late night ramblings

It’s late and here’s some life thoughts/updates

This year I met and grew very close to one girl who was doing conventions during the span of one weekend. Her thoughts about long-term conventions and her hard work of 50 conventions a year through proxies made me realize I never wanted this life that much or long-term. I never though about life too long term before because of suicidal thoughts. But now I’m going to try having a long-term job. 

Honestly that scares me more than the fluctuations in conventions. I’ve always looked at stability, normalcy, and the 9-5 grind quite lowly. Even more, I’ve always wanted to avoid the tech life since I am in the silicon valley. I worry about it changing me. As it changed those around me. Even my best friend who desperately tries to run from this by living in different countries and fear the same things, doesn’t see how much she has settled into this life the last two years.

But gonna give this a try. And that requires effort for something I don’t know if I have the passion for. Especially connecting with people... I get so quite when people talk about normal things, the daily life things. I need to be able to find the interesting things in people and dig it out fast or else I lose interest in even trying. It’s really bad but I wish I could talk about anime and video games to network developers or social engineers. But I have a hard time.

Realizing this, having anime expo be over, I feel a subtle click in the back of my head to not work as hard on artwork now. A small break before my 3 months of bootcamp hell to delve and get jobs in this industry. As the conventions still continue to roll around, the money not earned doesn’t bother me anymore. I am yearning for some connection with someone. Sometimes I wish customers I meet and have conversations with at cons would DM me and talk to me. Because you guys are really cool and sometimes make my day. But those never come... I’m an awkward turtle on social media.

Hopefully this time next year, I will have my full time job with health insurance. I can still go to 1-4 conventions a year to see my artist friends. I will somehow make the time to start streaming video games, post up my webcomics, and be more happy with my original art. Maybe even swim with some whale sharks :)

Copyright law is about to change 

For more than a year Congress has been holding hearings for the drafting of a brand new US Copyright Act. At its heart is the return of Orphan Works

What does this mean for artists? it means it will make it easier for infringers to steal artists works and harder for people who are making or trying to make a living out of art more difficult. This will effect every artist and all the artwork they have created, are creating, and will be created. Corporates, Big businesses, and publishers want this to pass to make money out off artists works without paying us artists for past, current, and future artwork. 

Basic Facts About The Law Being Proposed

 - “The Next Great Copyright Act” would replace all existing copyright law. 

 - It would void our Constitutional right to the exclusive control of our work.

 - It would “privilege” the public’s right to use our work.

   - It would “pressure” you to register your work with commercial registries.

   - It would “orphan” unregistered work.

   - It would make orphaned work available for commercial infringement by “good faith” infringers. 

 - It would allow others to alter your work and copyright these “derivative works” in their own names. 

 - It would affect all visual art: drawings, paintings, sketches, photos, etc.; past, present and future; published and unpublished; domestic and foreign.
