I have been chipping away at this armchair build for awhile. Finally got all the joinery lined up and glued it a few days ago. Finished this handpan last week. Just like the last one, this one took over 6 months to build due to not having much time to spend in the shop. Glad it to finally show it off a bit. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity and resources to make things, like these wood pieces I made in my lathe. The process clears my mind, finishing things is deeply satisfying, and progressing and learning new skills feels good for my brain. There is a 10in diameter shallow ash bowl and a walnut stick vase. Been pretty busy with the last few stages of my PhD program lately so opportunities to spend time at the workshop have been rare. I spent a few hours tuning this handpan this weekend and it’s coming together nicely. I really enjoy tuning steel. It’s literally a process of creating harmonies where none existed before. There’s something very satisfying about that. Each oval shape vibrates in three frequencies when activated and tuning requires those three frequencies to be in harmony. I finished tuning this #handpan last week. For a few days I was struggling to get one of the notes to sound how I wanted and doubted if it would ever be able to tune up good enough to call “finished.” By staying focused, taking some calculated risks (using an air powered hammer late in the process), and listening to what the material needed more than what I wanted, I was able to complete a pretty sweet sounding piece of steel. The workshop continues to teach valuable life lessons! I often apply my workshop lessons on things like patience, humility, and focus to other areas of my life, like the PhD dissertation I’m currently working on. It’s important to have hobbies, not just side hustles that we commodify and drain of the love and passion, but actual hobbies that we give time to outside of capitalist calculations and consumerist tendencies, that we do because it is just a satisfying thing to do. This #handpan, once the glue dries and I finish it up, is always going to be a special one for me. I started it last summer, 9 months ago, but soon after I placed all my spare time endeavors on a back burner while I went on the academic job market as I entered the final year of my PhD program, focusing everything I had on achieving my dream of being a full time, tenure track professor. Well, a job was got and I’m back to beating metal on the weekends! So playing this drum will be a symbol of achieving long term goals, of getting lucky when things far outside of your control align in your favor, and staying focused long enough to be ready for those opportunities when they come. I visited @onelonginhale and @jdrum14 some days ago on my last road trip. I made them this handpan last year and one of the notes had gone a little sharp so I brought a hammer and knocked it back in tune. I asked the vibration to play together nicely.
