There’s more I could say on this but not without spoiling past the prologue, so instead I’ll say that while yes the prologue does put a woman in a fridge, I think a lesser story would introduce Sophie as nothing more than Gustave’s love interest that follows you around for cheap emotional investment and then immediately kill her. An object to instill an emotion in you instead of a person, which is what “fridging” typically is.

Instead you’re forced to play as her for the thirty-forty minutes it takes for her to walk to her death knowing full-well it is coming, and the writing succeeds in fleshing her out and giving her a lot of conviction, dimension and background. She feels like a whole person experiencing a whole range of emotion. This translates to instead of just being sad that she died because she was Gustave’s love interest, you’re hit with the tragedy of the totality of the life that is lost with the Gommage. She feels like a main character that is quickly ripped away from you because you are forced to live life in her shoes. Your empathy is with her first, and Gustave second.

For perspective, all of Expedition 33 and its characters was written by a woman, so perhaps this is why.

the lack of expedition 33 following on tumblr considering what it is and its popularity and the overwhelmingly positive reception it’s getting across the board is a bit jarring i must say. Legitimately very odd that fandom culture isn’t eating this shit up on here
