Who TF Is Van Hansen? (Mild Spoilers)
Van Hansen is the star of the indie book series They Call Him Antichrist. He is the son of Sherry Hansen and the Devil, or Lord of Hell, Lucifer. He lives at his home in Baton Rouge, LA, in an unspecified neighborhood with his mother and his younger sister, Rosie, who suffers from anorexia. He is a trouble child, constantly getting into fights, getting expelled, and committing things that God Himself hasn't even labeled as a sin yet. His mother personally blames him for her alcoholism.
He is 12 years old in the "Pilot Book", or Book 0, and 14 years old in Book 1.
In Book 0, he meets his best friend, Richard Wheeler, as well as Richie's brother, Jerry, and his other friends, Kevin Murphy, Bucky Harrison and Eugene Barnes (Who goes by Simon). He also meets a witch named Lucy who casts an Awakening Spell on him, transforming him into a monster---- goat legs, a tail, oddly shaped horns and razor sharp teeth all earning him the title of "The Devil Boy", a name given to him by the locals.
He struggles to take anything seriously, and has severe impulse control problems. From the jokes he makes and how far he's willing to go with them, you would figure him to be a racist, a homophobe, a sexist, an overall bad person. And, while yes, he is an awful person, he doesn't actually give a shit if you're black, white, Hispanic, Asian, if you're a boy or a girl, who you bring to the bedroom, or what religion you follow. At the end of the day, he's going to be a dick to you. He's an equal opportunist.
While he is objectively a bad dude, he has people in his life that he cares about greatly, even though he sucks at showing it. Rosie and Richie? He would die for them. He's also weirdly responsible for how irresponsible he is: by the age of 14, he is the sole breadwinner of his house, working at a gas station which is about a fifteen minute walk away. He mows the lawn, gets the groceries, cleans the house, everything his own mother refuses to do.
He loves going out with friends, usually taking his boys with him for karaoke nights, bowling or basketball games, etc. If they don't got the cash, he'll manage to scrape up just enough to pay for them.
He deals with intrusive thoughts, which does not go well with the previously mentioned undiagnosed impulse disorder. And, despite his entire situation, he isn't an angry person. He's usually relatively chill, he just goes a little to far with his teasing at times. He almost never loses his temper, as he has a hard time taking anything to heart.
Conclusion: He SUCKS (But in a fun way).

What Is They Call Him Antichrist About? It is a series of novellas that follow and episodic formula with an overarching storyline. That storyline goes as follows: God gets sick of Satan's shit, so He casts him up to Earth---- forever banished from the afterlife, Heaven or Hell. On Earth, the Devil has a child, whose name is Van Hansen. Though, Van is unaware of this as for the majority of his life, he's always been human.
Van is a troubled child. He gets into fights, sneaks out, is incredibly crude and has zero shame; nothing could ever seem to set him straight. He's been expelled in countless schools all over Louisiana. Public, private, military, boarding, Christian boarding, more private schools----- leaving him with only one option: the BRYDR, or the Baton Rouge Youth Department of Rehabilitation; which is an alternative program that you cannot, under any circumstance, get expelled from. Done something illegal? Go to juvie, serve your time, and come right back. Supposedly this program helps kids become... well, rehabilitated. But of course, government programs like these which are funded by the state never seem to really work.
When he gets there, he finds a girl named Lucy, who truly believes that she is a witch. He and a few of the kids there tease Lucy until she promises to cast a spell on them and make them pay. Thing is: she didn't have a spell. At least, not until she finds one on the back of a cereal box while unscrambling the puzzle on it. This is an awakening spell, which makes Van become "The Devil Boy".
Ever since then, his life has not been able to return to being even remotely normal. He is constantly being harassed by the supernatural. Werewolf equivalents, aliens, ghosts, vampires, a magical tiara, zombies, fish people. And somehow, the majority of these conflicts are the result of Van's own stupidity and horrible life choices.
This is the base idea for the books. For more info, click the link in my bio.
