Looks Like Hurricane Joaquin Might Be Joining Us This Weekend - Safety Tips
Looks Like Hurricane Joaquin Might Be Joining Us This Weekend – Safety Tips
Given current predicts it looks likes Hurricane Joaquin may be joining us over the weekend, although I suspect by the time it gets to us it will be a tropical storm, or just a soggy depression. However, there remains a possibility we will get blasted by a lot of rain and see some wild woolly storms aiming to rip through Baltimore in the next few days. I am re-posting my public awareness blog,…

Hurricane Tips for NYC
Okay so fashion week may or may not get delayed/cancelled/unknown this year due to Hurrican Irene.
I for one, had to cancel my trip up the Coast to Cape Cod- for my birthday.
Oh well- here are some tips
take pictures of your property, before inside & out
charge camera for “after photos”
get canned food, non-perishables, and loads of water.
gas up & reserve gas (when you run out of supplies your drive may be long or you may need the gas for generators)
also a handheld radio with batteries.. again if there is no power, you’re not gonna be watching tv or your computer screen
batteries, flashlights
get cash out of ATMs (no power = no electricity = no atms)
REALLY IMPORTANT to find out if you’re in an evacuation zone, if you do, look for a shelter and if you have pets, do this ahead of time and find a pet friendly shelter
find a sheltered room in your house (bathroom or closet) in case windows break …continue to imagine scene on your own
don’t go outside!
There may be stuff flying around like stop signs.. or teeny little things like nails which can just become a-weapon, seriously-don’t go outside.
even if it seems peaceful, that means the eye of the storm is above you and the other half may come through any second.
move anything you may have outdoors to indoors or secure it down.
KEEP IT COOL!
just prepare for the worst and hope for the best
Love Ya'll
Let’s do this New York!! <3
ps: your toilets may not flush

Just a tip for animal owners:
Make sure that you have your carriers/leashes/food etc. ready to go in case you have to evacuate. Most temporary shelters accept companion animals if they’re leashed or crated, but you don’t want to be running around at the last second trying to find everything for them. If you have strays that you take care of, try to bring them into your house beforehand (if possible; sometimes it’s not). Animals are just as susceptible to these disasters as we are, and they usually have less of an idea of what’s going on. You don’t know how long you might end up evacuated, and your animals might end up left alone in the house for days or even weeks (unlikely for this hurricane, but not impossible).
The ASPCA has a good list on preparing your animals for a disaster (and their webpage has specifics about Hurricane Irene shelters and stuff right now).

National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month.
If an emergency occurs 60 minutes from now, will you be ready?  National Preparedness Month is geared towards educating families on how to prepare and respond to natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
How to Prepare for an Emergency?
First and foremost you should research what natural disasters are more likely to occur in your area (i.e. hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes etc.).  Once you have researched what is more likely to occur in your area then it’s time to prepare.
Develop two plans, an evacuation plan and a shelter- in-place plan.  Put both plans on paper and routinely review them with your significant other and children if they are old enough to implement your plan(s).
Your evacuation plan should consist of rendezvous points just in case you are separated or if you are coming from work, school etc.  Stay away from major highways/roadways, because these will be the first to become heavily congested.  Your evacuation plan can be as easy as taking your family to a relatives or a friend’s house.  Everyone’s plan will be different so don’t get nervous if your plan doesn’t look like your friends, neighbors or family members.  It is Your family plan, it is what works for You and your family.  Make sure you have all telephone numbers of people you would need to contact in the event of an emergency (family members, friends, gas/electric company, emergency personnel, insurance company etc.).  If your children are of age get them involved in your plan by giving them a task to be in charge of, such as making sure all the “Emergency Bags” are accounted for or making sure the first-aid kit is complete.  Don’t forget Fido.  Yes you must include your pet(s) in your plans as well if you have one or some.  After you have your evacuation plan figured out your now ready to set up your “Emergency Bags” or BOBs as some may call it.
If your plan is to shelter-in-place then you need to prepare your home.  If you have a basement that should be the place you hunker down until the storm passes.  You are home so make your safe zone as comfortable as possible.  If you have young children, make sure you have things that will keep them occupied such as coloring books or board games.  In your basement make sure you have enough supplies to get you through the storm.  Your supplies should include but not limited to:
First-Aid Kit
Flashlight(s) (with spare batteries)
Lantern(s) (with spare batteries)
Candles
First Starting Kit
Water (1gal/person/day)
Food
Change of Clothes
Blankets

You never know when a disaster might strike. Not to sound too doom and gloom, but the fact is that all of us live in an area with at least some risk of an earthquake, flood, hurricane, tornado, tsunami, or other natural disaster. You need to be prepared in the case of an emergency because &
