This is the 4th time I’ve started a tour right after thanksgiving and it’s rough every time. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue has been called "an otherwise unremarkable high-rise just north of the Cross Bronx Expressway,” but it is widely regarded as one of, if not the birthplace of Hip-Hop music and culture. ⁣ ⁣ As hip hop grew throughout the Bronx, 1520 was a starting point where Clive Campbell, later known as DJ Kool Herc, presided over parties in the community room at a pivotal point in the genre's history. ⁣ ⁣ DJ Kool Herc is credited with helping to start hip hop and rap music at a house concert at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue on August 11, 1973. Geto Boys “We Can’t Be Stopped” was the first rap record my mom bought for me, after she heard the radio version of “Mind Playing Tricks On Me.” The Record with Bill on the cover in the hospital after shooting himself in the eye. She hated that cover. Fast forward.... ‪I met Bushwick Bill for the first time at SXSW ‘18, then wound up DJing for him somehow...It was madness. He had just watched my set and complimented me on it- put me on cloud 9. I Told him how that cover scared my mom. “But she still liked the jams though, right?” I smiled and said “of course.” I had another show so I was about to leave when he told me he’d lost his music and didn’t have a DJ. I really had to leave, and I tried to jet out the back. I’m at the car and @eturnmusic came outside and told me “yo, Bushwick Bill says he’s not going on unless Mega Ran is in here.” What?! So I ran back in and Bill asked me to DJ his set. “I’m not a DJ man, really.” Bill told me “just search ‘Geto Boys instrumentals’ on YouTube, we’ll be fine.” I was super nervous, he wasn’t. I tried to tell him I wasn’t a DJ, but he was positive that I could do it. Bill killed it.
