Height comparison, Ranger edition

Halt is the shortest, and we love him for it

Will is a smidgen taller than Halt (about a centimeter)

Maddie is about a centimeter taller than Will on a good day

Crowley is about an inch (~2.5 cm) taller than Will

Gilan is fiVE INCHES taller than Crowley because his defining personality trait is his height

Bonus: Alyss is taller than Will for sure, possibly taller than Crowley, because AMAB people tend to be taller and now she can tell transphobes that she is more woman than they will ever be

Halt Has A Cat And Teaches Will Hibernian

This one’s by @rangerthursday11, @banannawrites, and gerbilfriend on ao3! Halt has a cat!!!

He found it one day, and he didn’t mean to adopt it, really, but it just kept showing up and at some point it just became his. There’s a little cat bed, made out of an old cloak, and a chipped water bowl.

Now, it could be named Pritchard, but also, consider this: the cat is named Cat, short for Caitlyn. 

The cat likes to wrap itself around Halt’s neck, sit in his lap, and plop itself down on his paperwork. Halt likes to use this as an excuse- “Sorry my paperwork was late, Cat was sitting on it.” Or even: “I don’t care, Crowley, I am not moving the cat.” 

The cat sleeps in his bed with him, and Crowley sees Halt let it bat his oakleaf around. Halt adamantly says that did Not happen, No Sir. The cat has a rivalry with Crowley. Cat brings Halt mice sometimes, and he’s very proud of his little hunter. 

Will makes a little double-scabbard collar for it. Halt adores his cat, and anyone who makes fun of him for it can die. He gives Cat a Hibernian nickname, a term of endearment he used to use for Caitlyn.

Will’s absolutely confused by it, and Halt has to teach him the pronunciation of the word.

After that, Will asks to learn more Hibernian, and he expects to be denied, but Halt patiently teaches him. Halt’s honestly touched by the fact that Will asked. 

Eventually, Will realizes that the name Halt keeps calling him is ‘son’ in Hibernian. (The first time this happens is after the boar hunt in book one- it’s an accident, and Halt tries to stop it at first, but eventually gives up.)

Will asks someone else who knows Hibernian (Pauline) to teach him the word ‘father.’

He, one day, casually calls Halt that, and Halt responds without really noticing. 

Fifteen minutes later, he realizes, spitting out his beloved coffee.

When Halt and Will are feeling especially soft, that’s how they address each other. It becomes a Thing.

Sometimes, Will gets sick, and Halt will sing old Hibernian lullabies to him. Hibernian becomes a comfort language to him- when Will’s upset, Halt will talk softly to him in Hibernian.

Maybe apprentice Will gets hurt sometime. It’s not fatal, but it’s pretty bad. 

He’s in the Redmont infirmary and Halt’s sitting next to him while he sleeps, just quietly talking in Hibernian, brushing the hair out of his face and smoothing the pain lines away. 

Arald and Rodney see them, get just a tiny glimpse of the trust between them.

Halt and Will speak Hibernian around Redmont, with Will pointing at things and Halt teaching him how to say them. The other Craftmasters are awed, except for Pauline, who probably knows Hibernian. (She definitely knows that Halt and Will refer to each other as father and son.)

Anyways, that’s that on that! A little fliuffy one as an apology for the Jesper angst from last time.

Jesper Angst

Jesper: but with more Character Depth And Trauma.

Jesper’s biological parents are dead, and so he lives with his stepfather. However, his home life isn’t exactly great- more specifically, his stepfather curses him out, beats him, locks him out of the house or in the basement for days, and has drunken rages.

This is why, in The Ghostfaces, Jesper steps out of line and breaks formation to run for water. It’s just too similar to what his stepfather used to do, to how he used to be stuck in the basement with no food and water for ages.

He’s only seventeen when he gets into a huge fight with his stepdad. The man is angry and yelling and Jesper is scared out of his wits.

His stepfather pulls out a knife and in an instant, Jesper knows that he’s going to get killed or maimed for life and he panics, red-hot adrenaline flowing through his veins, heart racing, and his instincts kick in.

He knows how to fight, knows how to defend himself, and so he does, lashes back out at his stepfather.

The next thing he knows, his stepfather’s on the ground in front of him, a knife lodged in his stomach, and it’s Jesper’s bloody fingerprints that are on the handle.

And that’s when it hits him, all the guilt and the shame and the self-hatred. Jesper can’t have anyone finding out about this- can’t have anyone figuring it out. After all, patricide is one of the worst crimes you can commit in Skandia.

He buries his stepfather, hides the evidence, remembers the bits and pieces of their life together that weren’t terrible. It’s hard to sleep after that- haunted by the images of blood and death and blood-stained knife. He carries it with him, feels it weigh down and tear at his soul. He quietly waits for the day that his crimes will be found out, the day that his world will crumble from beneath his very feet.

Why don’t we kick it up a notch?

Thorn has always been a sort of father figure to the Herons. Maybe he’s a little hard on them, but he cares. 

Jesper knows that, of course he does, but maybe it’s a little hard to remember when Thorn is angry and shouting and up in his face and suddenly, he’s seventeen and his stepfather has him cornered again.

Maybe one day, Thorn goes too far and Jesper breaks, screams for Thorn to STOP, PLEASE, JUST STOP, yells that he can’t hurt Thorn too.

Maybe one day, Thorn dies on the battlefield in Jesper’s arms and Jesper is too late to save him, and the guilt of two deaths stay on his shoulders for the rest of his life.

Maybe one day, the Herons figure out what’s happened, what he’s gone through, and do their best to remove the weight from his soul.

Either way, Jesper has been entirely hurt, and the server is entirely unapologetic.

(Oh, and bonus points if Edvin knows about the abuse, being the healer and all.)

So! 

@aseikh‘s discord server (which I am a part of) decided that Gilan and Jenny’s romance was haphazardly thrown together because of heteronormativity and “every guy has to have a girlfriend.” Not to say Gilan/Jenny is a bad ship, but Flanagan… really did ‘em dirty. 

INSTEAD, we made Gilan a boyfriend- because Flanagan wouldn’t.
