Friday’s Stout Selection is a 2022 vintage of @sierranevada Barrel Aged Narwhal! A wonderfully well balanced bourbon barrel aged stout! I see that @foothillsbrewing is retiring their 22oz bottling line. I applaud the move to 12oz bottles for Stouts but am a bit nostalgic about losing the traditional 22oz Stout! I reached back into the Stoutwhisperer Stout Cellar and pulled out a 2016 10th Anniversary vintage of Sexual Chocolate to celebrate the past! The 2016 still holds up as a wonderful Imperial Stout! The chocolate notes may have faded over time, but overall this has really aged well! Sunday’s Stoutwhisperer Stout Selection is a 2016 vintage of @prairieales Branson Jamboree! This is an Imperial Stout aged in Oak Barrels and is a blend of Evan Williams 10-year, Buffalo Trace, Madiera, and brandy barrels. It was released in February of 2016! I must admit my Stout bar was set pretty low for this one…. not sure what I would find under the cap. What I found is a delightful dark elixir with notes of oak, chocolate, cherry and dark fruit! It’s probably past it’s peak since it’s over seven years old, but it’s surprisingly tasty! That’s what I love about Stouts! Anyone remember this collaboration? A circa 2016 treat from @westbrookbrewingco and @eviltwinbrewing - Imperial Mexican Biscotti Cake Break! Boxing Day brings the return of English Premier League soccer as well as the 2022 vintage of @casitabrews Querido Y Perdido! Had a chance to visit the Burial Raleigh exhibit to pick up some Stouts to take home for the Christmas holiday weekend and while we were there, I got the chance to savor a sample of the 10th release of their double barrel Stout, Houtenhamer! I’ll let the eloquence of the Burial team describe this elixir: Houtenhamer. A Double Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout Aged Twice in Bourbon Barrels. The tale of this massive earthen tool has carried us into the end-of-year festival with each passing turn around the sun. Made of aged stock that reached nearly 16% and was blended down for legality purposes, this blended Imperial Stout was forged of 75% Imperial Stout aged twice in fresh Willets bourbon barrels for more than 1 year, and 25% young-aged Imperial Stout, which serves to both invigorate life while bringing us back to legal limits. Welcome to our 2022 Cuvee. A hand-carved rock of ice melded with double-oaked Woodford, accompanied by a slice of bourbon chess pie with caramel sauce, and a chocolate ganache with rum raisin. Tough to compete with that word salad! Suffice it to say, it’s a thick, chewy bourbony sipping Stout that deserves every accolade it receives! Saturday’s Stout is the 2022 vintage of @perennialbeer Abraxas! Abraxas belongs in the OG wing of the Stout Hall of Fame! One of the original, if not the original, “sweet and heat” Stouts! An Imperial Stout with Ancho Chilis, Cacao Nibs, Cinnamon, and Vanilla, the sweet hits the tongue and the heat hits on the swallow….although not too much sweet or too much heat! I had to dig deep into the Stout Cellar today to find the only pink label Stout I have….a 2020 vintage of @bottlelgoicbrewing Prodigal Physics! We’re celebrating the impending birth of granddaughter #3 (grandchild #4) with a baby shower today…so everything is pink! Not that I was complaining, as Prodigal Physics is a Neapolitan ice cream inspired Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout! Sunday’s Stout Selection is a 2018 vintage of @bottlelogicbrew Leche Borracho! After a few years of a comfortable sleep in the Stout Cellar, it was time to rouse this spicy nectar! When I popped the cap, I knew the time was right! A cinnamon aroma was followed with a sip of stout, peppers, cinnamon, bourbon, and the special kick of tequila! The Halloween weekend starts with an amazing brew from @southernpinesbrewing called Drunken Vigils! Love the skeleton theme so I added my own skeleton! Theme aside, Drunken Vigils is one Stoutstanding nectar! The nose is all chocolate and the taste is a combination of chocolate, coffee, and bourbon notes, with the swallow all about the bourbon barrel. A nice thick mouthfeel really seals the deal!
