Reclaimed American Elm
Reclaimed American Elm is a specie that can be frequently found throughout the Northern Midwest.  Elm tree’s grew to be very large and were used as structural beams in many buildings.  These timbers can be reclaimed and reused for new construction timber frames or be sawn, kiln dried and processed to create flooring.
Tumblr media
Timbers hewn on 2 sides are referred to as carrier beams or sleeper beams.  These types of timbers allow for wide width flooring boards to be created.
Tumblr media
This timber will yield nice 11″ boards all day!
Tumblr media
These timbers will be sawn to yield the best widths possible.  With some of the cracks and rot not all large timbers create quality wide boards.  All boards will be stacked with stickers for kiln drying.
This stock of Elm was sawn in half and also run through re-saw’s to speed up the cutting process.
Tumblr media
Stickers are placed every 2 feet within each stack allowing air to circulate thru the stack while the wood is in the kiln drying process.
Tumblr media
After kiln drying the lumber is planed to thickness and ripped to width
Tumblr media
Planing and ripping the boards to thickness and width helps provide efficiency in the milling process and consistency in grading process.
Tumblr media
American Elm creates beautiful flooring with its natural color and also takes stain and other coating’s well.

Helpful tips for taking quality photos with your smartphone
Camera’s on smartphones have gotten better and better over the years and taking good photos helps sell product.  You have heard the saying that a picture is worth one thousand words and that is especially true with good photography. We have a few suggestions for smartphone photographers.
Photo of Reclaimed Antique Oak Flooring by Connor Burns
Tumblr media
The first suggestion would be to go to your settings on your phone and select your camera.  Your camera has grid settings that can be turned on. This example is with an Iphone 6 .
Tumblr media
The grid setting help keep your photo’s focused and in scale with your background.  You can lightly see the grid in the photo of Hickory re-saw stock.
Tumblr media
The second suggestion would be to zoom in or zoom out on your product.  Get your camera set so a customer could see the whole product.  You can zoom in or out by pushing your fingers on the screen and pinching in or out with your fingers.
Reclaimed Hickory resaw stock close up showing more detail.
Tumblr media
Photo of Hickory re-saw stock taken further out more wood less detail.
Tumblr media
Next take many photos of the product you plan on listings or sharing.  Lighting can be a challenge and taking photos from different angles helps capture good lighting.  Natural sunlight is perfect at the right angle and time.  The RWE allows you to upload unlimited photos.
The same reclaimed Hickory re-saw stock photo was taken in the shade and the qualities of the wood are not as clear as the photo is much darker.
Tumblr media
There are a variety of applications that can be used to alter your photos such as Avairy.  As you can see a good filter and the ability to annotate the photo can enhance your ability to visually describe your products.  Natural photos do often times turn out better.
This photo was filtered and annotated by Avairy
Tumblr media
Capture that natural look of your product.  Focusing your photos on some better qualities of a bunk of wood or a building can create hesitancy for a buyer.  If your bunk of wood has some defects such as broken ends or if a beam has some rot try and include the natural imperfection in your photo.
Tumblr media
Being able to show all of the qualities of your products with fair pricing will help build relationships with many buyers.  Good photos help build trust with your customers while showing the character and quality of the wood.

How to buy Reclaimed Wood Flooring and Paneling
There are many options of reclaimed flooring and paneling available.  One of the first questions to answer is what grade of material are you looking for?
Tumblr media
Reclaimed wood flooring and paneling products are made in a variety of species and grades with many levels of prices and looks.  Painted barn siding is a type of reclaimed wood that is commonly found in softwood specie and is better used as paneling rather than flooring.  A rustic Oak hardwood product is better suited for flooring but can also be used for paneling.  Select options of reclaimed wood are achieved as the interior of the beams and boards are exposed by sawmills and moulders.
Photo from Elmwood Reclaimed Timber
Tumblr media
Requesting samples from a company marketing reclaimed wood flooring and paneling is also a great way to check out the quality of what you are interested in buying.  Prompt response of communication and product is a good sign to remember if the company has a longer than usual lead time on receiving product.  You are most likely in good hands with replacing product if needed and receiving quality material.  Kiln drying is a key step for quality reclaimed wood so make sure to ask about that process.  Kiln drying helps stabilize the reclaimed wood to prevent movement as well as eradicates infestation of insects.
Pioneer Millworks Contact Us
Tumblr media
Edge profiles of reclaimed paneling and flooring are common options to choose from.  Flooring is typically made with a tongue and groove edge profile while paneling products may have a ship lap of square edge profile.  Tongue and groove edge profiles provide a tighter fit and can be more of a problem if not milled properly.  Ask for samples in the same thickness and make sure the product is milled well by putting like edge profiles together.  Quality millwork is marketed and can easily be inconsistent with improper equipment, machine setups and sharpness of knives for milling.  These imperfections can be challenging to handle unless you choose a company that stands behind what they sell.
Tumblr media
Widths and thickness of reclaimed wood flooring and paneling are options to choose.  Reclaimed wood flooring and paneling is sold in random width groupings and random lengths of 2-12’.  Flooring is most commonly made in 3/4” thick planks while for wall or ceiling paneling applications a 1/2” product is all that is necessary.  Rustic reclaimed wood is milled in 5/8” thick flooring boards which allows for maximum yield while retaining the rustic look and feel.  The wider the board the lower the quality of some rustic products.  Wider rustic boards are less common due to cracks and splits and overall stress of the reclaimed wood over the years.  Wider flooring planks of 3/4” thickness will provide more stability for flooring applications.
Photo from Reclaimed Lumber Products
Tumblr media
Timeline of buying and receiving reclaimed wood flooring and paneling can range for certain products depending on the company.  4-6 weeks is a standard timeline for companies providing quality kiln dried products.  Specifications of widths, specie and lengths may require additional time to locate and process.  The pre-finishing of reclaimed wood and paneling may add on time to the project but also saves on install.  Reclaimed wood flooring and paneling products are commonly recommended to be placed in the area of installation to provide the wood time to acclimate to the installation environment.

Tumblr media
Finding the right company to buy reclaimed wood flooring and paneling from can take some time.  Companies who provide FREE samples and show their people, products and process are companies to pay attention to.  The supplier page of the Reclaimed Wood Exchange list local suppliers by state.  The supplier page of each company may have listings of material for sale and links to all contact info, links to google maps, company website, Facebook page and reviews.
Tumblr media
Login today and find the supplier you have been looking for.  If your a supplier and your company is not listed contact us through the form at the bottom of your states supplier page.
