I'm not participating in Mermay exactly, but someone reminded me it was a thing, and I realized I actually have a siren/mermaid drawing from earlier this week, so I guess it would be fitting to post it now.
I know there are still sketch lines in there, but it was never meant to be a finished piece, more a quick study in atmosphere and image storytelling.
#mermay#mermay 2025#my trash#and long would mandos hold him#/end classification tags#no i don't have anything else to post#it's just this#no new queue or anything#anyway the reason i drew this is i heard a recording of a friend playing jolly sailor bold on the lyre#and i was like ''okay i have an idea'' and i threw this together#and in my hubris i looked up one single shipwreck image and decided that was enough reference for the whole drawing#(it was not enough but i refused to admit that at the time)#the drawing would have turned out much better if i had not been so stubborn but Here We Are#anyway a fun fact about me is that i love shipwrecks and pirates and sailing ships and all that stuff#(which you could probably have guessed from my pirate au for the tolkien stories but whatever)#i fear that if i had been a teenager in the 1600's i would most definitely have run away to sea#and probably died of scurvy or something but i like to imagine i would have had a good time until that happened

Well, that's the end of the queue. Thanks for joining me as I completely derailed the blog theme for a couple of weeks.
Once again, apologies for the low percentage of Tolkien content. As I said before, I still love the Middle Earth legendarium, I just haven't drawn much from it lately. (I also somehow missed the notifications for Fëanorian Week so...that didn't happen either. It's not the first time I've missed it, but still I was over here going "oh whoops".)
Transcription:
[Beleg:] "Did you notice how none of us was in even a single post?" [Túrin:] "I did notice that." [Third Age Finrod:] "I wonder what we did wrong..."
#beleg#finrod#túrin#tarva#the man the myth the legends#three shinies#my trash#is this actually funny or am i just tired#i'm sorry professor tolkien#/end classification tags#i have a couple of other drawings that i've done recently that i'm quite pleased with but they're from my own story#and they either give away plot points or require a lot of context explanation so whatever#maybe someday i'll post them but i kinda doubt it

An old drawing of the Amrod and Amras. I stopped working on it because I didn't like how the horses were looking but I think it still is an interesting concept and maybe someday I'll revisit it.
#amras#amrod#the man the myth the legends#three shinies#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#man those horses look so bad though#amras' horse especially looks insanely awkward and off balance#and amras' face too like what is that#it would be better if i cleaned it up but i just didn't really want to put in the effort for something that might turn out weird anyway#i wish i had at least brightened the sparks and added color variation to make them look more dynamic#but if it remember correctly this drawing was one of the ones that i was trying to limit the number of layers#so the sparks are on the same color layer as everything else

Just a little concept doodle from the second book in my WIP trilogy.

More Dungeons and Dragons sketches.
It's probably a good thing for the sake of our characters' lives that we had to cancel the campaign because none of these guys were quitters. All three of us players chose intelligence or wisdom as our dump stat on the character sheets.

Some more creature doodles.
These ones are actually some rough concept art for the backstory world of my current WIP, so they're useful doodles.
#i write sometimes#death by procrastination#my trash#/end classification tags#hooray more creatures#that first one doesn't even have a name yet#i'm just calling it ''ugly dragon''#i don't think i need to explain myself on that one#the second one is one of the first creatures i came up with for the story and it's hard not to overuse it as a result of that#but somehow i've never quite come up with a look that i'm 100% content with#it's a tad too sabertooth tiger at the moment#i'd kind of like to make the rib cage narrower but it's passable as is#the last one is just a pterosaur ripoff#i have no excuses for that one

Once upon a time, ten years or so ago, I wrote a ridiculous children's book about a squirrel knight. To this day it's still the only book I've ever completed a full draft for, and I've considered editing it and seeing if I can't get it published someday, but I would like to have illustrations for it first. One of the problems I've encountered with that, though, is putting plate armor on squirrels. So if I have to suffer through drawing it then you guys have to suffer through seeing it.
#i write sometimes#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#working with digitigrade legs but also trying to keep the vibe of historic plate mail is a nightmare you guys#send HELP#anyway#i once told someone that i had written a book about squirrel knights#and they were like#''aww cute i can just picture them running around in armor collecting nuts''#bro no#they're fighting in tournaments and wars and rescuing political prisoners and journeying to mythical islands#what kind of arthurian legends did you grow up with#anyhow the idea from the book came from a dream i had once about this squirrel knight#and at the end of the dream somebody handed me a book about his adventures and i was really eager to read it#and i was aware i was in a dream but at the same time my dream logic was like#''if i hold onto the book tightly enough then i can bring it into the waking world''#which of course didn't work#but that whole situation bothered me for years#so i finally decided to write the book myself#it's not exactly the same but the idea lives and that's what matters

In my work with worldbuilding for my main WIP, I had the opportunity to draw two of my protagonists all fancy for a ceremony.
#aoratay#wolfram#i write sometimes#death by procrastination#/end classification tags#i tried to add color to this but didn't end up liking it so i kept it with the greyscale#this was also the first time I drew the twins after slightly redesigning all the protagonists#so i wasn't quite comfortable with everyone's new looks yet#and i was also out of practice with art in general because i'd just come out of taking a break from drawing#anyway yeah so context wise soldiers would never wear this much jewelry in their everyday life#but when there are holidays or celebrations and you're not technically on duty#you're kind of expected to get all sparkly and fancy#the twins here are actually kind of plain compared to a lot of the more important people in the city#lowkey the main characters of the story were canon fodder in their own world#but they're still supposed to be fancy on important holidays

A couple of unfinished LOTR drawings: Gandalf and the Balrog, and Gollum.
Usually I wouldn't post stuff that never got past the doodly part of the art process (aside from some of my comics), but then I remembered I enjoy seeing other people's art process, so this is for anyone else out there that likes that.
#gandalf#gollum#the man the myth the legends#one shiny#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#you can see i started to take both of these to the next step and then went ''actually nah''#you can also see my (very inadvisable) process of skipping from the skeleton straight to sketching rather than doing a step for forms#the day when i get over that is likely the day that i actually improve and stop swirling around this whirlpool of ''i'll learn it later''

A couple of sketches related to those semi-fantasy characters I posted yesterday. Both of these were supposed to be given final lineart and possibly even colors (or at least some minimal shading) but then I got lazy and didn't finish them. The sketches are still a thing though.
#the world isn't in your books and maps#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#there was a sort of story that went along with the characters but it was one of those things you just don't bother writing down#the knight getting stabbed in the back in the first drawing isn't from the lineup by the way#i didn't include the villains in there#and that's one of the villains#side note but i really want the boots from the second drawing#they look so comfortable and practical#which is a big deal for me to say#i am generally an advocate against foot prison and yet i would gladly wear those boots

A cast of characters I put together for fun over the course of like a week. The setting is supposed to be some kind of generic medieval fantasy. I tried to be as historical as I could with the clothes and armor, but didn't hold myself to a strict time period or location and instead went with a vague "European middle ages".
While I personally am fond of the whole grimdark fantasy thing, I love how colorful the real middle ages could be and I wanted to be sure I was sticking to that as closely as I could manage.
#the world isn't in your books and maps#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#i would have added more characters to the lineup but i ran out of layers on my drawing app#the top two pictures are obviously royalty and knights (and one squire)#the third is a hermit magician and an astronomer and an alchemist#the fourth is a jewelsmith and an earl's son and a jester (obviously) and a bard#i had to do so much googling for the outfits oh my word it took DAYS#like 15 years ago i was introduced to arthurian legend and for this longish stretch of time all i drew was knights#and then i kind of set it aside for a while and drew knights a normal amount#and then last year i came up with these characters and was like oh shoot i don't know how to draw armor anymore#but that meant i got to do even more RESEARCH hooRAY#(i'm not being sarcastic about that by the way)#(i do actually enjoy research)#(especially if it's stuff like armor)#also side note but i ended up having a ton of color descriptions in the image alt text which i know is kind of silly#but really the characters are just standing there doing basically nothing so there's not much else to say about them

About a year ago I played Dungeons and Dragons for the first time (which may come as a surprise; but the issue was that for a long time I didn't have enough friends). Although unfortunately we were never able to finish the campaign, I did a few drawings of various scenes. There were only three party members (a half-elf fighter, a dwarf barbarian, and a tabaxi monk) and none of them were very good at anything, but it was a good time.
#blargh#davneiros#onoemican#two himbos in a trenchcoat#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#i was playing the tabaxi#nobody else in the group could pronounce his name (onoemican)#so we just ended up calling him ono which turned out to be quite accurate#any time he did anything it was like ''oh no''#in spite of this he ended up being the diplomat of the group#mainly just because he was paranoid#not because he was competent#(because he wasn't competent)#(at all)

So you guys know I'm prone to art block. Sometimes getting out of that requires changing art mediums (usually from digital to pencil and paper, or vice versa) and with that comes a refresher course on poses and perspective and all that stuff.

It was clumsy trying to use paper after only doing digital art for months, but it did break me out of art block so I can't complain. And it forced me to go back to more of those rough implied forms rather then precise outlining, which is useful for quick sketching.
I was having trouble finding pose references that felt dynamic enough for what I was trying to do. Which hopefully means that I'm improving on my basic art skills, but it could also just be me being overdramatic. It's probably that second option, actually. When I'm writing, I'll say "[character] sat down" and what I picture in my head looks like this:

And then what I draw looks like this:

And while that's entertaining, it makes it hard to actually illustrate anything I'm writing. I don't hate the comic book vibe it brings, but it's not always what I'm going for.
#the world isn't in your books and maps#my trash#don't mind me#clad only in their hair#/end classification tags#i am ashamed to say that i tried to tap to undo more than once in just that single page of figure studies#this exercise was definitely a ''go touch grass'' moment for me

You want yet another Glaurung who doesn't look anything like any of my other Glaurungs? No? Well, too bad.
Glaurung in front of Nargothrond. It wasn't supposed to be Glaurung at first but then I added the bridge and stuff, and therefore it's Glaurung.
#glaurung#the man the myth the legends#three shinies#everyone deserved better except mîm#my trash#past tarva speaks#/end classification tags#a single glaurung does not warrant its own post but i didn't have anything that really fit into the same vibe for the post#so he's all alone#like he deserves#no friends for glaurung

You guys haven't yet met the last two protagonists in my main WIP trilogy. The ironic part is these were the first two characters I came up with for the story...
There, now I have the whole collection on the blog.
I'm still doing character design stuff so I don't know if these are exactly the final looks for either of them, but they're close enough to what I'm going for right now that I don't mind posting them.
#halogen#metalloid#i write sometimes#death by procrastination#my trash#/end classification tags#that second one was my second attempt at using markers for art in probably over a decade#i was STRUGGLING#you guys have probably figured out by now that i generally stick to black and white when i'm working with traditional mediums#it's probably because of a mix of not being able to cover up mistakes and not wanting to have to carry around so many art supplies#in any case i just never learned how to use them#so that's why metalloid's picture looks odd#his hair is not supposed to be that dark on the lower layers#i just picked the wrong color of marker and had to commit#again apologies for all the non-fandom art#i have been working on this story in particular a lot lately and it kind of has priority over everything else when it comes to my free time

I was joking around with my friend about young adult novel tropes and accidentally came up with the outline for a book series that's spoofing pretty much every YA story I've ever read. And then I was like "Huh, I never have tried to do a YA book cover art style" so I gave it a go and I've been laughing about this ever since.
I wish I had a title for this book so I could go all out with the drawing by putting all the decorations and words on it, but we're just going to have to leave it as it is.
The premise is the whole magic-school chosen-ones fetch-quest thing. I wrote two whole scenes of narration/dialogue, which was more than I meant to do. Whether or not I ever write anything for it again, I'm sure the concept is forever going to be like a landmine in my mind for me to step on when I least expect it.
#i write sometimes#my trash#/end classification tags#of course most of the characters have those over the top names that are so common to the genre#and then there's ben#his parents didn't realize he was going to be in a young adult novel when they named him
