Why is it even called the Swiss guard... do you actually have to be Swiss to join? I guess there are Swiss Italians right... Wikipedia says it's 10% of the country. Weird type of restrictions for hiring though. I wonder if anybody made a discrimination claim against them... although I guess the Vatican legal system prob doesn't even recognize the concept of discrimination LOL

matejko & wyspiański :^]
hello! apologies for taking so long to get to this one, this was the original ask game
matejko: what is your favourite period in history?
(I'm going to answer for Polish history exclusively, because otherwise I'd never pick one period for all of the world. for the history of English-speaking regions it's probably the 1600s)
I mean, the 17th century was as batshit in Poland as it was everywhere else, I very much appreciate the chaos and no other period is quite as exciting in terms of military history (88% of the century spent in war and all...) but if I'm being honest, it's 1772-1830. the je ne sais quoi of what Lech Mażewski described as "Rzeczpospolita Jeden i Pół" ('Commonwealth One and a Half') can never be replicated
wyspiański: what sorts of creative stuff do you enjoy making? painting, writing, embroidery, doodling at the margins of your notebooks? do you mostly stick to one type of art, or is it a little bit of everything (like the absolute madman overachiever wyspiański)?
ol' Stanisław is very much my role model in this regard, I would love to try every single medium of art at least once. I mostly write and do character drawing, but once I have a bit more free time I hope to jump back into making linocuts and drypoints

stryjeńska for the ask game (maybe something music related please?)
I love traditional songs and white singing and folk melodies!! I'm not very good at knowing artists or having recommendations tho :(
some fave songs that come to mind (with youtube links):
да забіліли сніжки (ukrainian) performed by laboratorium pieśni
ой гаю, мій гаю (ukrainian) performed by werchowyna - we sing this one with my choir, i love it so much
zoriuszka (eastern slavic??) performed by sound of triglav
dzied' papriekšu, brāļa māsa (latvian) performed by auļi & tautumeitas - actually not sure if this one is an authentic folk song or a folk inspired modern one, but it slaps
rozwijaj się, wiunku (polish, kurpie dialect) performed by chudoba
bonus: this one i'm 99,99% sure is a modern folk-inspired composition and not a genuine folk song but i like it a lot so also linking (not youtube bc i couldn't find it there) балада пра ліцьвіна by rokash
a special shoutout to traditional christmas carols bc they are usually excellent. and special special shoutout to tiernapojat bc i know the lyrics by heart. and then another special shoutout to sea shanties, and to that one welsh song about a black pig (??)
if you live near warsaw, the spring edition of wszystkie mazurki świata festival is coming soon: LINK TO THE PROGRAM HERE. i have been a couple of times and it was great <3

malczewski & bacciarelli!! 🌞
good evening!!
malczewski: have you ever been told you look similar to a figure in a painting? // if not: are there any paintings you wish you had been portrayed in? (be it as the main figure or a background character)
I have! there is a number of early modern portraits whose sitters look similar to me, but it then again, all men with long hair get told they look the same
bacciarelli: favourite polish historical figure?
ADAM MIEROSŁAWSKI. (aka a possible prototype for Verne's very own Captain Nemo)
