Lord of the Flies

Thinking this morning about how perfectly Lord of the Flies describes the liberal/right-wing split when attempting to rationalize away horrific violence.

After the children murder Simon in a kind of violent blood orgy, they all go their separate ways and then they have to deal with the fact of what they’ve done.

The Liberal camp (Ralph, Piggy, Samaneric) rationalize. It wasn’t us. I mean sure, we were there, and we were dancing and chanting, and yes, maybe I stabbed him a few times, but it was an accident, he shouldn’t have come out of the trees like that, it was them, the other kids that really did it.

This is the perfect parallel to modern liberalism’s bad faith in the face of unending policy that leads to the murder of countless innocents every single day in drone attacks and bombings. “Well, sure, it’s us, but it’s not really us. It’s the military, you know? We just reap the benefits of american military force. But we don’t like it.” This is HIllary’s platform, and to a lesser degree Bernie’s.

The right-wing fascist side (Jack and his “savages”) takes a more direct approach. That wasn’t a child at all that we killed. It was an evil being disguised as a child. And yes, we killed it, but no, it can never really die, so we must always be vigilant against the eternal threat of this kind of evil. And also, the liberal camp: They’re looking shifty too.

Which is, of course, the content of any internet comment section ever, and also the main platform for every Republican candidate.

"Do you want me to be your boyfriend?", Ralph's tone was delicate, playful.

Jack placed his arm around Ralph's waist and pulled him closer.

"I want you to be my husband!", he said, a spark of excitement in his voice.

"We can't get married, Jack", Ralph laughed.

Jack stared into his eyes for a couple of seconds, then got closer to the blonde.

"We can do everything, Ralph.", he pulled the blankets until it covered their heads.
