This poem represents anxiety through the perspective of someone going through treatment. On one hand they know what life would be like if they were completely reasonable-- the language is simple and easy to read and very calm. On the other side, there is unreason which is full of dark language, minimal punctuation for a quick and stressful read. When read together we can see the fight between reason and unreason and how that can make someone with anxiety feel.

SPOILER ALERT:
Perks of Being a Wallflower focuses on the main character Charlie, who is battling with anxiety and depression after a series of tragic events in his life. He is too scared to speak up in class during his first few weeks in high school, and once he makes friends he does anything he can to keep them, from getting into fights to letting them kiss him as a type of catharsis. When he looses those friends (at least briefly) he begins having panic attacks, becomes severely depressed and even ends up in the hospital. This book is not only queer in the way it addresses anxiety, but also in the way that it addresses sexuality as well.

Do you have any tips for anxiety?
yea!1. find out what is triggering the anxiety. is it the lack of control? too many people? too little space? deadlines? find it and acknowledge it.2. write down your thoughts about what is making you anxious. then go back and reflect on it. is it rational? how likely is it actually going to happen? if you find yourself making excuses or silly reasons to justify your feelings, counter them too3. if you are in public, close your eyes. focus on one thing. it could be your breathing. in for 4 counts, out for 7.4. if breathing doesn’t help, focus on a different thing. the way your shirt feels between your fingers or the leaves swaying in the wind. direct all attention to the thing.5. listen to music. bring headphones and have a playlist ready to go.6. facing the thing. the small bits of exposure will help. just take baby steps.7. repeat this: this is just a feeling of panic. this will pass shortly. I will be okay. soon this will be over and I will get back on track to doing what I was doing. I have control. these thoughts are irrational.8. have a video/gif/art piece that helps calm you down. I recommend “tinywoman” on ig and “i still love him” by stef senjati on youtube9. watch this video (when your not panicking or anxious) https://youtu.be/iOXg9g-iyiY
hope this helps!!

TIPS
So instead of reading shitty imagines that supposedly “help” you all with your anxiety and depression, let me give you my tips.
–ANXIETY– • place your hand on your chest, inhale deeply, hold it for five slow seconds, and exhale slowly. Repeat as needed.
•repeat these words, “it’s not me, it’s what’s around me,” to yourself over and over.
• download “SAM”; it’s an app that’s designed to help you with your anxiety and it’s wonderful. Plus, it’s free!
• take a shower, put the water to your desired temperature, and close your eyes, sit down, relax, and let the water hit you.
• drink cold water during the attack and help yourself calm down.
•control your breathing. It’s very important. If you have to, look at yourself in the mirror and watch your hand on your chest rise up and down.
–DEPRESSION–
•watch a movie or show. (I suggest watching Disney films, Juno, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Easy A, Mean Girls… Anything to make you laugh, really.)
•read a book; reading has always helped me
•paint! Draw! Go outside! Look at flowers and the pretty trees! Look how everything moves in the wind!
• listen to music, take a nap and wake up and take a nice shower!
•write out what you’re feeling, read it again, rip it up to little shreds or burn it.
–SUICIDAL THOUGHTS–
•imagine yourself with a child, a family, everything right in the future.
•read a book; paint; listen to music.
•repeat these words, “it’s not me, it’s what’s around me,” and, “everything will fall into place.”
You all need to realize that there is so much more out there. Don’t forget that I was (somewhat currently) on suicide watch. I go through the and things you guys are going through. Things got good for me. I want to help you all, as well.

Some speculate that Winnie the Pooh characters all represent different mental illnesses. While I don’t agree with all of them, I do think that Piglet has generalized anxiety, as he is always worried and fearful of everything, even his own literal shadow. He also shows visual signs of anxiety, such as hand wringing and shaking.

Fangirl represents anxiety best through the lens of its main character Cath. Cath has almost crippling social anxiety, although it is only really discussed in the first half of the book (a real shortcoming of the novel). She struggles to make friends because she is afraid of what the world might think of her. So far in life she has only been with her twin sister Wren, who is much more social and outgoing than Cath. Over the first half of the book she only makes two friends, one being her roommate and the other being her roommates ex. She spends her time obsessively worrying about her dad, and about her writing, and about being seperated from her sister. The first half of the book allows the readers to see generalized anxiety in a unique perspective of a young teenage girl.

Reagan: It's just anxiety, Cath. Why don't you tell your anxiety, "Hey there, anxiety, I'm not going to let you rule me."
Cath: Because my anxiety doesn't give a flying fuck!

Inside Out overall is such a great representation for mental health in children’s films, honestly phenomenal. The character Fear represents the flighty, panicky response that many people experience when they have fear. However, anxiety is what a person would have when Fear is in control all the time (the way that joy is in control in Riley’s head). At that point, you feel fear and panic all the time, even when nothing is happening, and that is what it’s like to have anxiety.

This book is an excellent example of anxiety because we can watch characters such as Jude and Noah slowly develop anxiety over the course of the book as they try to figure out the world after their mothers death. It is also anxiety inducing for the reader as more and more loose strings are eventually connected, quickening the pace of the book until the climax.

“I love you,” I say to him, only it comes out, “Hey.” “So damn much,” he says back, only it comes out, “Dude.”
