Roster Comparison + Why I chose specific fighters

for the "What if?" Playstation Smash game. Some of these are a stretch for sure, but I'm still happy with my choices.

For the artwork, I tried to make them all look 3D, even from 2D artworks just like the original (Snake was a NIGHTMARE to do)

And even though not all of them are 1st party Sony IPs, I think that's main appeal of the PS1: the ability to use CDs & have more space is why it had so much 3rd party support

Some design explanations:

The grey concrete background is meant to parallel the rocky, black background, mimicking the colors for each console

The Stock/Time icon is modeled after the Start button, as opposed to the C-buttons from the Nintendo 64

Instead of a fiery background, the PS1 fighters have the blue background from the memory card and music player screen

Instead of an original symbol to represent Smash, I used the face buttons from the controller

The overarching theme of TotK seems to be “Fusion” and togetherness, and not just pertaining to the weapons and vehicles:

Rauru’s arm fusing to Link

The rediscovery of the Zonai people in general

The sages and their connection to their ancestor and secret stone.

The sages and Link himself, actually giving him “party members”

The Coalition of all of Hyrule’s races against the Demon King Army

The Draconic Master Sword would literally be a fusion of Zelda and Link’s power, empowering and deepening the bond during the ultimate final battle in the game You don’t just pour 10,000+ years of love and faith, sacrificing yourself for an ETERNITY, just for the sword to look exactly the same as it always is

And yes, I used the knife-ears ““nickname”” as inspiration for the different shapes.  (But I think that’s a dumb, fictional ‘insult’? Cause knives are rad)
