The director also tells BuzzFeed that two fan-favorite characters are set to return.

AUSTIN — Director Guillermo del Toro is currently working on a script for a sequel to his 2013 international hit Pacific Rim.

While promoting his new FX series The Strain at the Austin Television Festival, del Toro told BuzzFeed that he and screenwriter Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk) have started work on a screenplay for Pacific Rim 2.

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” he told BuzzFeed. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

While the filmmaker stressed that Legendary Pictures has not formally agreed to put the script into production, he said that he and Penn are working on it as if it will be made one day.

“I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening,” he said with a laugh, adding that he hopes to tackle the sequel after producing his next project.

Del Toro also revealed that the script, as it stands now, includes the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) — and the story will follow the events of the first movie.

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

While Pacific Rim was a very modest hit in the U.S., grossing $101.8 million domestically, it was a sensation overseas, pulling in $309.2 million internationally (including $111.9 million in China alone). Legendary Pictures chief Thomas Tull recently told the website I Am Rogue that his studio would only make Pacific Rim 2“if we can crack the story [and] we all think it’s great,” and if del Toro is on board to direct it.

A rep for Legendary did not immediately have comment for this story.

Along with executive producing The Strain (as well as directing several episodes), del Toro is also directing Legendary’s horror film Crimson Peak with Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Hunnam, which is currently in post-production. He is also producing the animated feature The Book of Life for 20th Century Fox.

Fearful Friday: Villain of the Week

Yzma

Today’s post highlights Yzma, from The Emperor’s New Groove. Not only is this movie one of my favorites, because it is hilarious, but Yzma is completely ridiculous. How many villains have caused an entire film’s worth of shenanigans because they wanted to save on postage?

Yzma is the advisor for the Emperor, Kuzco. As seems to be the pattern with advisors in Disney movies, she wants to rule the kingdom. To fulfill her wish, she was “in the habit of trying to rule the country behind his back.” But this leads Kuzco to fire her, causually. Which is crazy, cause she practically raised him! While firing her, he humiliates her (i.e. Now, who’s in my chair?) and he tells her that she hit her stride 50 years ago. This leads to a series of unfortunate and hilarious events.

In her lair, Yzma smashes concrete Kuzco heads and her assistant, Kronk, tells her that it’s a good thing she took her frustration out on the heads rather than the real Kuzco. So, she decides to get rid of Kuzco…the real Kuzco. TO THE SECRET LAB!!!!

Her first plan was brilliant! She was going to turn Kuzco into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then she was going to put that flea in a box, then mail that box to herself. And when that box arrived, she would smash it with a hammer! But…to save on postage, she decides to kill him with poison during dinner. However, her plan is foiled because Kronk used extract of llama instead of regular poison (but in his defense, she should consider relabelling). This unforeen event meant they had to get rid of Kuzko’s llama body.

But Yzma is not an unreasonable villainess. Before sending Kronk to kill Kuzco, she agrees to having dessert and a cup of coffee. However, nothing in a Disney can be simple. Kronk was reluctant to kill Kuzco (PSA: Killing is bad!), and ended up losing his body.

After holding a memorial service for Kuzco and giving “a lovely eulogy,” (see, she is not unreasonable), Yzma goes with Kronk to find Kuzco. I don’t want to describe the entire movie, but as you can see, Yzma is great.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The human concept of friend is most nearly duplicated in Vulcan thought by the term t’hy’la, which can also mean brother and lover. Spock’s recollection (from which this chapter has drawn) is that it was a most difficult moment for him since he did indeed consider Kirk to have become his brother. However, because t’hy’la can be used to mean lover and since Kirk’s and Spock’s friendship was unusually close, this has led to some speculation over whether they had actualy indeed become lovers. At our request, Admiral Kirk supplied the following comment on this subject:'I was never aware of this lovers rumor, although I have been told that Spock encountered it several times. Apparently he had always dismissed it with his characteristic lifting of his right eyebrow which usually connoted some combination of surprise, disbelief and/or annoyance. As for myself, although I have no moral or other objections to physical love in all its many Earthly, alien, and mixed forms, I have always found my best gratification in that creature woman. Also, I would dislike being thought of as so foolish that I would select a love partner who came into sexual heat only once every seven years.’

Gene Roddenberry addresses slash fiction in his 1979 novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The book is a very strange take on the franchise he created, including mentions of “mind control riots,” “New Humans,” and a brain implant that allowed JTK to see the death of the Klingon vessels from the beginning of the movie while on shore leave.

(There’s also the matter of the woman seen dying on the transporter pad along with commander Sonak — she was Lori Ciana, JTK’s wife at the time.)

There you have it. Kirk and Spock are just friends!
