This week, 36 years ago, Lynn and I were married. All week long we have reflected on, and celebrated, our sacred union. It has not always been easy (mostly my fault), but it HAS always been worth it. I would not choose any other person to be my partner in life. I love this woman so much. It was ONE year ago this week my personal world was shut down, then turned upside down. A lot of things have happened (did y’all hear there was a thing called a "pandemic"?). My heart grieves along with any of you who lost anything this past year. Probably that means I am grieving with everyone. Even though some of the things that came my way tasted very much like a “crap sandwich”... I celebrate all of them. Especially the painful things. I know a lot of us are hurting and afraid (with tons of good reasons). I take comfort in knowing that no matter what happens, God’s got this. One thing I'm learning is when it comes to things only God can do, I'm better off leaving those things to God. I was outlining what I thought was a great book idea: “How to Triple Your Productivity”. Then I realized I didn’t need to write a book. Being productive is more about eliminating resistance (drag) than about getting better at anything. Here are 3 simple practices that, in my experience, will triple your output: 1. Have you ever noticed that over the years, you tend to do pretty much the same things? I think one of the real tricks of success is to recognize these things you tend to do, and then find ways to make these tendencies support your success. In fact, I think most people are miserable because they fail to do just that. Instead of working with their tendencies in order to succeed (almost effortlessly), they identify their tendencies as the problem and vow to change. That, my friend, is called swimming against the river. And while you may get credit for working your tail off while doing it, you're not going to make much progress relative to the shoreline. So what does this all mean to you? In my experience, it means that if you find yourself fighting the same old battles (chronic lateness, procrastination, forgetfullness), you've probably unwittingly been holding yourself back by resisting your own gifts. If you have trouble with authority, why work in a job when it's clear you'd be happier as an entrepreneur? If you are always late for appointments — why not just stop making appointments (Arnold Shwarzenneger reportedly refused to make appointments with anyone, back when he was the governor of the state of California). And if you have tendencies that are frowned upon by others — for instance, sleeping during the day and staying up all night — why not look for a way to turn the tendency into an asset (for instance, by working via Internet with clients or companies in a different time zone… where suddenly YOU are the early riser!)? Just because certain tendencies, behaviors and attitudes are not “acceptable” in one context does not mean those qualities are “bad”. It simply means — at least in my experience — you need to find a different context! And that decision — how you live your life — is (for most of us) entirely a choice. Now take a moment to think about this… In what ways could your “limiting tendencies” become strengths? How could your re-arrange your life to make it so? One of the great blessings that has come out of being laid up in a reclining chair post-surgery: I’ve read more books in the last six weeks than in the previous six months. And most of it not light reading. I like challenging books, both in terms of subject matter, and length (I seem to have a preference for books that are roughly the length of the New York City telephone directory). You who are worried, weak, weary... take courage! The dead areas of your life are being resurrected. Your barren fields will once again produce abundance. Your empty home will once again be filled with love and laughter. Your broken heart will be mended. I have shared about my recent challenges in eery area of my life. God has used htese challenges to disabuse me of the illusion that I have ANY control over my life. And that has been the richest learning I’ve ever experienced. He alone is sovereign. He alone is my source of peace. When I am hard pressed on all sides, and facing many trials, I am learning to rejoice. In the early Church, Peter and John were forbidden by the authorities to preach in the name of Jesus. But they did it anyway. They prayed for the courage to speak even more boldly. And the book says, that the people “saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. Six weeks ago I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. I'm still in more pain than I was pre-surgery. But… Things are definitely looking up. Yesterday the surgeon pronounced me to be "right on schedule" in the recovery process. It'll take six months for me to feel "normal" again, and a year for the healing to be complete. But everything is going well. Today is my first day out of the sling for an extended period of time. I'm sore, and stiff, but I feel like I came in number one ☝️in one of my life's bigger challenges! “Ray, what’s up with you?” May I just be real? I have been through hell and back. Incredibly painful surgery, opioids, two trips to the ER, a blood infection, and at least one intense prayer asking God to let me die rather than continue to suffer. (He stamped my request “DENIED: MISSION INCOMPLETE”.) I'm still standing. I seem to be on the road to recovery. I have been cursed and abandoned by those who once loved me. Vilified for “too much Jesus talk”, and crucified for not enough. Praised for sharing my doubts and difficulties, condemned for expressing those same doubts (one kind soul said he does not believe I “was ever really saved”). Why do I share this? It's not to get sympathy, to brag, nor to play the victim. It's to DEMONSTRATE that you can walk through the fire and walk out purified instead of deep fried. We are the sons and daughters of the Divine One, El Shadai, the Ancient of Days, Elohim Adonai. We were born for this time. No matter what we may personally face.
