☀️CBC Summer Challenge!☀️

For June and July, We get to Apply! *knee slap*

I have some challenges for y'all to apply what you've been learning here. It doesn't have to be all at once, you can do some, though I'd be incredibly happy if you did all of them. You can do these multiple times, make it a habit, even! Again... It'd make me incredibly happy if you did.

The Goals:

1. Find Black creators in your fandom and/or creative space and follow them! This can be writers, artists, poets, streamers, etc. all creatives!

2. Read, and leave a kudos and/or comment of support on a Black writer's fic!

3. Reblog a Black creator's art with genuine, supportive tags!

4. Commit to a piece of media where someone Black is one of the Main characters! This can be books, TV shows, plays and musicals, video games- whatever! Especially if they're by Black creators! Apply what you've learned here- how are they depicted, what did you really like, was there something you learned technique wise? Was there something you felt was not as respectful as it could have been?

5. Read fic where a Black character is the main character! Same idea as number 4.

*Note: I'm not saying you have to leave that commentary on someone's fic. That's a YOU choice. I'm asking you to think about it for your own growth, especially if you're a writer.

6. If there's a Black character in your fandom, share (respectfully done!!) art of them! If there's not one, try looking into spaces where there are Black characters and share those (an easy one to find is Wyll Ravengard. I'm barely in that fandom yet and I get things of him on my For You. Or maybe ask your friends what they like!)

7. Practice something you've seen! If there's a style of hair you liked, or a way to render brown skin that was really nice- practice! Or, if you read beautiful prose describing a Black character, try it yourself. Practice!

Well!

So first, let's clear a common misconception: no, President Abraham Lincoln did not love Black people nor see them as human equals. At best he was centrist about it (though, even his implication that 'exceptional' Black men ought to vote got him assassinated).

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do, it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union...I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free."

The "freeing of slaves" after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 was meant to kneecap the economic and military powers of the seceded South. Lettuce stop making a white savior figure out of Lincoln, or thinking that my people's shackles were unchained via anything other than desperate war strategy and extreme violence. Think on that, for a moment.

That being said!

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

Consider going through the Smithsonian website to learn about Juneteenth! Recognize why it's an actual day of freedom, versus July 4th and the independence of a select few.

They seem to be under the impression in their tags and notes that I didn't create the original art because I reblog Gaza donations and I post about Palestinian issues. The stolenthrone person and the person who requested the edit are pretty proud of getting rid of Asma's skin tone and features, so I don't mind putting their usernames out on blast like this.

Both of them seem to be pretty keen on reposting other people's art + posting art with their "edits" on top, so if you are an artist in the Dragon Age fandom, especially an artist of color and or Palestinian, please block and report these people.

as weird as this sounds I kind of want to write a COD/JJBA crossover fancomic exploring the "relationship" between the two versions of Soap we have. but Misha flavored so they're brothers. they have a weird sort of shared identity thing going on where Johnny wins out over John in being called "Soap" (the og!Soap changed his last name to Jones for reasons that will become clear in the comic, if I ever write it, so he becomes Jojo.) This has consequences for the narrative and Johnny's fate. because you see

realization just struck me. this is why reboot!Soap (Johnny) doesn't "feel like" Soap to me. it's not necessarily that his personality is vastly different (he is different for sure, but I think he could've matured into the Soap we see in the original trilogy). it's because his whole dynamic with the 141 shifted.

in the original, Soap handpicked those men and had command over them—Ghost and Roach included—and watched them all die because of a series of pretty disastrous (and selfish) decisions made by Shepherd, Price, and himself. we see the world through his eyes in his FNG years, so he can't speak for himself, and by the time he's a character with a voice he's been there, done that. we don't know how old he is but tbh I always put him in his 30s (dead at 37 RIP).

Johnny starts out as the FNG, and while the whole cast is younger (I think Price is like, 39 in the reboot, while in the original he realistically would've been at or just slightly over 45 minimum if I have my information straight), he feels like the youngest in the group. iirc he lied about his age to get into the SAS in the first place, but I think that's multiplayer information so whatever. point is, he's brand spanking new, subordinate to the characters he once had command over (and ceded power to), and he's the first one to go. he dies a sergeant who never saw Price go on the inevitable downward spiral he headed toward, while the original Soap was with him (almost) all the way.

idk it's not a bad thing that they did this, it's interesting to play with different dynamics (and honestly it feels like Gaz is both reprising his old role from the original trilogy and occupying the role og!Soap once did which is cool 2 me ^-^), but it leads Johnny feeling like um. not Soap. to me. that's not Soap that's his baby brother Johnny and Makarov aborted him before he ever got to grow up.

okay hi I'm on my laptop now. so Soap's journal. revisiting it for Call of Honor reasons. tagging this as musing but really I'm just rambling

I'm kind of annoyed now that Infinity Ward declared the Operation Kingfish short canon because it kind of scrambles two important factors to Soap's arc:

Price is not present when Task Force 141 is created, and he is presumed dead up until they catch wind of Prisoner 627

Soap already knows who Makarov is when he and Shepherd create the 141

and tbh I can't read this as anything else other than TF141 being Soap's idea to begin with?

either he sought Shepherd out personally, or he was seeking out Someone who could help him make this happen and Shepherd had his ear on the wall.

(I do like that the short connects Soap's motivation for hunting Makarov to losing Price. I've got kind of a hacky way of making it still work but put a pin in that.*)

Task Force 141 is the tool Shepherd uses to spark the war that makes him a hero. Soap doesn't know this was purposeful, but he does know Joseph Allen is dead and now there's a dead CIA agent at the site of. hold on googles something. okay jesus no at the time, No Russian would've been the largest mass shooting in the Russian Federation. Jesus Christ. okay. and that blood is on the hands of Task Force 141. because They sent him in there, he was affiliated with Them. and Soap's kind of responsible for that because, he may not have picked Joseph Allen, but he built the fucking task force. it was His idea.

so Soap hunts down any lead they can find to bring them to Makarov. he finds about prisoner 627 and decides to bait Makarov out with him. but it's Price! his dead fucking mentor, alive and holding Roach's gun.

and Soap bends to him SO FUCKING EASILY. the moment Price is back into play, he's like. actually honored to be demoted like he's kind of obsessed with this man beyond parody

and then the first thing Price does with this regained authority is go rogue and launch a fucking SLBM at Washington, DC to stop the war. (Soap has some stupid ass justification for this but let's put a pin in that too**).

I think Shepherd was planning on burning TF141 from the start, but Price's actions made it even more necessary for him to do so. so he does so! and all the men that Soap hand picked (including Roach, who he picked because he reminded Soap of himself when he first joined the SAS and met Price) are suddenly dead, and he and Price have been disavowed and now they're wanted for shit like treason and global terror and "violent acts against the government" which. yeah. yeah! they did kind of do that.

and now Soap is on a suicide mission to kill Shepherd. and they do it, and it almost costs him his life, and maybe it wasn't really worth it because Shepherd's a martyr now but hey, they can still go after Makarov. they'll need to do mercenary work to do that. and Soap is recovering from being fucking stabbed. while they're on the run. but at least he's still got Price! ^-^

and then Price gets him fucking killed in Prague, because he's so focused on killing Makarov he barrels straight over Soap's concerns (AND SOAP YIELDS!!!) and jumps straight into an obvious fucking trap.

* okay my tentative idea for having the Operation Kingfish short still sort of kind of happen is that Soap and Price reunite shortly after what happens on the bridge. probably while they're still recovering. and they're still in the same team when they go back to work, and at some point they're sent after some guy they only know as Kingfish.

events of Operation Kingfish happen (only maybe more catastrophic, like more people died and Soap was one of the few survivors), and losing Price for a SECOND TIME (this time FOR REAL!) (😏) kind of makes him go bonkers. he has a burning grudge for whoever this Kingfish guy is, who he learns is Makarov. most likely before he meets Shepherd, but I could see it being around maybe the same time? like Shepherd reveals to Soap who Kingfish is and he's like AHA! IT'S THAT MOTHERFUCKER I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT. or someshit. then they make TF141 and MW2 and 3 happen.

idk it needs work before I can comfortably fit it in my own timeline, but for the purposes of planning Call of Honor and establishing the fucked up relationship Soap has to recover from, I think it's fine for now

tbc I think this is kind of stupid as fuck . idc this whole section of the journal feels so weak to me but I think I can work it. because I don't think Soap is unaware of the QUITE LITERAL sociopolitical nuke Price just dropped on everyone. and given how much he seems to give a shit about that when it was Zakhaev pushing the button, I think Soap is using a flimsy justification to try to assuage his guilt. they killed a lot of people, but hey, at least it gave the Americans a fighting chance.
