back to owning and curating mp3s

i've decided to go back to own and curate my own library of mp3s. currently i'm in a transitional period where i still subscribe to spotify as well (will stop once my student discount runs out this summer).

how am i going to do this?

1. acquiring mp3s: mostly through a combination of ripping cds (it turns out my ten+ year old bluray player actually has a functionality to rip cds and save the files to a usb stick at 192kbps and my library has a large collection of cds), buying mp3s (itunes store & bandcamp), internet archive for bootlegs, or ripping it from video files. i'll mostly reserve buying cds for music that has changed my life.

2. curating my collection: i'm currently using itunes (aka music) for the curation. i'm sure there are better apps out there, but that's where all the music i gathered throughout the years currently still resides and i'm familiar with it. might change in the future.

3. listening: i bought the last generation ipod touch a few years ago, so i'll be using that mainly and my phone as a backup for when i forgot my ipod at home. i might resurrect my old ipod mini and ipod classic in the future. but that's a larger project for later

i know there are well thought out and sophisticated systems for managing your own mp3 collection and listing, but these are all tools i already have, which takes away the part where i have to invest time and energy into building up the system. this cobbled together system allows me to start right away.

i'll also be going through my old collection and konmari-ing the shit out of it. and also re-ripping cds that teenage me ripped at 128kbps where possible.

You know something I’ve figured out in the past few months as someone who 1. Doesn’t have a lot of friends and 2. Actually finds it very hard to make friends is that the fastest quickest route to befriending people is to engage with them like they’re already your friends

What do I mean by that? I mean, show up places and do things and talk to people. I joined the amateur theatre group in my city and a creative collective and I forced myself to go to meetups when I was tired and nervous about it but even moreso— I met a couple very cool people while working on a theatre project and I forced myself to ask for their numbers

And then I forced myself to text them! It felt so cringy and lame but that was just a fucking lie in my brain! I invited them to see movies and I sent them book & video game & movie recommendations and you know what? They appreciated that! They texted me back! I sent messages like “hey! How’s school?” Or “do you have any advice on grant applications?” And “you wanna get a beer sometime this week?” And every single time it felt like I was flinging myself off a big dark precipice into nothing and every single time I got a friendly response back

So like, the cringe is fucking fake, if you want people want to be your friend sometimes you literally just have to decide that they’re your friends and talk to them as such

Posts I would never gif because you need to hear it in order to bask in the full glory of semi-nude Elis’ sailor mouth. None of that would fly on air, and one of my favourite jokes is when people pretend the rules of radio apply to broadcasters outside their jobs (happens to the best of us 😔)

#i've got to watch this later but just wanted to add my thoughts re: swearing #when you hear someone swear that you wouldn't normally hear swear #it always makes me feel like we're more equal #a bit more like friends #but at the same time it can still completely take me by surprise #like i've become friends with one of my former profs #and he now swears regularly around me when we're chatting #but it still gives me that little jolt #it's still a bit weird #but like in a fun way #(watching it later because i can't use sound rn)
