Session: 03/31/21 - Digby Merril... Conclusion?
[claps hands together and takes a deep breath]
I know I still gotta finish the ‘brief’ summary of what’s happened in the campaign thus far, but tonight’s session was wild.
First I’m gonna provide a little context from previous sessions.
So Wyn, right? Changeling woman who’s been arrested for crimes she hasn’t committed, someone we’re trying to save because Jud and Maeve refuse to let someone innocent get executed and the rest of the party is invested in this now too.
Our last hope of saving her that we know of is a party being held at the residency she’s being kept at.
In an effort to find other ways to rescue her, we sought out a man named Digby Merril, that an ally in Azorius wants us to bring in.
We find him, but he’s being guarded by some Orzhov giants and isn’t being allowed to leave. His windows all have bars on them as well. He also does not match the description Penitent was looking for. So we go back into his room to figure out what we’re doing next...
Now join me as we wrap up the case of Digby Merril.
So early in, as we’re questioning Digby, Wax (our druid/sorcerer and beloved goblin son boy) manages to detect some magic on Digby using his detect magic glasses, and finds out that he’s under the effects of some kind of transmutation magic. He tells us this, and then asks Digby something along the lines of “Okay, if you’re not actually Digby, who are you?”
Digby responds with “OH THANK GOD.” and we’re immediately like “??? Wait hold on, what??”
So there’s a little bit of back and forth at first as both sides of the conversation to to feel out if the other side is trust-worthy or not, and then Digby finally tells us what his deal is.
His name is actually Emev, and he’s being... basically detained under a different name and with a different face because he found out that when Orzhov takes their collateral from members who join, they don’t just put your name on file or claim your body for physical labor.
They literally take your likeness and name (or whatever else) to use for their own purposes. Like Digby Merril is someone else’s name, but was being used on Emev, much like the appearance he was being forced to use currently.
Penitent, who willingly gave up her deadname (because she is trans) is unbothered by this. Judgment, who gave up her body under the impression it was just for physical labor or something, immediately tenses up and grows (internally) panicked as she realizes Orzhov probably has people running around with her face and likeness. She does not say this just yet, though.
Emez also explains that he was actually on his way to leave Orzhov and join a different guild to spread the truth about Orzhov, when he was caught, forced into his new identity, and then forced into custody.
So then we offer to break him out and bring him to Azorius where he can tell our Azorius ally all about what he knows about Orzhov.
And then we formulate and put our plan into action.
We all crowd near a window that isn’t in immediate sight of the giant guards, Wax uses heat metal to heat the bars up, Bon unlocks the glass window and opens it, and then Jud proceeds to smash the bars out. This WORKS, but the noise still garners the attention of one of the guards, so he starts stomping his way over.
Pardoner Sul and Maeve move into the way to try and distract the guards, and it... doesn’t quite work out, but that’s fine!
Jud lowers her 30 foot length of chain down the window and tries to rush Emez out first. He gets into the window to start climbing down, but the guard quickly sees what we’re doing, and we enter initiative.
Sul tries to aid through faerie fire, Maeve serves as a human shield by taking the brunt of the giant guards’ attacks (which are HORRIFYINGLY strong and almost take her out in one turn,,,) Wax pushes Emez out of the window and feather falls the two of them safely to the ground.
Bonnie had pretended to take Penitent hostage and also rushed out the window with her, the two of them landing less safely but still alive.
Maeve tries to urge Judgment out the window while she holds the line, but Jud insists that she will not leave without Maeve... and also motions to the chain wrapped around her waist and lowered out the window... and Sul still very clearly standing inside.
Maeve, unable to take any more hits, uses her echo to teleport beside Sul, lifts her into her arms, carries her to the window, action surges, and then dashes out of the window and uses her reaction to activate the feather fall orb she has.
Judgment takes a few heavy hits from the giants as they close in on her, but she holds steady thanks to her rage, and then scrambles and jumps out of the window.
Flipping the double bird and sticking her tongue out as she falls backward.

So with everyone safe outside, we flee and begin trying to lose the guards now looking for us in the city. We succeed!!
We later slow down to catch our bearings, Emez points out how rough Maeve looks, Maeve insists she’s fine, and then Jud tells her to shut up while shoving her last potion of greater healing into Maeve’s mouth, while slapping her with Healing Hands, as Sul aids with Healing Word, successfully getting Maeve almost completely up to full health. Penitent then tops her off with her celestial warlock magic.
Tumblr media
Judgment also takes this time to explain to the whole group that she also used to be a member of Orzhov (so now not just Maeve and Penny know), and that she gave the guild her body. She is visibly unhappy, but does not dwell on it as the group still needs to get Emez to Aris (our Azorius ally)
We eventually bring Emez to an Azzy station while Wax hangs back and gets us all boba tea, Aris is called to the station, we leave to go reunite with Wax and figure out our next course of action.
On our way back, Bonnie slows down and matches Jud’s walking speed, and once Jud acknowledges her presence, asks Judgment “So... Orzhov, huh?” and eventually Judgment says “Remember how I said I was engaged? Yeah... Orzhov took my fiancee from me.” Bonnie sympathizes and then shares with Judgment that she also used to be a member of Orzhov and that she burned her Orzhov contact before patting Jud on the arm and walking ahead.
The session ended with Judgment’s body language softening up as she watched Bon walk away, suddenly feeling even more of a kinship with the Rakdos changeling than she already did before.

If scars are makeup and paint Then thanks for setting me straight 'Cause I've been living a lie
If burning makes me a liar Then come join me in the fire I know you wouldn't survive But I'll be burning alive

some Grandeur, because I’m still hyped about him. He’s a backstory NPC attached to Jud, and one of the very few friends she ever had up until Maeve and her met The Hellions.
He’s got some juicy stuff going on with him that I shan't spoil just yet in case my tablemates find this place. <:3c I hope it ends up being fun for everyone, though. The very small interactions we’ve gotten have been so good, the DM’s doing my boy justice.....
also, Grandeur’s technically a stage name that he likes so much he prefers when people call him by it. So much so that he doesn’t give out his actual name, which is Bruno Haymaker.

I will type up part 2 another day x__x
I already missed some things in part 1, I also missed a lot of the gay overtones (Maeve and Jud pine after each other a lot but are terrified to act on their feelings for their own reasons, the girls all casually flirt with each other a lot in general ESPECIALLY to fluster Judgment), and I didn’t touch on the extreme level of protection Judgment feels toward Sul due to how sickly they are and how much they remind Jud of her dead fiancee
there is, so much orz

Let’s see if I can try summarizing this mess... part 1
There is a LOT that has happened already in the campaign, even without all the minute character interactions and internal dialogue/struggles, so this will be incredibly truncated...
First, here’s the party.
The Penitent One - Orzhov - celestial warlock - human - she/her Maeve Redtail - Boros - echo knight fighter - human - she/her Judgment Allfury - Boros - zealot barbarian - (fallen) aasimar - she/her Bonnie / Sprinkles - Rakdos - assassin rogue - “human” (changeling) - she/her (they) Sul - “Simic” (Dimir) - whispers bard / ashen wolf warlock - elf - she/they Wax - Gruul - druid/sorcerer - goblin - he/him (SON BOY ALLOWED)
- The party all met up for the first time while chasing some disembodied hands into the sewers, where they fought a necromancer together and then got arrested by the Azzies.
- First impressions were established, most of the party were wary of one-another but otherwise friendly. The only exception was the immediate hostility between Judgment (Boros) and Penitent (Orzhov).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Each member is assigned an assignment from their respective guilds to investigate an old manor. We learn about the Kingdom Of Mold, also there’s two vampires in an elf trenchcoat. Maeve and Jud’s target (a centaur named Gwoth) gets away. Maeve starts her search to get Gwoth back to the Legion.
- We investigate an Izzet tower next.
- There’s a plainswalker kobold that’s preaching about The Queen Of Storms and sacrificing people to her by throwing them off a tall tower. We stop and kill him. While there, we run into a changeling woman named Wyn who talks about corruption in the guilds. No one really takes her seriously, but we are otherwise nonhostile to one another.
- Maeve gets a promotion around here I think? Or soon?? Fuck it’s been so long. She also gets an assistant named Arnold to help with her paperwork, and her own room to herself.
- We eventually run into Elran, Vatu, and their ringleader Levin at a protest organized by guildless citizens where they try to incite violence. We stop them, and we quickly brand them as Absolute Assholes We Need To Kick The Asses Of Some Day.
- Jud opens up to Maeve about her experiences with Orzhov, her grief, and the fact she was once engaged, and why she struggles to trust Penitent even though Maeve asked her to. Maeve forces Jud to punch her, Jud refuses until Maeve gives her no choice, and then she starts wailing on her while bawling her eyes out until Maeve stops her.

... the aftermath of this carried over to when we all met up the next day
Tumblr media
- Wyn requests we meet up with her to talk. We agree to, she tells us more about guild corruption and then gets arrested right in front of us. We try to stop this, but to no avail.
- Laze is introduced around this point I think? He’s a fellow Boros legionnaire, but he hates Maeve and Judgment (and they in turn learn to hate him.)
- We eventually learn that Elran, Vatu, and Levin all have a hand in Wyn’s arrest (along with Laze, but) so we start investigating them. We start with Elran and end up getting sucked into a painting inside his house. We eventually drag him back to Maeve’s room and interrogate him. We also interrogate a talking book. Jud threatens to eat it. (It works.)
- We look for Vatu next, we also find Wyn’s adoptive parent figure.
My brain is mush, good lord...
- We snoop around for Vatu, Jud and Maeve sign up for a tournament. We enjoy a harvest festival, Jud’s stomach is apparently not only iron, but also hammerspace as she singlehandedly wins a pie eating contest and even eats the pies long after she wins and has to be forcefully pulled away from the table in her frenzy
Tumblr media
- A parade goes wrong, there’s undead everywhere, a kid gets kidnapped. We fight, most of us without armor and weapons, but some cool shit happens as a result of that and it was tense but REALLY cool. Also, Bon gets moonbeamed and we learn she’s a changeling. They flee and we give chase after we deal with the undead, make sure they’re okay, there’s some spicy words exchanged (’Bon’ lashed out in fear) causing the Boros gorls to leave in a huff, Penitent follows them to do damage control while Sul and Wax stay behind to console ‘Bon’. (Yan)
- We’re eventually given a job to go into The Parallel Grove (cursed woods) to rescue the girl who got kidnapped when the undead attacked. We go in, there’s spooky shit everywhere, but we triumph.
- Also a giant eldritch elk made of bones that look like coral almost killed Judgment. She took one of its otherworldly bones as a trophy and treasures it dearly.
Also 80% of the party try to gift the girl we rescued a knife each for her belated birthday. Also we may have been her gay awakening.

Judgment comes off as being uncaring and ruthless to most, but those who are familiar with her would know that she has a heart of gold that’s overflowing with empathy and compassion. She is troubled with guilt and grief, though she’s far too aloof to open up about this to most people.
She is prone to acting on bursts of thoughtless impulse and she can be reckless to the detriment of herself and others, much to her own shame.
Judgment’s Voice Claim: Wendy Kay Powel as Envy Judgement’s Singing Voice: Lzzy Hale of Halestorm
Judgment, formerly known as Edrei Williamson...
was the daughter of Rhialla and Richard Williamson
celestial heritage was passed down from her mother's side
Richard left seemingly without a word when Judgment was 8
Rhialla got deathly sick when Judgment was 19
In a desperate attempt to help her mother, Judgment turned to Orzhov for aid
Rhialla lost her fight against the illness and Judgment ended up in debt
Joined Orzhov to work off her debt, as an enforcer
was miserable the whole time, both from a growing bitterness and the grief of her mother's death, as well as a general unhappiness with how the Orzhov Syndicate operates itself around money.
ends up meeting a frail young woman by the name of Christine Walker who struggles to run a flower shop
falls for Christine and ends up sticking her neck out for her, as well as dipping into her own funds when possible to try and help Christine
Christine and Judgment eventually become a couple, they are both very sweet to one another
Judgment catches another enforcer harassing Christine and tries to intervene, a fight breaks out between her and the other enforcer
Christine is caught in the crossfire and ends up murdered by the other enforcer's hands. Judgment enters a grief-fueled rage and attempts to kill the other enforcer before other Orzhov members arrive at the scene. Attempts at restraining Judgment are made, but all fail. Eventually, Judgment manages to flee but not before leaving the building completely trashed and many of those present wounded.
Goes into hiding and is essentially homeless for a while.
finds and enters The Fang Pit, a secret arena popular among underground outcasts.
is offered protection from Orzhov by Grandeur, the "owner" of The Fang Pit, so long as Judgment can prove herself in his arena.
climbs her way to championship and slowly befriends Grandeur in the process.
finds an intense amount of catharsis in the arena, reveling in the bloodshed to the point of losing herself. (She officially “falls” as an aasimar.)
Grandeur eventually tries to open up to Judgment about his own problems involving his "boss" as he sees a lot of promise in her power, but things keep getting in the way
eventually meets Maeve while taking a small break from the arena and gets arrested alongside Maeve due to a fistfight that broke out between the two of them.
befriends Maeve while they're both being detained, and ends up getting bailed out by the Boros Legion at Maeve's request.
Joins the Boros Legion.
“has been having a better time of things ever since”, feeling like she can more properly put her strength to good use. Still misses the arena every now and then though, and is still hurting terribly from her grief.
Meets The Hellions (Campaign Start)
