Just to add a little here waaay back when the Justice League went International (DeMatteis/Maguire run) & broke off into the spinoff JL Europe Sue & Ralph were part of the core JLE team. They were super cute, more like a crimesolving couple you’d see in a TV series than superheroes & Sue was more than just his wife or a supporting character - she was everybit the investigator EM was... JLE wasn’t the best book but I really dig how they took a character I wasn’t too familiar with & made th fun, interesting & charming. A few years later with Identity Crisis it just went further to underscore that Metzger didn’t really have a real grip on the characters. Sue felt like a body count rather than a character, Zatanna should sue for character assassination & even Dr Light didn’t square with any previous iterations of himself. Intriguing concept poorly executed. Glad they’re back :)
What are your thoughts on how the Dibny’s were treated, and killed off?
You know they’re back right? They are alive right now. Their tragic fate was retconned recently.
When I first read Identity Crisis I was just getting into comics and was just borrowing trades from the library. I remember thinking that it just didn’t have the scale that Crisis on Infinite Earths had. I wasn’t particularly attached to Ralph or Sue at the time. So the emotional impact was lost on me at the time.
Later I learned that DC was “responding to the trajedy of 9/11″ when writing Identity Crisis. To be clearer, they didn’t want to write a story where a building falls down. So they decided to write a story where Elongated Man’s wife was raped and murdered. I think we can all agree that most ideas inspired by 9/11 are at the very least sad.
When I became more invested in the DCU I learned that in the tie-ins surrounding Infinite Crisis, 52, and Countdown, the characters Jean Loring, Ralph Dibny and Mary Batson just get caught in this stupid trainwreck of a story where they are either corrupted or killed off. I include Mary Batson because I will not forgive DC for how gross that storyline was.
But yeah that whole mess was retconned. In Gail Simone’s Secret Six (2015) she brought back Elongated Man and Sue Dibny. They are now alive and well. It’s one of the best things to come from the New 52 reboot. While other writers were using it to explore SuperWonder, Simone took advantage of it and gave the Dibnys a happy ending. Gail has our best interests at heart.

The latest issue of my comic book series GUN is out today on ComiXology. I’m really proud of the work and I’d like as many people to see it as possible. It’s fully painted, watercolor, a lot of love goes into the book.
My site doesn’t allow for Pay What U Want pricing but if you email me Jack (@) GUNcomic dot com, I can work something out with Paypal or whatever, I just want to get the book in front of as many eyeballs as possible :)
