oil. If you find it easier to melt the coconut oil to distribute the Spearmint better, do so. I did.
Harlow loves her coconut oil toothpaste. She’s not the biggest fan of brushing but she’ll put up with it because she thinks the coconut oil is the treat.
If you haven’t tried it already, give it a try and let me know how it goes for you!
Harlow’s Toothpaste Recipe
Coconut Oil
Spearmint Essential Oil
Put the coconut oil in a small mason jar, melt it and add 2 to 3 drops of coconut oil. Mix it all together and let it harden once again.
Happy Brushing!
