Should I be even writing this ? Not sure. But I felt like I should probably give my unwanted 2 cents on this matter regarding JTBC's upcoming drama Snowdrop.

After reading many tweets and posts written by the Koreans and them suggesting that international fans should watch the movies based on South Korea's democratization like 1987: When The Day Comes, I have taken the liberty to watch two out of the four movies on this topic- 1987: When The Day Comes and A Taxi Driver. I have yet to catch up with The Attorney and The Man Standing Next. Besides this I have done some reading on this subject too. And here's what I have to say -

1. International fans, we need a better understanding of the importance of this event which is the backdrop of Snowdrop. I keep seeing the year 1987 in most of the synopsis. So needless to say it's an important year in the Korean history.

2. Please don't invalidate their feelings regarding this situation. The events of 1987 are very much real. I had a hard time processing after watching the movie. It was downright heartbreaking. Reading up on it doesn't make it any easier. And I'm just an international kdrama fan. The natives have a right to be hurt if their history is being distorted or the wrong things are romanticised that has caused pain to a lot of people.

3. International fans of the actors are in no way entitled to talk over the people of a country who are clearly hurt by this. If you don't know the history, there's no harm in educating yourself about it. Imagine yourself in their shoes and then comment about it.

4. JTBC should give a clear explanation surrounding the plot. If it is what people are agitated about, then it's better they change the plot. There's no way this will pass if they keep pushing this same plot and not end up in a ditch like Joseon Exorcist did. They actors of Joseon Exorcist had to apologize. They were called out and criticized for taking up this drama. I'm sure none of us wish that upon the cast and crew of Snowdrop.

Until then, let us just wait and see what happens because the petition to stop the filming of Snowdrop has 96k signatures on it.
