Paul Laurence Dunbar (poem) and Maya Angelou (autobiography), wrote their pieces separately; however, they will forever be intertwined. Folks often mixup the titles and works. Dunbar’s poem, “Sympathy”—published in 1899, is often referred to as “Caged Bird”. Maya Angelou, after reading “Sympathy”, years before writing her novel—connected with the “caged bird”, and its symbolism. So much so, that she took a line from Dunbar’s “Sympathy”, and entitled her autobiography: “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, published in 1969. As shared before, I know what it feels like to either lose—or, not have a voice. I’ll never, ever allow anyone to squeeze me into a place where I am mute—voiceless. I will walk away 👣👣👣👣👣 #ExitStageLeft #LevelUp, before I allow people, placed, or things to squelch my voice. Folks fought too hard for me to have one: one on a cross; and, others in the “movement”. #MotherMaya #MayaAngelou Margueritte (Maya Angelou) has been a favorite of mine, since childhood. She is one of the primary reasons that I’m a writer, today. I connected with her “voice” and heard her, as I related and appreciated her story. Upon reading, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, I was forever enveloped by her words. The authenticity in her word-choice, and emotion and passion evoked—often left me in deep thought , visualizing—even reliving the events. Unbeknownst to her, ours was a special bond: Like young Maya, I was speechless/voiceless for a period of my childhood. For both of us, it was a self-imposed action. For young Maya, it was abuse and a succeeding horror she witnessed; and, for me—it was self-protection due to a disability. So, when I read that she didn’t/couldn’t talk, and just read voraciously and escaped—-“that’s me,” I thought. “Same!” Like Maya, reading and a caring educator—educators (plural), pulled me out of my shell. Then, the shell became a shield. ...and, the shield became a pen. 😉 When Maya Angelou was chosen as the Inaugural poet, and presented “On the Pulse of Morning” at the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton, Jan. 20, 1993. I was proud of my “friend”. She overcame may obstacles, and was now speaking to an entire nation—eagerly awaiting her words. Sometimes, yes sometimes... your trial, becomes your tribulation. I remember having read INVISIBLE MAN, by Ralph Ellison, (NOT The Invisible Man) in high school—with Mr. Ralph Remiss (AP Lit) at Miami Edison Senior High; then discussing it in college at UM, with Mr. Wellington B. Johnson (African American Studies)—one of the best and my favorite instructors, by far. I was intellectually transformed, by the experiences. My entire worldview was interrupted. I went on to select its inclusion in my AP summer reading list (MLEC), along with the other European and Caribbean staple/canon reads. If you read Dostoyevsky’s “Notes From the Underground”, you’ll enjoy the dialogue and development in Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison—who adds yet another layer of “invisibility”. Each time I read “Invisible Man”, or reviewed it, I gained new insight and understanding. It’s because each time I was a bit older, and hand more experiences to connect or relate in context. It still “speaks” to me—and, apparently my students. I remember one student who after reading “invisible Man”, said, “I can relate to this. This is me. People try not to look at me, or look pass me. Others prejudge me.” You see, he was “the darker brother” and wore his hair in locs, at the time. He was a strong and confident young man. Yet, he held the pain of being “invisible” to some folks. He taught me something. What we do affects kids so much, that we damn well better be intentional and careful. They see and watch us—and how we handle things. As an instructor, I made it my business to be intentional, careful, and caring. My students were never invisible in my care—in my class. That student and I had a discussion, after school. I encouraged him to persevere and hold strong. Just know, he went on to do great things—beyond my vision. He’s no longer invisible. They see him, now. 😉 ...but, now it’s “When They See Us.
