“Master,” you bow before entering the room. “Mistress Baal requests for your presence. Shouko is busy dealing–”

The young master clenches the chips in his palm. “What did you call her?”

He slowly turns around and you still upon gazing into his eyes. Your ability to recognise the slightest shift in Scaramouche’s unpredictable mood is a skill you hold great pride in. But anyone could see the storm rising in that hypnotic indigo ocean.

“Oh, forgive me for my presumptuousness,” you quickly dial back on your words. “I have been busy assisting the Lady these past week. I seem to have become accustomed to addressing her in such an informal manner.”

He blinks, his expression changing to one of confusion then to suspicion. “She allows you to address her by name?”

“Yes? And no?” You laugh, deciding to drop the politeness. “She said I was allowed to call her ‘Shouko’ during the duration of a gamble we had but I got too used to it so sometimes it still slips out. I’ll break the habit soon, don’t worry! I’ll make sure I don’t say it in front of other students.”

“Pfff, I don’t care about that.” Scaramouche rolls his eyes, placing his chips on the table. His steps are heavier than usual, eyebrows furrowing ever so slightly as he latches onto your wrist and squeezes it. “You know what I do care about? Let me think…oh yes! Maybe, when my childhood friend suddenly addresses my sister by her name when you don’t even call me by my name anymore.”

Oh, that’s what it is? Your lips curl as you open your mouth to explain yourself but he didn’t give you an opportunity to do so. In a second, you hear the door slam behind you and suddenly, your back is against its wooden frame. He leans in close to you, caging you with his arms on either side of your head.

“Have you become that close to her in a week?” His warm breath tickles your face.

“N-no Master, it’s…” Your voice cracks so you swallow before trying again. “Master, it’s really just–”

He hushes you, grabbing your chin and rubbing his thumb against your bottom lip. “You know…I really, really don’t like that. I don’t like that at all.”

His electrifying gaze punctures through you, the sharpness further accentuated by his seemingly disappointed yet bored expression. His eyes acutely observe you, observing your every movement from the way you shrink under him to the way you tug on your uniform. You feel like you can’t even breathe.

“You know, I also gave you permission to address me by my given name when we’re alone,” he whispers into your ear. “And that was a long time ago. Much longer than that when you had that bet with her.”

“Yes, I do remember that.” You flash a bittersweet smile. “But that was when we were kids. Your mother once told me I needed to be more professional. Now I guess I have become used to addressing you by your title.”

He raises an eyebrow. “And yet you call my sister by her first name.”

You stay silent.

“Say it. Say my name.”

Your mouth opens in an attempt to fulfil his request but you immediately close it. It sounds so simple, and it is. If it was you in the past, you would have easily fulfilled it, maybe even donning a proud grin as you cross your arms. But a request that once was just part of your daily life, something that was natural and easy to you, became a high hurdle as a result of work and time.

“Master…Mistress Baal–”

Your breath hitches as he further lessens the distance between the both of you. “You’re not escaping this. I won’t let you go until you say my name.”

It is as if all the moisture in your mouth evaporated. It feels like it takes significant effort to gulp down your spit. Looking into his eyes, much less his face has become an impossible task. But you still feel his gaze piercing through your skull. He is waiting. Lady Baal is waiting as well and he’s not leaving the room until you do what he asks.

“Ku…”

Scaramouche lifts your face, forcing you to look into his eyes. “Ku?”

“Ku…” Your lip trembles as you exert all your willpower to whisper his name. “Ku-Kunihiko…”

“Hmm, good pet.” He smiles at your obedience. “Say it again for me.”

“Kunihiko...”

“Again.”

“Kunihiko.”

“More.”

You shut your eyes as his lips brush against yours. Your quivering hands make their way to his suit vest, clinging onto it as you melt into the kiss. Now that you think about it, it’s laughable how you two have done this millions of times yet saying his name sounds so strange to you. He tries to deepen the kiss but your heart races upon remembering what you came here for.

Knock, knock

“Master Kunikuzushi, [Name]? Mistress Baal is waiting for the two of you,”

Scaramouche clicks his tongue and you can tell he is about to curse at the maid before you quickly place your palm over his mouth.

“Our sincerest apologies for the delay. We’ll be there soon,” You turn back to your master upon hearing footsteps getting further and further away. “Mas– I mean, Kuni, we shouldn’t keep your mother waiting.”

“Fine,” he sighs, rolling his eyes.

He finally gives you space, allowing you to breathe once more.

“But…” He smirks, planting a kiss on your forehead before patting your head. “We’ll be continuing this later, understood?”
