God, THIS. SPN used to be weird and wild and okay, sure, we still fought with each other but we proudly provided one of the impetuses for the advent of AO3, the genesis of A/B/O (aka Omega'verse), and the best effin' kink memes in town. Then for some gaudy awful reason, people lost their damned fool minds and forgot media literacy. Shipping the "right" ship became a badge of honor and winning a ship war, SERIOUS BUSINESS. Passing judgment on people as though what they shipped was some sort of indictment of IRL behavior, all nuance chucked out the window, forgetting what "fiction" meant... egads. In some part, I blame the mainstreaming and commodification of fandom. But I also think the way social and political friction has polarized people (most especially in the US and on social media) holds a major responsibility. You keep writing and arting, you crazy boundary-pushers. You monster f*ckers, you iddy geniuses. Keep being naughty and brilliant.
