I N T I M A C Y There are many kinds of course such as physical, emotional, intellectual, sexual, spiritual, and experiential. While all kinds of intimacy are sacred, the rules are always the same. They all involve showing yourself & being vulnerable and they all demand courage and trust. Understanding the different types of intimacy and how necessary each of them are to our well being is crucial. It’s important to know where your voids are. For example, one might seek out sexual intimacy when what they’re really lacking is emotional intimacy. This is especially common in men and usually leads to disappointing and unfulfilling long term results. No shade to casual sex though. Sexual intimacy can absolutely exist exclusive of other kinds of intimacy in a healthy way. Every kind of intimacy has its place but for now I want to address physical intimacy. There is often a misconception that physical and sexual intimacy are one in the same. They are not. In a culture that is so dramatically touch deprived, physical intimacy means giving good hugs, holding hands, cuddling, touching while you talk, and kissing your friend’s faces. Far too many people are starved of these affections because of what I believe to be the gray misunderstood area between sex and touch. These two have become dangerously inseparable for some. It’s been revealed that when two people make skin to skin contact, their heartbeats sense one another and begin to align in pace as the bodies move towards equilibrium. Isn’t that incredible?! What better way to physicalize a mutual respect and understanding. In the same way that a good conversation fosters a meeting of the minds for intellectual intimacy, touching creates a physiological harmony and balance between those engaged for physical intimacy. We’re all here pursuing the same thing. Every decision we make is ultimately, whether directly or indirectly, towards our own happiness. Even the daily things we don’t want to do, we do because we believe that eventually they’ll pay off and lead to our happiness. Even those who dedicate parts of their lives to others are happy to do so. There isn’t a single thing anyone does which isn’t tied to the intimate relationship they have with their happiness. Understanding this, how can we make things easier for all of us? Intuition is the feeling of your soul nudging you; that silent subtle tug in a direction meant for you. It’s a quiet voice, but a powerful one. Too often, the more tangible forces at play in our decision making can overwhelm this magic knowing. Sometimes attempting to intellectualize our choices can lead us further from our calling. Our intuition doesn’t care about our self imposed worries, doubts, and insecurities. It doesn’t care about our longing for comfort. It leads us steadfastly towards what is meant for us.
